Supporters of Lalu Yadav Angry at Modi govt’s ‘Persecution’ of Him and Family

0

Patna: It was Saturday evening. Rajshree – Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav’s wife, who is pregnant – was sweating feverishly and fell ill in the face of the Enforcement Directorate team questioning her for 15 hours. Tejashwi had her admitted at a Delhi hospital.

But in the fading light of the setting sun at Nakta diara – a cluster of villages on the northern outskirts of Patna across the Ganga – the residents seethed in anger at what they see as the “persecution” of Lalu Prasad and his family members. “Ati ho gael (Enough is enough),” said Mahtab Rai, a boatman, in Bhojpuri-Magahi. Anger was writ large on his face.

Nakta diara, nestled along the banks of the Ganga, is part of the Patliputra constituency, which BJP’s Ramkripal Yadav represents in the Lok Sabha. It’s home to nearly 9,000 voters – mostly Yadavs, though people from OBC and EBC communities also live here. Nakta diara has always been a Rastriya Janata Dal (RJD) bastion, but voters were earlier not hostile to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, many of them voted for him.

“We voted for Modi because we felt that he was good for the prime minister’s post. But we will never vote for him now. He has tortured our hero Lalu ji and his family members. What offence could his daughter-in-law have done; she was only recently married to Tejashwi. Why are Modi’s policemen raiding Laluji’s daughters and their innocent children?” asked Santosh Rai, another villager.

Nakta diara residents are largely boatmen and farmers. They ferry people and goods to and fro across the river from dawn to dusk. The farmlands in diara villages produce potato, sweet potato, cucumber and other vegetables in plenty, which the farmers carry in the boats to the wholesale markets at Digha and Antaghat on Patna’s southern bank.

While speaking, most of them had mobile phones in their hands. “Previously, we listened to Modi’s Mann ki Baat. No longer. He speaks lies. He can no longer buy our votes for five kg foodgrains. His only work is to torture Lalu ji and his family and protect his corrupt partymen,” Mahtab reacted. Most of the villagers appeared aware of the news about the CBI questioning and ED raids on Lalu’s family.

Reading this mood, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP and spokesman Manoj Jha said on Saturday about the investigating agencies’ conduct, “Our party’s support base is seething in anger. They are restive and want to hit the streets. But we have stopped them because we still believe that we have the rule of law in the country.”

Outrage across party lines

Nearly all the non-BJP parties have condemned the handling of the cases of alleged corruption involving Lalu and his family.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge slammed the Modi government for its “sinister design to kill democracy by misusing probe agencies against the opposition parties”. “His (Tejaswhi’s) pregnant wife and sisters are being harassed. Lalu Prasad ji is old, ill; even then the Modi government didn’t show humanity towards him,” he said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi took to Twitter, saying that the Modi government is “suppressing the unyielding voices of the opposition. Why is the government so scared of the vocal voices of the opposition?”

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal – who has seen two of his two former ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendra Jain arrested – described the BJP as the “most corrupt” party.

Bihar chief minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar referred the CBI and ED’s action against Lalu and his family as a result of his joining the Mahagathbandhan. “They (investigating agencies) raided Lalu ji’s establishments in 2017 when we were in Mahagathbandhan. They fell silent after I went to them (BJP). Now they are raiding (Lalu and family) again when we are together,” he said.

BJP’s leader of opposition in the Bihar assembly Vijay Kumar Sinha alleged that Lalu was “reaping what he had sown”. The ED claimed that its team had found property and unaccounted transactions worth Rs 600 crore from Lalu’s family members. Tejashwi denied the claim, saying that the agencies had made similar claims in 2017 but nothing had come of it.

Targeting opposition and protecting BJP leaders

“This is not the first time that a party in power is misusing the central agencies. What’s new and also unprecedented is targeting opposition leaders – specifically those posing a threat to the political strength of the present regime – in a well-orchestrated manner,” said a serving commissioner-rank Indian Revenue Service officer, requesting anonymity. He cited several high-profile leaders in the past who underwent investigation, prosecution, trial and even sentences even when their parties were in power.

Lalu is perhaps the biggest example of this. HD Deve  Gowda, the Janata Dal leader from Karnataka, was the prime minister in 1996. Lalu was president of the Janata Dal then and had played a pivotal role in making Deve Gowda the prime minister. But the CBI chargesheeted Lalu in the fodder scam cases during Deve Gowda’s tenure. Lalu also had to quit as the chief minister and go to jail when IK Gujaral – another Janata Dal leader – was the prime minister.

“It’s not that the then PMs and home ministers in office might not have favoured Lalu ji. They must have put their words of support, but they wouldn’t have crossed limits. And to be fair to Lalu ji, he too must have cooperated with the investigating agencies and the court procedures,” the officer said, alleging, “The present regime issues specific directives to the top brass of the investigating agencies about the persons to be investigated and those to be protected, they cross all limits.”

An additional director general (ADG) rank Indian Police Service officer at the Bihar police headquarters too was surprised at the manner in which the Union government had given third extension to ED director Sanjay Kumar Mishra. “Tell us, why should the government take so much interest in a particular individual for the top post? There are already officers in the queue of seniority to fill the vacancy. Why is an individual given extension after extension while deserving ones are languishing?” he asked. “The government has done this despite the amicus curiae in the Supreme Court, KV Viswanathan, objecting to it.”

There are many other examples of top leaders being subjected to investigation, prosecution and sentences when they had their governments at the Centre. Former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, former Maharashtra chief minister AR Antulay, three-time Bihar chief minister and Congress leader Jagannath Mishra and towering tribal leader from Jharkhand Shibu Soren were a few examples.

The hallmark of the present regime is targeting its opponents through the investigating agencies and forgetting the charges against them if they join the BJP.

BJP’s Blatant Double Standard For Lalu Prasad Yadav

0

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]uring the just-concluded Assembly poll campaign in Meghalaya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah described its Chief Minister, Konrad K Sangma, as “most corrupt” and heaped charges of money laundering on him. But Sangma’s National People’s Party won 26 of 57 seats it contested and formed the government. The Bharatiya Janata Party won two of the 60 seats it contested but made a frenetic U-turn once the results were out and extended support to Sangma. Modi and Shah graced Sangma’s swearing-in ceremony at Shillong on 7 March—the same day Central Bureau of Investigation sleuths questioned the Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad Yadav at his daughter Misa Bharti’s home in New Delhi. The corruption charges against Sangma would obviously not be discussed, forget about probe, now.

The Prime Minister did not mention Adani even after the entire Opposition demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the Hindenburg research report that claims to have exposed the group’s “misappropriations”, causing worldwide outrage. Repeatedly stalling Parliament on the issue didn’t move the Treasury Benches. Even an inspector-level official has not questioned Adani. The media house Al Jazeera has, in the meantime, claimed to have exposed how the Adani Group was allotted a coal block in violation of the Supreme Court’s order.

Sangma and Adani are just the tips of the iceberg of countless politicians and businessmen who enjoy impunity because they are in the “good books” of the ruling BJP. It is an open secret that many top leaders who faced the CBI’s heat, or that of the Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax authorities, suddenly got freedom after joining the BJP. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Narayan Rane, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and former Trinamool Congress leaders Suvendu Adhikari and Mukul Roy are well-known among those with central investigating agencies hot on their heels until they joined the BJP.

On the other hand, Lalu Prasad Yadav—perhaps the most uncompromising and belligerent opponent of the BJP—was released on bail after serving the bailable period of his jail term in the so-called fodder scam cases in March last year. He underwent a kidney transplant (donated by his daughter Rohini Acharya) in Singapore and returned to New Delhi on 11 February. Doctors have advised him against being in crowds for fear of infection. But a twelve-member CBI team questioned him for four hours in what they have termed as the “land-for-jobs” case.

Nature of the Cases

It was in 2017 that the CBI filed two cases against Lalu, his family members and others. At the time, his RJD was in a Mahagathbandhan or Grand Alliance with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal-United and the Congress party. The Alliance had roundly defeated the BJP in the 2015 Assembly poll and was in power in Bihar. The charges under these cases belonged to the period when Lalu was Union Railway Minister (2004-09). The allegations included: 1—Lalu took land in lieu of giving Group D jobs in the Railways, and 2—the Railways sold two IRCTC hotels in Ranchi (Jharkhand) and Bhubaneshwar (Odisha) to private operators in violation of stipulated provisions.

In fact, the CBI had received complaints about these cases from Lalu’s opponents during his tenure as Railway minister. The CBI investigated it first in 2008 and closed it, saying there was “no evidence”. Again, when Mamata Banerjee became Railway minister, the CBI probed these charges but closed the matter again in 2011 after finding “no evidence”. Now, how did the CBI, which had closed the cases twice, re-open them in 2017?

Lalu and his party alleged the CBI worked at the behest of the BJP, aiming to break the Mahagathbandhan. CBI and Income Tax officials raided Lalu’s home in Patna and many establishments concerning these two cases and filed a charge sheet against him, his wife Rabri Devi, son and present Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, daughter Misa Bharti, and others. After that, in 2017, Nitish Kumar dumped Mahagathbandhan and returned to the BJP fold.

Time rolled past. Days became months and months became years. The CBI did not pursue these cases so long as Nitish Kumar remained with the BJP. However, as soon as he dumped the BJP and returned to Mahagathbandhan, it swung into action. In August 2022, the agency raided over 17 establishments allegedly linked with Lalu and people close to him when the Nitish-led Mahagathbandhan was seeking a confidence vote in the Bihar Assembly.

After that, the CBI petitioned a court to cancel Tejaswhi Yadav’s bail in the IRCTC case, which it rejected. It also petitioned to extend Lalu’s sentence term in the fodder cases to return him to prison. On 15 March, following another petition, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi summoned Lalu, Rabri, Misa and others. But ahead of it, on 6 March, the CBI had interrogated Rabri in Patna for six hours and Lalu on 7 March in New Delhi.

Reasons for Heat on Lalu

Lalu is perhaps the only regional satrap who never compromised with the BJP and has stood like a rock behind the minorities, who are at the epicentre of Sangh Parivar-sponsored hate campaigns. Moreover, virtually every Opposition party—the Congress, left parties, regional parties in the South, and the Aam Aadmi Party, whose former ministers Satyendra Jain and Manish Sisodia are in jail on corruption charges—charges BJP with using central investigation agencies to break them and coerce their leaders to join it.

The BJP has evidently had some success in this ‘plan’, for many leaders in Maharashtra, West Bengal, North Eastern states, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Goa, who had the agencies chasing after them in various alleged “scams” got a reprieve once they entered the BJP fold.

As Tejashwi Yadav has said on Twitter—“अगर लालू जी BJP से हाथ मिला लेते तो वो आज हिंदुस्तान के राजा हरीशचंद्र होते। तथाकथित चारा घोटाला दो मिनट में भाईचारा घोटाला हो जाता अगर लालू जी का DNA बदल जाता।” That is, if Lalu had joined hands with the BJP, the fodder scam would have given way to bonhomie—but that isn’t possible for Lalu’s DNA cannot be changed.

The BJP broke the Mahagathbandhan in 2017 with CBI and IT raids on Lalu’s home, which triggered Nitish’s U-Turn. But now, the Bihar Chief Minister’s party claims to have understood the BJP’s “game”. Nitish has repeatedly said it is using raids to break the Grand Alliance, which he would not let happen again.

State’s Role In Rising Violence Against Muslims

0

Junaid and Nasir set out on 16th February 2023 to meet some relatives. They were subjected to brutal violence at the hands of ‘cow protection’ groups. These groups are operating in Haryana and nearby areas with great impunity. The tragic episode also reveals the degree of absolute impunity which these groups enjoy and part collusion with the police. On their return these two Muslim youth were stopped by the gang operating in the name of Cow protection, beaten and taken to police station. Police neither sent the injured men to hospital nor apprehend the criminals. The gang took Nasir and Junaid to a remote place, tied them to the back seats of the car and put the car on fire. The car which was used in this crime and other actions in the name of preventing Cow trafficking was earlier registered as the police vehicle!

Harsh Mander, the founder of Caravan-e-Mohabbat, trying to sooth the families of ‘victims of Hate crimes’, visited the area and wrote in Indian Express “I am profoundly chilled as I scan social media pages of Monu Manesar. He and members of his gang live stream as they openly brandish sophisticated firearms, sound sirens mimicking police jeeps, shoot at vehicles, and brutally thrash the men they catch.”

While protests are going on against this horrific crime, two Mahapanchayts have taken place. The victims were from Rajasthan and crime was committed in Haryana. The Mahapanchayats, duly supported by RSS affiliates Bajarang Dal, VHP and another organization called Hindu Sena further came out with Hate speeches. In the first one it was said that if Rajasthan police comes to arrest Monu Manesar, the chief of the vigilante group, they will not be able to go back on their feet. In the second one on 22nd February one Aastha Maa talked on the issue of love jihad and incited the audience not to spare those Muslims who are eyeing Hindu Girls.

Meanwhile three culprits have been arrested and it turns out that they were informers (Mukhbirs) of police. While the menace of Cow vigilantes has gone up in last few years, it particularly picked up after 2019. In 2015 the Harayana state passed a bill “Govansh Sanrakshan and Gosamvarshan” (Cow Progeny protection and promotion Act). In 2019 it brought an amendment that those trafficking cows will be punished. Since then many groups have sprung up who stop the vehicles carrying animals, make deals with them and in case of failures of the deals use violence. This treatment is meted out even to those transporters who have valid papers. Surely the police must be knowing this all. Muslims of Mevat region are the ones, who inherit a syncretic Islam with many Hindu rituals. Milk is one of their main business and they are victims of such regular attacks from the Monu Manesar type groups while the police is watching.

hate crime Nasir Junaid Killings Mewat violence against Muslims
Nasir and Junaid. The vehicle which was set ablaze along with the two Muslim youth

It is not too long ago when the issue of Cow beef was brought to the fore as an essential part of divisive communal politics. While we are talking of one Junaid here; there was another Junaid, a Madrassa student who was lynched while travelling in a train on the suspicion that he had beef in his Tiffin. We recall Mohammad Akhlaq and fate of Pehlu Khan. Lynching was politically-socially introduced as a peak of communal violence directed against Muslim community. One recalls that it was the murder of Akhlaq which precipitated the ‘Award Wapasi’ (returning national honors) trend among our foremost writers, scientists, social workers and what have you. Indian Spend reports “Muslims were the target of 51% of violence centered on bovine issues over nearly eight years (2010 to 2017) and comprised 86% of 28 Indians killed in 63 incidents. As many of 97 per cent of these attacks were reported after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government came to power in May 2014, and about half the cow-related violence — 32 of 63 cases –were from states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) when the attacks were reported, revealed our analysis of violence recorded until June 25, 2017.”

The hate spread against Muslims (and also Christians) has gone to horrific limits. In addition to those who are RSS affiliates, other Hindu Sena type of organizations have sprung up, dime a dozen. They merrily take the law in their hands, while some bigwigs keep formally saying that they should not take law in their hands. The crimes which are committed against this minority are highlighted with aplomb and many a times these crimes are live streamed on face book (Monu Manesar face book shows that) or videos are circulated as Shambhulal Regar who killed Afrazul and videotaped the killing.

Many of these culprits are honored publicaly. The murder accused of Kalimuddin Ansari were greeted by Jayant Sinha, the then union Minster. Processions were taken out in support of the culprits of Asifa, the eight year old, who was subjected to rape and murder in Kashmir. One also recalls the murder of IT engineer Mohsin Shaikh who was murdered in Pune and now all the accused have been exonerated. They took out a victory march! There was also the incidence of a police officer Subodh Kumar Singh’s murder. The crime of this upright police officer was that he was trying to take proper action in the case of a dead cow thrown in the field of village Syana in UP.

In a way the ‘Cow-Beef’ issue was flagged off by none other than our Prime Minster who in a public speech said that Maharana Pratap dedicated his life for cow protection. New issues are regularly being added to the ‘Hate other’. Yesterday (26th February 2023) Vashi (New Bombay) area saw a big rally ‘Hindu Jan Akrsoh Rally’ (Hindu Mass resentment) shouting slogans against Muslims for Love Jihad and Land Jihad. One of the top Godi media (pro sectarianism media) anchor had presented a detailed chart of types of Jihad which have been unleashed in India! Goebbels dominates the media ecosystem of India!

As we are witnessing a downward spiral of increasing Hate, Violence and consequent polarization, the fraternity inherent in our Constitution is showing a downslide. The freedom movement saw an upward going spiral of communal amity, now is the time to revive those principles to lay the foundation of harmony, amity and peace. These surely are the prerequisites of progress of the country.

Transgender couple breaks social norms by welcoming a baby, highlighting rich cultural legacy in ancient India

In India, the transgender community faces significant opposition and discrimination. However, a recent headline has brought hope to the community as a transgender couple, Ziya Paval and Zahhad, have broken norms and had a baby. The couple’s story is a small but significant step in the ongoing struggle for acceptance and rights for sexual minorities in India.

Despite the challenges they face, the transgender community has a rich legacy in Hinduism. In the epic Ramayana, transgender community members are said to be the “original Ram bhakts.”

According to the legend, when Ram was banished to the forest, he urged all men and women followers to go home. Being neither, the transgenders waited 14 years for his return. When Ram came back, he found them waiting for him on the banks of the Saryu in Ayodhya. Deeply moved by their devotion, he blessed the outcasts or so goes the transgenders’ tale. This story is significant as it shows that in Kalyug, the age of darkness, the transgender community will be the political masters.

Mahabharata, which narrates the great war between the Pandavas and Kauravas, is the story of Princess Amba, who became Shikhandi in another birth. Through rebirth, subsequent cross-dressing, and ‘sex change’, Shikhandi plays one of the decisive roles in the outcome of that great war and a turning point in the epic.

Despite religious backing, transgender individuals are often disowned by their families and face societal ridicule and stigma in India. It goes against the constitutional values of fraternity and dignity, which are essential moral principles that should be practised in private and public life.

Commenting on the principle of fraternity in the Constituent Assembly, J. B. Kirpalani, a prominent member of the Constituent Assembly said, “I come to the great doctrine of fraternity which is allied with democracy. It means that we are all sons of the same God, as the religious would say, but as the mystic would say, that there is one life pulsating through us all, or as the Bible says, we are one of another. There can be no fraternity without this. So, I want this House to remember that what we have enunciated are not merely legal, constitutional and formal principles but moral principles and moral principles have to be lived in life. They have to live whether it is private or public life.”

However, in the past two decades, there have been some positive changes for sexual minorities in India. In 2014, the Supreme Court recognised a transgender person’s right to self-identification as male, female, or the third gender. Furthermore, in August 2016, the government introduced the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016 in Lok Sabha.

Social media has also played a role in building awareness and support for the transgender community. Ziya and Zahhad took advantage of social media to share their journey and build a positive narrative before society. They released pictures of their new family on Instagram, gaining attention and support from people around the world.

“The baby was born by around 9.30 am through a Caesarean Section at the Government Medical College Hospital,” Ziya Paval, one of the trans-partners, told reporters in Kozhikode. Both the baby and Zahhad, who delivered the child, are doing well, she added.

Despite the progress made, there is still a long way to go for sexual minorities in India. The societal boycott of transgender individuals goes against the moral principles enshrined in the Constitution. Society must continue to evolve and uphold the values of fraternity and dignity for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.

Safeguarding the natural habitat of Giant Leatherback turtles

0

Recently trafficking of turtles has been crucially increased and this matter seeks our grave concern regarding their protection. A report published by the Non-government organization TRAFFIC India indicates that at least 1,11,310 tortoises and freshwater turtles were smuggled from September 2009 to September 2019 for their tasty meat, ornamental value, and good luck charms. Along with this Environmental Pollution causes massive damage to their natural habitats.

Now the lives of Giant Leatherback Turtles are in great distress because their three natural nesting sites on the beaches in Andaman and Nicobar Islands are under threat due to the mega-development projects to be completed soon. There are 360 living species in the world and India has only 29 of them. The Giant Leatherback Turtle is the largest of the seven species of sea turtles, found in all oceans except the Arctic and the Antarctic. Other species are, Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill, Kemp’s Ridley, Flatback and Olive Ridley turtles.

The Leatherback, is the largest of all living turtles, they are almost 8.9 feet tall and weigh almost 500 kilograms. This hidden-necked turtle primarily lives in the open ocean with its dark grey or black-coloured body having oily flesh and flexible leather-like skin.

This animal belongs to the Animalia kingdom, Reptilia Class and Dermochelyidae family described by Italian naturalist Domenico Agostino Vandelli in 1761. In 1816, French herpetologist Henry Marie Ducrotay de Blainville gave its scientific name Dermochelys Coriacea. They eat jellyfish, hydrozoa, squid, octopus, cuttlefish, snails, sea urchins, and fish. They live up to 30-100 years and the females lay eggs on the beaches and create 26000-43000 nests globally every year.

In the Indian Ocean, Leatherback’s population generally remains unassessed and unevaluated. But India’s National Marine Turtle Action Plan released in February 2021 implies that the Galathea Bay area of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is an “Important Marine Turtle Habitat in India.”

Within the Indian Ocean, these Turtles nest only in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Andaman & Nicobar islands of India. Now, development projects for building international airports, transhipment ports, Greenfield townships, and power plants at the Galathea, Campbell bay under the Holistic Development project of Andaman & Nicobar island seed threats to the biodiversity of that region.

Firstly, the standing committee of the National Board of Wildlife and the Wildlife Institute of India objected to the Environmental Impact Assessment reports and later, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change eased the norms last November to approve the project. Experts believe that it is going to crevasse the marine ecosystem and leatherback is the main victim.

Leatherbacks are migratory animals and the beach area on little Andaman and great Nicobar island is a hotbed for their natural nesting. Due to these infrastructure projects the air, the soil, and the water will get polluted and these turtles will often feed on plastic flakes in the water that look like jellyfish. As they eat plastic and other riverine debris, their digestive system weakens, and nutrition gain slows down. In polluted water, female turtles can’t signal their pheromones to the males for mating. Eggs have been prayed for by Ghost crabs, monitor lizards, raccoons, coatis, dogs, coyotes, genets, mongoose and shore birds. There are problems due to malabsorption and chemical pollution. Streetlights, lights from buildings, offices, and lights from other sources are major threats to hatching as the Hatchlings become disoriented toward the light. Thus their lives and livelihoods are in crisis!

A study of Sea turtles in the southern Nicobar Islands by Manjula Tiwari under NOAA-National Marine Fisheries Services’ Marine Turtle Ecology and Assessment program shows that the collection of beach sand for construction purposes is a great ground to detriment their nesting. Scientist Dr Pankaj Sekhsaria claims in his article published in the Frontline magazine that he believes, “This whole development project put the pristine island, its priceless biodiversity and indigenous populations as well as the huge investment in danger”. There are two national parks, one biosphere reserve, and two tribes namely Nicobares and Shopian in the Great Nicobar Islands are facing fears of extinction. Visualizing the environmental vulnerability, Dr Sekhsaria describes it as a “Nicobar Nightmare.”

To control the unnecessary destruction of nests, collection of corals and beach sand. To educate the commoners and engage the tribals in the conservation of turtles. Also to enforce the law protecting their natural habitats, lots of efforts have been taken by various organizations, persons and researchers.

NGOs like Dakshin Foundation put efforts through their Dakshin Endeavour under the leadership of Adhith Swaminathan to save these natural nesting. Regarding the conservation of sea turtles, Dr BK Mahapatra, Principal Scientist and Scientist-in-Charge (retd), ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Kolkata, Ministry of Agriculture, GOI, notifies this Leatherback Turtle as a “keystone species”.

Dr Mahapatra mentions that they have also found in the Kalipur beach of Diglipur Forest Division. He says, “Training and awareness programs of different stakeholders for protecting and monitoring Leatherback turtles in the marine environment and on nesting beaches is an urgent need.”

Since 1980 there has been a dramatic decline in their population and Asian exploitation of turtle nests has been cited as the most significant factor for the species’ global population. The IUCN status of this species is vulnerable and also listed in Schedule I of India’s Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. So We’ve to think about it seriously.

Indian Women Have Strength to Upset Aussie Juggernaut in T20 World Cup Semi-Final

0

Mumbai: India-Australia clashes are the dominant flavour of the cricket season nowadays. Like their male counterparts battling with the Aussies at home, Harmanpreet Kaur and Co too will lock horns with the Australian Women in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2023 in South Africa. The blockbuster match on Thursday will be a repeat of the 2020 T20 World Cup final – while defending champions Australia would be aiming for a hat-trick of Women’s T20 World Cup trophy, Indian eves would be bidding for their first-ever ICC title.

The key question ahead of the mouth-watering battle is – Can the Women in Blue upset Meg Lannings’ top-ranked champion side?

The head-to-head record between the two teams puts Aussies as firm favourites for the match as Indian women have won only 7 of the 30 T20is played between the two sides; Australia grabbing 22 wins while one match ended without a result. Even in their respective journeys in the present World Cup, Aussies have been more assertive, winning all their four games easily in the group stage. But in contrast, the Indian women dropped their vital game against England even though they won the other three group matches quite convincingly.

Nevertheless, with a great blend of youth, talent and experience, the Indians have the potential to grab the World Cup glory. In Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, India has two of the finest stroke makers in the game today though the skipper has been hardly at her best in the tournament until this moment. Scoring big, Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh have been central to the batting fluency in almost all matches and if Captain Kaur and opener Shaifali Verma can come good, there’s no reason why India can’t set up a winning target or chase down a challenging total. If the top order lives up to its potential and fires, India’s chances of winning will get a big boost.

While the Aussies have functioned like a well-oiled machine through the group stage, Indian bowling has been severely tested in this post-Jhulan Goswami era. Despite Renuka Singh’s dream spell against England, the Indian attack lacked firepower but Team India would be hoping that pace veteran Shikha Pandey and all-rounder Deepti Sharma continue their fine form and restrict Aussie batters with a disciplined display.

Apart from bowling limitations, a major area of concern for Women in Blue is the long-standing dot-ball issue. Kaur has admitted India’s inability to rotate the strike is a big worry especially as Indians struggled with strike rotation even in the series against Australia last December and the Tri-series earlier this month. The problem persists in the World Cup as India had 51 and 41 dot balls in the Group games against England and Ireland respectively.

Obviously, improving strike rotation alone will help achieve greater aggression and a positive mind is a must in crunch games. Grafting for runs has brought about downfall at crucial junctures since the pressure induces going for improbable big shots, leading to the disastrous dismissal of key batters. Harmanpreet and Shaifali have been guilty of throwing their wickets with diabolical slogs and this mindset needs to be curbed in the knock-out games.

Despite past records and the odds being stacked in favour of Australia, Team India does have a few things going in their favour. The semi-final is at Newlands in Cape Town where India has played two of their four matches while it will be Australia’s first game on that surface. Familiarity with local conditions, especially the slow-paced wicket, could be a big plus for India. In addition, massive support for India at Newlands could give India a slight psychological advantage over Australia – a key factor as the result in crunch games often depends on which team handles the pressure better.

Moreover, in recent weeks, Indian women’s cricket has been in the news for a number of positive reasons – from the historic victory in the Women’s Under-19 World Cup to the auctions for the Women’s Indian Premier League (WPL). The morale in the Indian camp has been sky-high after all the leading players fetched big bucks in WPL. Hence, if there is one team that has come close to beating the mighty Australians in recent times, it is India as it was the last team to defeat the Aussies. Why even in the Commonwealth Games Final last year, India lost narrowly by just 9 runs!

If the glorious victory by Indian girls in the U-19 T20 World Cup last month and the emphatic wins by Rohit Sharma and Co over the Aussies in the first two tests are any inspiration, the ‘Women in Blue’ can surely surprise the defending champions. With both sides packed with top-quality batters and balanced bowling attacks, it could be a cracker of a contest. For Captain Kaur and her Blue Brigade, the World Cup semis is a tough but not impossible assignment. After all, sports history is full of stirring episodes of David beating Goliath!!

What Do You Know About The Investments of George Soros, The Latest Critic Of PM Modi

0

DelhiThe Hungary-born US-based billionaire has left his footprints in India through his Open Society Foundation. This trust has been working in India since 1999 after George Soros hit the world by weakening a few currencies and minting money.

In India, the Open Society Foundation has helped more than 40,000 Micro Small and Middle Enterprises and more than 37 lakh poor people. It gives more than six hundred scholarships every year as well.

According to the OSF official website, “OSF organises a career recognition program for students in Senior school and Junior colleges to give them a pathway to choose collegiate programs” through Operation Sahay Foundation.

Its official website claims, “OSF provides resources for basic schooling – a good bag, lunch box, water bottle, notebooks and stationery items. We identify such schools where this is a necessity. This will stimulate their desire to attend school regularly. Parents from a poor economic background are also much relieved by this provision.”

Operation Sahay Foundation is not a clandestine organisation. It is based in Bangalore, works openly and boasts of “running the programme designed to benefit the deprived in Education & Training, Healthcare and Social Upliftment.”

Operation Sahay Foundation also runs Sahay Arogya Yojana. Its official website writes,

“Projects under Sahay Aarogya Yojana of OSF include AMP (Aarogya Medical Points that works for the betterment of basic medical access in remote locations. Providing Oxygen Concentrator and consumables for non-commercial Covid19 care providers (hospitals). Making available Oxygen Concentrators for Covid patients who are prescribed to use them for a temporary duration.”

OSF also runs Sahay Krishi Yojana.

Why has the nationalist government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi not taken stern actions against the Open Society Foundation, which, in Union Minister Smriti Irani’s words, ‘has mounted a war against India’ by criticising the prime minister?

Oswal Group of companies set up a fertiliser plant in Punjab’s Sangrur in 2013 and the Soros Fund invested a whopping Rs. 1,530 crores in the project.

George Soros Fund has invested in other projects as well.

Besides, George Soros has invested thousands of crores of rupees in the Indian stock market through Foreign Institutional Investors. Again, it can not be a clandestine operation and must be under the watch of the stock market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India.

Soros Fund has invested in companies dealing with food processing, vegetable oil, pharmaceuticals, fertilisers and other businesses.

In Tamil Nadu, Soros Fund also runs Be Well Hospitals that claims to have ‘benefitted 5,00,000 patients, 10,000 health checkups, performing 30,000 surgeries’

According to its website, “The hospital hopes to see more people in India and around the world getting non-compromised, evidence-based healthcare. Working towards this end, Be Well has been setting up hospitals with world-class infrastructure in locations that currently have limited access to healthcare.”

It aims to ‘establish secondary care hospitals (50 to 75 beds) in all semi-urban & district headquarters towns across India and create a bigger network delivering big promises. Be Well will become the first organised private player in this “secondary plus healthcare model”, an integrator between primary and tertiary care hospitals.’

Open Society Foundation also funds the French NGO Sherpa. According to its official website, this organisation claims to ‘fight new forms of impunity linked to globalisation, work for human rights and environmental protection in value chains, and tackle illicit financial flows.’

French organisation Sherpa moved the Supreme Court against the Rafale Deal in 2018, it might have unnerved the ruling party and the government.

The OSF also helps the Human Rights Law Network, Coordination of Democratic Rights Organisation, Right to Food Campaign, Centre for Policy Research, Association of Democratic Research, and Namati of Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen.

When the government put 18 NGOs under its watch list in 2016, it included Soros Fund Management.

But the pertinent question remains, why has the government under Modi not taken action against these operations?

Attacking Soros, Union Minister Smriti Irani said, “The man who broke the Bank of England. A man who is known and designated as an economic war criminal by a nation has now pronounced his desire to break Indian democracy.”

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar called George Soros ‘old, rich, opinionated and dangerous’.

Attending the Raisina Conference in the Australian city of Sydney, he said, “But he is old, rich, opinionated and dangerous because what happens is when such people, such views and such organisations – they actually invest resources in shaping narratives.”

The knee-jerk reaction of the government raises another question. Is the Indian government following the Chinese model of Wolf Warrior diplomacy?

‘Wolf Warrior diplomacy’ is the belligerent language used by Chinese diplomats since Xi Jinping came to power. Instead of introspecting, the government spokespersons come out with strong words and point out the history of western hypocrisy and imperialism.

The Wolf Warrior spokespersons of the Chinese government paint anything critical as an interference in its internal affairs.

They also call any criticism of the regime an attack on its civilisation, history, and values and a plot by foreign powers unable to stomach the rise of a rival in Asia.

Are we following the Chinese?
