My walk with Rahul was to keep alive the tradition of Nehru-Gandhi family marching together for India: Tushar

0

Mumbai/Kolkata: The great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Tushar Arun Gandhi on November 18 walked along with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY), a walk organized by Indian National Congress to unite India. The yatra began on September 7 and the yatris (participants) will walk around 3500 kilometres from Kanyakumari to Kashmirand will be concluding in January. Tushar Gandhi, the author of The Lost Diary of Kastur, My Ba and Let’s Kill Gandhi joined the BJY in Maharashtra. Congress termed it ‘historic.’ Sister of Tushar, Archana Prasad, who lives in New York shared the picture of Rahul Gandhi and Tushar Gandhi walking together on social media.

On Saturday late night, when Tushar returned to Mumbai, eNewsroom India rang him up to talk about the importance of the yatra, his participation and more. Following are the excerpts.

eNewsroom: Why do you feel a yatra like Bharat Jodo is the need of the hour for India?

Tushar: At the moment the society is being subjugated by hate. Hatred has become a tool to grab power. It is being effectively used during election campaigns, creating rifts in society and on social media. You see unrestricted hate everywhere hatred is dominant, which is very dangerous.

It is because of this so many gruesome incidents took place in India.

Recently, a 9-year-old boy in Rajasthan was killed for drinking water from a pitcher meant for the upper caste people in the school.

And the way in which the rapists and murderers in the Bilkis Bano case were released, and treated like heroes by the society shows how hatred is dehumanizing us. This is a very dangerous thing for society to survive.

Hate cannot be countered by hate, or defeated by hate. It has to be countered by love and transformation. Hate has to be transformed into love.

So, a proactive effort like this is praise-worthy.

eNewsroom: Why did you think of walking along with Rahul Gandhi?

Tushar: I was very concerned about this dominance and normalization of hate in our society. I have been thinking about what needs to be done to counter this. When Bharat Jodo Yatra was about to start, I considered it a positive thing. So I decided to participate in the yatra. I would have joined for a longer time unfortunately I could only give a day to it. Still, it is important.

Personally it is also about keeping alive the tradition of the two families—Nehru family and the Gandhi family. The ancestors of the two generations have associated with each other at the time of India’s need.

Right from Motilal (Nehru) Ji, when Bapu did the Dandi Cooch, Pandit Nehru was the one who used to guide AICC and Bapu, whenever he was on yatra.

During Dandi March, when it reached Jambusar, both Motilal and Jawaharlal Nehru joined the yatris. They jointly held the Jan Sabha in Jambusar, where both spoke along with Bapu.

Then in 1947, at Noakhali, when it was Bapu, once again fighting politics of hate, Nehru visited him and briefed Bapu on what was happening in Delhi, he also briefed him about the violence in Bihar, and carried his (Bapu’s) messages.

In 2005, when I celebrated the 75th anniversary of Dandi March and re-enacted it, Rahul Gandhi came to walk with me for a day. Later on the final day, Sonia Gandhi Ji too joined the Yatra, so I felt that the tradition should be continued.

The tradition is important and people should be reminded of it.

eNewsroom: People would like to know what you and Rahul Gandhi talked about during the walk.

Tushar: We talked about our shared family history. Rahul had questions about the history of Bapu’s younger days like – why he went to England to study and why he went to South Africa to work. We talked about the politics of hate, about Bapu’s travels to discover India. I told him about my birth on a train while it had stopped at Shegaon. He asked me if due to my birth on a train I had become a compulsive traveller. I told him I wasn’t a compulsive traveller but I have an affinity for travelling. We also talked about how hate is propagated and how atrocities elicit more intense hatred.

eNewsroom: A lot is being said about Rahul Gandhi’s compassionate behaviour during the yatra, do you also have to share something?

Tushar: During the yatra there was one group of women and girls trying to catch Rahul’s eye. They looked very forlorn and sad. Finally their leader got through to Rahul. He leads a movement for Manual Scavengers and their families in Maharashtra. The group of women and girls were widows and daughters of manual scavengers who had died while cleaning choked sewers. Rahul immediately told the security to allow the group to come through the cordon and meet him. The women broke down on meeting him. He embraced each one of them, wiped their tears and compassionately listened to their woes. He had no solution to offer to them to lessen their plight but they were overwhelmed by his compassion and for a few moments it lessened their grief. I got to witness this from very close. Rahul was moved by their plight and offered genuine solace to the aggrieved women and girls and made them smile. That is a part of his personality that is winning the hearts of people.

eNewsroom: Do you feel, leaders of all the opposition parties, should also walk in Bharat Jodo Yatra?

Tushar: As far as political parties are concerned, I believe every Indian who wants love and inclusiveness should be participating in the yatra, beyond political identity. Although it is a predominately Congress-organized event, it is not exclusively a Congress event. So every Indian has been welcomed with open arms and that is how it should be. If political pettiness comes in the way, it will be a self-defeating attitude.

eNewsroom: In recent times, India’s image has been ruined globally, will this yatra help improve it?

Tushar: I do not care what the world would think about us. I really don’t care about what is happening to us that is more important. We need to cure this growing malice, hatred.

eNewsroom: Is the media doing justice to this movement which aims to unite the country?

Tushar: It is very reprehensible that the media and especially the electronic media is apathetic towards the yatra, which is turning into a national event. It shows how the media has become devoid of ethics.

eNewsroom: The Yatra has covered half of its journey, do you believe it is achieving its mission?

Tushar: More needs to be done.., much more needs to be done. But it is a beginning, a correct beginning. The yatra is giving hope.., the hope that there is a possibility of eradicating hate. That is the greatest achievement of the yatra.

Young But Obese India

Living in a tech-savvy ready-made society, people are seeking instant solutions for every aspect of their lives. Especially for eating nowadays, they are preferring home delivery of food and drink from hotels, restaurants, cafeterias and food shops among others. They are used to have spicy, oily, palatable dishes, junk foods, and various kinds of high calorific drinks. People are becoming inactive in cooking food at home for themselves but are becoming addicted to buttered snacks and pastries. Thus, they usually take several times more calories than our normal necessity. As a result of this people are being obese at an alarming rate.

Recent studies by the National Family Health Survey-5, published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, have shown that one in every four Indians is now obese. It is not only in India but also a global problem. According to the report by the World Health Organization, 13+ percent of the world’s adult population is obese among which 11+ percent are men and 15+ percent are women. Also, WHO says that the prevalence of obesity worldwide nearly tripled between the years 1975 and 2016. Now it is 2022, and the situation is getting worse gradually.

Obesity implies being overweight in the human body and is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may scare our good health. The word “Obesity” comes from the Latin ‘Obesitas’ which means ‘stout, fat, or plump’. In the phonetics of ‘Obesitas,’ ‘esus’ is the past participle form of the verb ‘edere’ which means ‘to eat’, with ‘ob’ which implies ‘over’, added to it. In Ayurveda Obesity is known by the terminology ‘STHOULYA’. The word ‘Obesity’ was first used in 1611 by American lexicographer Randle Cotgrave in the Oxford English Dictionary to indicate overweight. Today this ‘Obesity’ seems to be a global hazard to humanity.

As per WHO’s norm, obesity is measured by the calculation of one’s Body Mass Index or BMI. BMI is a very simple index of weight-for-height of a body. It is calculated as a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of that person’s height in meters. WHO defines anybody having BMI less than 18.5 as underweight and someone having BMI between 18.5-24.9 as normal weight. A range of BMI between 25.0-29.9 implies overweight and someone having BMI greater than 30.0 is called obese. There are three types of obesity to BMI. BMI between 30.0-34.9 belongs to class 1 obesity, BMI between 35.0-39.9 belongs to class 2 obesity and BMI greater than or equal to 40.0 belongs to class 3 obesity which is very dangerous.

Fundamentally obesity occurs because of consuming a rich diet daily. Such kinds of food habits create an imbalance between calories consumed and calories expanded. People are being fanciful to have energy-dense foods high in fat and sugar every time. They like to taste those foods to which free sugar has been added. Free sugar is added to junk foods, some cereals, and flavored yogurts. These are charming to taste but should be avoided. This sugar is naturally found in honey, syrups, and fruit juices and it causes havoc and damage to our health. So we need to eat less of these foods. Another big reason to make people obese is leading a sedentary lifestyle with lots of physical inactivities. People are being more machine oriented to do normal stuff. As a result of this, they’re becoming too lazy to work hard. They desire to have some sweets rather than release some sweat from their body. Increasing urbanization, changing nature of work due to the abundance of technology, and changing modes of transportation also cause excessive assemblage of fat over the human body.

Also, there are some physiological reasons to create obesity. Genetic Susceptibility, Chronic medication, Mental disorders, Endocrine disorders, and even some unwanted disruptions of chemicals cause obesity in the human body.

Due to this extra baggage of amassed fat over the human body, people are facing several major ailments. Nowadays it has become the main cause of non-communicable diseases or NCDs. The systematic effects of obesity are cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke among others, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, musculoskeletal problems like osteoarthritis: a highly disabling degenerative disease of joints like sarcopenia, sleep apnea, depression, social stigmatization and some cancers including endometrial, breast, ovarian, prostate, liver, gallbladder, kidney, and colon cancer. Also, it causes colorectal cancer. In the case of Class 3 obesity, it may result in a reduction of the span of life, loss of dynamicity, weakness, foul smell in the body and loss of libido among others. Every year due to its adverse effect knee replacement cases increase day by day. Due to this morbid obesity, almost 2.8 million people die worldwide every year.

But for childhood cases, obesity makes their future at various risks like disability in adulthood, breathing difficulties, psychological disorders, stigmatization, and even premature death. On this note, recent findings in the National Family Health Survey-5 indicate an increase in childhood obesity in India. According to the report of the World Obesity Federation, India is expected to have over 27 million obese children by 2030. It also says that one in ten obese children globally to be from India by 2030. By the near future in India, obese children among the age group of 5-9 years will be 10.82 percent, and obese teenagers among the age group of 10-19 years will be 6.23 percent of the total population of children and teenagers respectively. This is highly alarming! It seems India is not likely to meet WHO’s commitment to half the rise in childhood obesity by 2025. While discussing this matter of obesity among children, Dr Sourav Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Department of Allied Health Science, Brainware University concerned that nowadays children don’t play on the ground, rather they’re addicted to digital screens. They are living languid lives and have a fatty diet now and then. As a result of this, the future of those children goes in danger. He urges, “It is high time for the parents to make their children physically active to prevent the disease shortly”.

WHO predicts nearly 167 million people globally to be obese by 2025. And in India as per the National Family Health Survey-5, obesity among women has increased from 21 percent in 2015-16 to 24 percent in 2019-20, and among men, it has increased to 23 percent in 2019-20 from 19 percent in 2015-16. This report signifies the cruciality of obesity in India. It says the Rise of Obesity among children (age group 5-9 years), teenagers(age group 10-19 years), youth(age group 20-35 years), and middle-aged people(age group 45+ years) is scary. A recent large-scale survey in 2021 shows that the youth of India is at risk of obesity. During the pandemic, there are numbers of seasonal, structural, frictional, trade cycles, temporary and disguised unemployment in India, and a study shows they’re getting obese. Thus, Young India’s potential is being criticized negatively due to the deadly obesity!

Recently the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the “Youth in India 2022” report. This report is formed by the Technical Group on Population Projections constituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This report says children of the age group of 0-14 years comprise 25.7 percent, youths of the age group of 15-29 years comprise 27.2 percent, and middle-aged (30-59 years) people comprise 32.8 percent of the total population of India in 2021. This simply tells us that India has more than 52 percent of its total population below the age group of 30 and these youths are havocly suffering from obesity which makes their lives in great distress. Due to obesity, they’re suffering from problems of being lethargic, depressed, having hormonal disorders, menstrual problems, loss of libido, and becoming infertile at an early age. This “Youth in India 2022” report also refers to a major percentage decline in the number of youths. It predicts by 2036, the number of youth will decline to nearly 42 percent from 52 percent in 2021. And the major reason for this decline in the youth population is infertility and obesity is causing infertility among the youth at an alarming rate. So obesity can be a strong reason to weaken the potential of Young India. That’s why it’s urgent to fight back against this menace.

Author Neil D’Silva, before and after shedding 21 kilograms weight

A finding published in BMJ Global Health claims that obesity and other ailments related to weight are costing India around one percent of its gross domestic product annually. To solve this problem of obesity, the “WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health” proposes actions needed to support healthy diets and regular physical activity. As obesity in brief is an imbalance between weight gain and weight loss, Dr Tuhin Kanti Biswas, Professor, and Head of the Department of Kayachikitsa, JB Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, thinks that diet is the most important cause of obesity and prevention of obesity can best be done by reduction of caloric values in daily diet. Just we need a supportive environment and healthy diets to reduce extra fat. Dr Biswas also believes in the management of obesity rather than taking unsolicited medication. He suggests, “The Principle of management of obesity according to Ayurveda is the intake of diet which are heavy in quality and non-nutritious in nature (in Sanskrit: Guru ch atarpanam chestang sthulanam karshang prati)”.

Besides this, to reduce the burden of obesity we’ve to exercise daily. Walking, Working and Running is the best way to burn calories. After consumption of each meal, we’ve to walk for at least fifteen minutes. The best-seller horror author Neil D’Silva was suffering from obesity and he was scared of it. He was 86 kg and started walking first, and then running every day to get rid of it. It is today after a year and a half he makes himself so fit and transforms himself into a 29-inch waist from deadly 36 inches. He is now only 65 kg and passionate about running a half marathon every weekend. He energetically says, “Now, running has become a habit, a passion. I no longer run to stay fit; now I stay fit so that I can run. I hope to run a full marathon one day!”. And also I’ve started running to get rid of my extra baggage of fat, already. What are you waiting for? Run every day and stay safe.

Jab Hamare Purvaj Angrejo se nahi darey, to hum tumse kiya darenge: Hemant Soren

0

Ranchi: A day after appearing before the Enforcement Directorate officials in Ranchi, chief minister Hemant Soren seemed unfazed. He addressed partymen and not only called for the unity of tribal (Adivasis) and indigenous (Moolvasis) people of Jharkhand but also warned the ‘conspirators’ that when their forefathers were not afraid of the Britishers during British Raj then how could they get afraid of from them.

Hemant Soren flanked by the JMM and alliance partner Congress legislators, parliamentarians as well as leaders delivered a fiery speech before the party workers who had gathered from across the state in the state capital.

He did not name the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in his speech but made sharp attacks by calling it ‘they.’

“They also put respected Shibu Soren inside jails for years, showing the bones of the animals. But what happened? They couldn’t malign his name. Instead under his leadership, we get a separate state,” Jharkhand chief minister began his speech with the history of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founder Shibu Soren better known as Guruji.

“Now, being the locals, you have to take the responsibilities as well. Else, people from other states like Gujarat, Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra will come and rule here. In the coming times, only Adivasi-Moolvasis will be sent to the Vidhan Sabha, Lok Sabha,” said Soren before the JMM cadres.

He also claimed that in future, Adivasi and Moolvasi will be placed ahead in every sector.

“We will not let our forefather’s hardship go in vain. We have seen in the last twenty years how they have treated us like idiots. Now the time has arrived to give them same treatment.”

Soren stressed upon the unity of Jharkhandis, “Only our unity can save this state, the rights of locals. Every Adivasi-Moolvasi has to come under one roof then only will your rights be saved.”

He also mentioned about people in far-flung areas, now being benefitted from the government schemes. And told that government officials too were harassed during earlier regimes, they were dejected but now they are working diligently.

Soren said, “But they thought that the Adivasis and Moolvasis are fools, by using police and agencies they will get feared and become silent. But they are forgetting one thing, when our forefathers weren’t afraid of Britishers, how we will get afraid of them.”

The chief minister recalled Jharkhand’s history during British rule. “Not a single person, but hundreds of our ancestors sacrificed their lives. People give an example of one Jaliawala Bagh, but several Jaliawala Baghs had taken place here.”

Before ending his speech, Soren addressed the workers like a leader of an army, “Aagey jo bhi tufan/ musibat ayega, pehle humse takrayega, fir iss rajya mei ghusega (In future, whatever trouble/storm will come, first it will have to face me before entering the state).”

On Thursday, before appearing at ED officials, he shared a letter with media persons, which he wrote to the ED and raised questions on the whopping figure in the alleged corruption against him by the agency, for which he was called before the agency.

In the letter, the chief minister not only claimed that he is with the agency in the fight against illegal mining and that in the last two fiscal years (since his government is in power), the royalty collection from mining in the state has increased, but also showed the calculations that the alleged loss of 1000 crores in state exchequer due to illegal stone mining in Sahebganj district is not possible.

He cited that a total of 9 crores metric tonnes of stone has been mined in the state, and Sahebganj has only a 20 percent share in it.

“In order to evade royalty of Rs 1000 crores in two years, over 8 crores metric tonnes (mt) of stone is required to be illegally mined in Sahebganj that is 4 times the legally mined quantity in the district,” the letter mentioned in one of its points.

And further writes, “In order to transport over 8 crores mt stone in two years, in excess of 20,000 rakes or 33,00,000 trucks would be required as the capacity of each rake is about 4000 mt and each truck is about 25 mt.”

“Railways does not permit loading of rake without submission of mining/mineral challan,” he said while raising another point.

“It appears that you have not identified loading of even a single rake without requisite challan as you have not taken action against any Railway officer,” he questioned.

ED questioned the Jharkhand CM for over 9 hours in its Ranchi office, on Thursday.

Tagore’s Romance With Science, On Celluloid

0

Kolkata: It is an evening at a posh South Kolkata coffee shop. The weather is pleasant with an inaugural winter touch. Sipping coffee, eminent director and Dean, Film Studies, SRFTI, Ashoke Viswanathan reveals, “I have completed a short film of 30 minutes. The Poet And His Universe. It is a documentary about Rabindranath Tagore’s romance with science”.

He carries on “The proposal for this novel project was from Vigyan Prasar, Government of India in association with the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. I have scripted and directed it. The cinematography is by Hitesh Liya, editing by Samik Dey and music jointly by SS Roy and Pijush Chakraborty.”

An atmosphere of interest prevails. A few inquisitive visitors look with interest. Greeting them with a warm smile and munching a biscuit, Viswanathan carries on, “When Tagore was in his 70s, he penned a Bengali book about science in 1937. Entitled Biswa Parichay, it was a collection of essays on biology, physics and astronomy. The main focus was Tagore’s understanding of science at an advanced level. I consulted and received a lot of material from reputed scientists like Dr Partha Ghosh (a student of legendary Satyen Bose) and Dr Bikash Sinha, the nuclear physicist who was instrumental in developing nuclear power for the famous Pokhran experiment.

Both the scientists have emphasized that Tagore possessed a profound knowledge of science without any formal education. The seeds of scientific thoughts were swooned in Tagore by his illustrious father, Maharshi Devendranath Tagore. Explains Viswanathan, “Tagore accompanied his father to Dalhousie in Northern India during his childhood. There under the clear sky, he explained to his son the basics of astronomy. Inspired, Rabindranath Tagore started reading books on physics and life science.”

The sensitive writer and director has tried his best not only to explain the basic elements of the book Biswa Parichay but also the reference to science in his immortal songs, Akash Bhora and Aaji Joto Tara

Dr Ghosh has put a thrust on Tagore’s interactions with Albert Einstein. They debated on the nature of human perception. An excited Viswanathan says, “There is an interesting scene in my short film. Heisenberg (inventor of the uncertainty principle) visited Jorasanko, Tagore’s residence on October 4, 1929. They discussed the uncertainty principle.”

Completing his coffee the filmmaker ends by saying, “I have shown in my short film that Tagore warned technology needed to be humanly controlled else human beings would become mechanized machines. A master aspect of this film is theatre within cinema. Late Soumitra Chatterjee’s daughter, Poulami performs solo, Red Oleana, Tagore’s, Raktakarabi in drama form in the film”.

JL Bhaduri’s two volumes of Rabindranath Tagore and Science have also focused deeply about the great literaturist’s fondness for science. Viswanathan in keeping close to his context has not delved into this aspect. However in his memorable short film, crisply edited, he has cinematically defined many aspects of how literature can also befriend science though they are different streams altogether.

The director added that the film will be released by the end of December this year.

Jharkhand police visit Amazon Bengaluru office in mosque-peeing case

Kolkata: During the investigation into the terrible case of urination inside a mosque in Giridih, Jharkhand, the police found that one of the accused has a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) degree and that he also happens to work with Amazon India.

On October 4, the Navami day of Durga Puja, Sunny Raj, 25, went inside Nayi Masjid, Khutta (Telodih) and urinated near the Mimber, from where the Imam gives his Friday sermon. His act was captured by CCTV cameras.

Later, locals caught Sunny and handed them over to the police. They found that there were three other people outside the mosque waiting for him. One was in a scooty and two in a car. Among the three, Rohit Raj, is Sunny’s sibling. The others are Deepalok Mitra, his cousin, while Chandan Gupta is a friend of Deepalok. Sunny and Rohit’s late father was a government school teacher.

Rohit has also done hotel management from Bengaluru and runs a restaurant in Giridih. Deepalok is a government contractor, while Chandan deals in real estate. The fifth accused, Babla Keshri, is absconding.

It has come to light that Sunny had attempted to enact the same act in another mosque, located in Pachamba. Both the mosques are situated at a distance of four kilometers. However, since he was wearing a Bermuda, people who were coming out from the mosque noticed it and sent him away. This attempt too was recorded on the mosque’s CCTV.

Since it was festival time, sensing major trouble, the police acted swiftly. A case (number 130/2022) under Sections—109, 153, 153 (A) (2), 245, 295 (A), 296, 12C (B) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the five accused.

A senior police officer claimed that they had sent a team to Amazon India’s Bengaluru office to inquire about Sunny. Amazon India officials accepted that Sunny is its employee but refused to share any further information citing privacy issues.

Sunny’s LinkedIn profile mentions that he is ‘Process Lead’ at Amazon India and has been associated with the multinational company for over five years and three months now. He got his MBA degree from Bengaluru. His schooling has been in a convent school in Giridih.

Bail rejected at CJM court

Sources said that it was a challenging case for the police since in 295 (A)-related cases lower courts reject bail applications of the accused in most cases. However, in this case, the chief judicial magistrate had sought the diary from the police. And after two hearings — on October 20 and November 3, bail got rejected.

“We can only say that the bails of the accused have been rejected,” Haris Bin Zaman, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Giridih, told eNewsroom.

Prakash Sahay, a well-known criminal lawyer representing the case from the Masjid Committee, told eNewsroom, “It is a very serious offence and could not be expected from an educated person or someone who belongs to such a family. We will ensure that their bail gets rejected from the session court too.”

Sources said, to document the act before the court, the police used colour pictures identifying the movement of the accused inside the mosque, using CCTV footage.

The police, during its investigations, found no sign of mental instability in Sunny, which the family had claimed after the incident. “So far, in our investigations, we did not find any truth in this claim by the family,” said a police officer. “In fact, it is an intentional and pre-planned act,” he said.

Interestingly, despite the uproar caused by this unsavoury act, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders came out in defence of the accused. They alleged that they were beaten up by the police in front of two Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislators, which JMM leaders denied.

RSS and BJP are dangerous, they want to control you through fear: Rahul Gandhi

1

Why are you walking?” I asked Rahul Gandhi at the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Rahul: Do you know the difference between Pooja and Tapasya?

Me: Yes, Pooja is worship and Tapasya is penance.

Rahul: Tapasya comes from the word ‘Tapp’, which means heat. When you do tapasya you generate heat. The heat that consumes you. It hurts you, it pains you and then you achieve

Me: But what do you hope to achieve?

Rahul: Your love, your blessings, our unity.

Me: There could have been other ways.

Rahul: Yes. Sure. But I do not want to achieve anything without putting in an effort, without doing tapp. Unless it hurts me, it pains me, any achievement is not worth it. This Bharat Jodo Yatra is my tapasya.

Me: And I am sure you will achieve it.

Rahul: One has to do tapasya without expectations and only then will it be successful. I don’t know whether I will achieve what I have set out to do. But I will keep burning myself till I do.

Me: How do we, ordinary common folk, deal with the hate narrative being spread?

Rahul: RSS and BJP are dangerous, they want to control you through fear and for fear they use religion. Tell me something, what are you?

Me: I am irreligious.

Rahul: But you must have been born into some religion right?

Me: Yes, I am a Hindu by birth.

Rahul: So, have you read the Vedas

Me: No. I haven’t.

Rahul: I have, and all of them. Do you think all those who claim they are Hindu or Sikh or Muslim have really gone through the pain of reading their scriptures themselves?

Me: I hardly think so.

Rahul: So when they suddenly start claiming how proud they are of being a Hindu, on what premise do they base this on?

Me: True.

Rahul: This creation of false pride in you leads to extremism and then the fear of the other religion gives RSS the control over you. Once people start figuring this out and start becoming humans first before anything else, then we will overcome the BJP line of thought.

Me: Insha Allah, we will.

Rahul: (putting his elbow on my shoulder and coming closer): Are you a Hindu or a Muslim? You just said Insha Allah. You told me you are a Hindu.

Me: I also said that I am irreligious and I don’t think religions make one human better or different than another. We are all the same.

Rahul: See, you are already there. That’s how it should be *Grins*

Me: ‘Grins back.’

Rahul: Are you an atheist?

Me: No. I am indifferent.

Rahul: You belong to a special school of thought. Do you believe in rebirth?

Me: Noooo..

Rahul: You know, I asked my Dadi (Indira Gandhi) once, “What do you care about being remembered as after you are gone” and Dadi said, “I don’t, I would be gone.” You are from her school of thought.. Religiously speaking.

Me: I am allowed to use this story right?

Rahul: That’s up to you. Just keep being human.

Rahul: Mahatma Gandhi travelled across India, do you know why he did it?

Me: To fight the British and free our country.

Rahul: No, because he wanted to understand India. India is complex, no two parts are the same. The problems of people across India are different. Their aspirations are different. I have to understand it.

Me: So, a Gandhi walks again in India?

Rahul: Not at all. Don’t even compare. I have no false notions about myself. I am doing this for myself.. This is my Tapasya. I have to understand the diversity of India.

Me: Understandable.

Rahul: When I understand the different aspects of India from the biggest town to the smallest village, then I will truly understand the pulse of India. This is my learning.

Me: And in the process get votes?

Rahul: That is not the reason I am walking, but if yes, then why not. The first thing I have to do is finish my Tapasya (walk) and I believe I can do it.

Me: I believe you can do it too, we all do.

Rahul: ‘smiles.’

Me: Thank you Rahul Sir, for the time you gave me and for having such an open conversation with me. You are very nice to talk to.

We shook hands and I slowly slid out of the security cordon discreetly

And then I made up a resolve that I will write about Rahul Gandhi. The misjudged and maligned person lets people have an insight into what he really is.

While Rahul wants to understand India, it is also important that India understands Rahul, beyond what the media and the propaganda against him want to portray him as.

And this is why Rahul Gandhi is walking in the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

And this is why we all should be walking with him. And hope he succeeds.

It is not easy to meet him but if you do, he is the easiest guy to talk to, ever!

He is not intimidating and he doesn’t try to overpower you in conversations, the discussion just flows smoothly.

He listens, he talks, and he lets you talk and respond to it with amazing clarity.

This man is no Pappu.. This man is a gem.

I hope my posts about my conversation with Rahul have helped in this a bit and will make a difference in understanding him.

This is the best I can do for someone who is relentlessly walking for 3,500 kms across India and I hope he succeeds in his tapasya.

Disclaimer: I seriously suggest that anyone of you who is interested in Uniting India, go and be a part of BJY, not for meeting RaGa or clicking pictures with anyone but for yourself.. That will be your Tapasya.

Clinical England Crush Clueless India – Read Key Reasons for Team India Exit at T20 World Cup

0

India crashed out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as England gave them a thrashing for the ages in the semi-finals at Adelaide on Thursday. The clinical manner in which England won not only made Team India seem clueless but could also go down in cricket history as one of the most one-sided defeats in a World Cup semi-final. It was a result that embarrassed experts, angered Indian fans and dashed all hopes of a dream final with Pakistan.

So, what exactly has gone wrong for the Men in Blue? Besides crucial mistakes on the day, there are long-term issues that have plagued Team India repeatedly in recent seasons. Overall, innovation is the key to success and it has been said that nothing changes, if nothing is changed! On Thursday afternoon in Adelaide, Indian World Cup dreams were crushed due to a lack of creativity and openness to new plans. While the cricketing world has made changes to their game and made it suitable for the T20 format, India has played majorly with the same line up over the past year. Their planning too left a lot to be desired as they played with nearly the same plans that pushed them out of the last World Cup.

Beyond the defeat, it’s the tame and timid approach on the day that is galling for Indian cricket lovers. The lack of intent and the nervy, almost terrified manner in which batters played in the powerplay after KL Rahul fell cheaply was quite shocking for a batting unit rated highly. The fearful batting underlined how India’s start has been shaky all through the World Cup. Though Rahul scored two half-centuries, he failed in 4 of the 6 matches.

Even Rohit Sharma seemed woefully out of touch. Though he is one of the greats among white-ball batsmen, Rohit hit just one 50-plus score in the World cup – and that too against the Netherlands. With both openers in poor form, India’s batting in the powerplays was among the worst in the tournament.

At the World cup, the batting line-up has been heavily dependent on Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli but to expect the duo to pull the side out of the fire all the time is simply asking for the moon. As luck would have it, Surya suffered his first failure against England in the Semi-finals. Though Hardik Pandya had been nowhere near his best with the bat through most of the World Cup, he played a remarkable hand in the Semis that enabled Team India to post a fighting total.

The lack of penetration in the bowling attack also came to bite India in the clash with England. Ever since Jasprit Bumrah got injured, the debate over who should be drafted in as his replacement was discussed for weeks. While no other pacer had the kind of pace or penetration that Bumrah possesses, Mohammed Shami was chosen as his replacement. Many believe that on bouncy Australian pitches, Umran Malik should have been a part of the squad. He’s the only Indian pacer who consistently clocks over 150 kph and keeping him and other young pacers like Prasiddha Krishna out has cost India heavily.

As England brutally exposed the limitations of India’s bowling, the reluctance to play wrist-spinners is bound to be questioned. In its 6 matches in the T20 World Cup, Team India never played Yuzvendra Chahal, the only wrist-spinner in the squad. Instead, the two-finger spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel were persisted through the tournament. Historically, wrist spinners have been better wicket-taking options in T20 cricket and most international teams now play wrist spinners as it is easier to attack finger spinners. How wrist spinners can be far more effective was displayed by England, who chose to play two wrist spinners Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone in the crunch semi-final.

Significantly, for a T20 World Cup, Team India also had an over-dependence on ageing stars. While skipper Rohit Sharma is 35, the other batting heavyweight, Virat Kohli is also over 34. In the bowling unit, R Ashwin is now 37 and the two pacers Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are both 32 and India’s ‘finisher’ for the tournament, Dinesh Karthik, is over 37 !! Except King Kohli, none of these aged stars could perform at the level expected from them – and a dose of youthful exuberance now seems much needed to boost Team India.

Finally, as so often in the past, India failed to hold their nerve in crunch moments. Despite winning a last-ball thriller against Pakistan in their opening game, India didn’t show enough composure under pressure and lacked the courage that so often enables teams to grab the silverware in ICC events. Though India have been one of the best white-ball sides over the past decade, they have often floundered in a crunch, knock-out games. Ultimately, it seems, the pressure of expectations became a tad excessive for the Indian team. The star-studded Indian side has been without an ICC trophy since 2013. In the semi-final, The additional pressure led to some muddled thinking and an alarmingly timid approach which proved fatal against England.
