Virat Propels Team India To Victory Over Pakistan In Unforgettable Thriller

0

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]ometh the hour, cometh the man! On Sunday evening, a day prior to Diwali, Indian cricket fans got the best gift from their superstar, King Kohli – a win against arch-rival Pakistan in the T20 World Cup. While there were many stars on the night, there was only one chant that resonated through the 90 thousand-plus packed Melbourne stadium at the end of the game, “Kohli, Kohli.” His superlative innings, for which all adjectives fall short, enabled Indians to celebrate like crazy after a game which went right down to the last ball as India won by 4 wickets!

It was a match that India could easily have lost but ‘King’ Kohli rekindled his ace form and steely resolve to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. India won the toss and bowled first to take advantage of the swinging conditions. Mohammad Shami was back in the playing 11 and India preferred two spinners– Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin. Pakistan began nervously as Babar Azam went for a Golden Duck in the second over. Not long after, they were reduced to 15 for 2 as Rizwan too was claimed by Arshdeep. The repair job was soon started by Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed. While seamers were hard to take runs off, the spinners went for plenty, especially Axar who gave away 21 runs in his only over. That forced Rohit to bring back Shami in the 13th over which worked like a charm as Pakistan lost their third wicket.

A collapse in the middle overs left Pakistan wobbly at 120 for 7 in the17th over. But Shaheen hit a brisk 16 of 8 balls to take Pakistan to a par total of 159. With a pitch which offered a lot of bounce and seemed suitable for Pakistan’s fiery speedsters, 160 was a fighting target.

India began their chase poorly and lost both Rohit and Rahul within the first couple of overs. With Virat at the other end, Suryakumar started confidently by hitting his first ball to the boundary. But he perished soon after for just 15 runs gloving a Haris Rauf delivery to the keeper. There was a mini-surprise when Axar Patel, the only left-hander in the line-up, was sent ahead of Hardik Pandya at number 5. Later, at the post-match presentation, Rohit revealed that Axar was sent in to prevent exposing the middle order to the Pakistan pace trio who were steaming in at full tilt at that time.

Unfortunately, Axar was soon run out cheaply as India faltered to 32 for 4 after 6 overs. As Hardik Pandya made his way to the crease, it looked like a herculean task for India to stage a comeback. Kohli and Hardik, however, calmed the nerves by rotating the strike for a while. But the required rate kept going up and one of Kohli and Hardik had to up the ante if India was to have any chance of making a dent in the total.

It was then that the Batting Gods showered special blessings on Kohli who had scored just 12 of 21 balls at one point. Taking control of the innings, Kohli soon powered his way to a cracking half-century of 43 balls. His 2 crucial sixes in the 19th over bowled by Pakistan’s best bowler on the night, Haris Rauf, bore a stamp of his special class. A magnificent six of Nawaz in the last over brought India to the brink of a famous win. Nervousness got to Nawaz as he bowled full tosses, no ball and wides to hand India a tense last-ball win where Ashwin kept his cool to chip one over mid-off to close the game.

All eyes however were focused on Kohli as he punched the ground teary-eyed even as Indian players rushed to the pitch to celebrate with him. With fans and experts applauding his glorious knock of 82 in 53 balls, Virat’s actor-wife, Anushka Sharma took to Instagram to celebrate his critical role in India’s marvellous win. “You beauty! You freaking beauty!! You have brought sooooo much joy in people’s lives tonight and that too on the eve of Diwali,” wrote Anushka in a caption under photos of Virat celebrating with his teammates. Praising his ‘grit, determination and belief’, Anushka asserted that this was the best match she had watched in her life – and most Indian fans might agree with the Bollywood star wife’s justifiably proud ranting!

One must recall that in the past couple of years, while Virat had to face plenty of abuse for his poor form; Anushka too was not spared by passionate fans. Remembering the tough times and mental stress they experienced recently, Anushka added in her post that someday her little daughter will grow up to “understand that her dad played his best innings… which followed after a phase that was tough on him but he came out of it stronger and wiser than ever before!”

With Virat taking the Men in Blue to a morale-boosting victory, cricket fans hope the momentum generated by this thrilling win will propel Team India to regain the T20 trophy that has remained elusive ever since their triumph in the 2007 World Cup.

Xi Jinping Tightens Grip, Eases Out Li Keqiang

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]hinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang is most likely to resign in March 2023 when the National People’s Congress is scheduled to meet. He may be replaced by Wang Huning, who has worked relentlessly on ideology, party organisation, discipline and the fight against corruption within the Chinese Communist Party.

He has been promoted in the Polit Bureau Standing Committee to number 2.

The CCP Congress was attended by 2,296 delegates who elected 205 members of the Central Committee. The CC has elected a 25-member Polit Bureau and the seven-member all-powerful Standing Committee.

It is the Standing Committee that rules the party and the country if there is collective leadership, a rare quality under Xi Jinping.

Four current members have not been included in the new Standing Committee, to be unveiled on Sunday in the Great Hall of The People.

Li Keqiang is one of the people who has been left out.

Foreign Minister Wang Yang, once tipped to be the Premier too has been left out.

Han Zheng, former Shanghai party chief, and Li Zhanshu, the speaker of the National People’s Congress have not been included.

With these changes in the Standing Committee, the way for Wang Huning has been paved.

The three who remain on the Standing Committee are Xi, 69, Wang Huning, known for his work on ideology, and Zhao Leji who heads the CPC discipline apparatus.

It was Jiang Zemin who brought Wang Huning to the higher echelons of the party.

Zemin made Wang head of the Central Policy Research Office, a party think tank. He remained there for 15 years before being elevated to the Polit Bureau in 2017, by Xi Jinping.

Wang Huning has worked closely with three presidents- Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping. He has been the chief speech-writer of these three presidents as well.

Wang has been elevated because he is a rare combination of national policy adviser, chief speech-writer and principal theorist to the country’s top leader.

His importance and closeness to the party General Secretary can be understood by the fact that he has accompanied him on many important state visits and significant internal trips.

He was on Xi Jinping’s trip to Hong Kong in July for the 25th anniversary of the city’s return to China.

Xi Jinping’s grip on the CCP can be gauged by the fact that its constitution was amended Saturday to include ‘Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for the New Era’ in its charter.

Two ‘Establishments’ and ‘Two Upholds’ were included in the CCP constitution at the closing session of the party Congress Saturday.

One of the Two Establishments means to establish Xi’s status as the ‘core’ of the CPC’s Central Committee and of the whole party. The second establishment means the inclusion of Xi Jinping Thoughts in the charter.

A resolution was passed in this context. It was made mandatory for all party members to “uphold Comrade Xi Jinping’s core position on the Party Central Committee and in the party as a whole.”

This resolution was passed unanimously in the closing session of Congress.

The amendment also included the opposition to Taiwan’s Independence in its charter.

A resolution was passed, that reads, “The Congress agrees to include in the party constitution statements on… resolutely opposing and deterring separatists seeking ‘Taiwan independence.’

Another amendment to the CCP constitution includes “developing ‘fighting spirit’, promoting ‘Chinese-style modernisation’, recognising the party as the ‘supreme political leadership force’ and gradually achieving ‘common prosperity.’

Interestingly, all these phrases have been used by the party General Secretary several times.

The most significant ‘princeling has emerged as the new ‘tsar’ of the communist party and the party has put its seal on it.

Great Drama At The Great Hall Of The People

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t is difficult to explain why and how the two-time General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and the former President of the Country Hu Jintao was led out of the podium of the party Congress. The CCP meetings are highly choreographed and it is most unlikely that something happened suddenly and Hu Jintao was led out by a marshal who picked him up from his chair. It can be seen that two marshals went to the former president, said something, picked him up by arms and removed him from his chair. Hu Jintao can be seen protesting, talking to present supremo Xi Jinping, trying to hold a piece of paper, resisted by the CCP Secretary General. He also told Xi something and patted Prime Minister Li Keqiang. He was reluctant to leave, he protested, but the 79-year-old leader was led out, most possibly by force.

It can not be ruled out at the same time the 79-year-old former Chinese president fell ill suddenly as he was sick. But he is seen protesting and talking to Xi Jinping. All this happened in front of cameras and in the presence of the world press.

Xi Jinping systematically removed or sidelined all of his opponents, particularly the Shanghai Gang or the ‘tuanpai group. Besides Hu Jintao, his predecessor Jiang Zemin and former CCP first Secretary Zheng Qinghong were important members of the so-called Shanghai Gang.

Xi Jinping represented the group of the ‘princelings’ or the children of the revolutionaries.

There has been a continuous clash between the two groups in the power struggle and Xi Jinping has succeeded in crushing the rival group ruthlessly. After he got full control of the party and the administration and got the nod for the third term, Xi Jinping might have thought it appropriate to send an extremely strong signal to the party and all of the possible dissenters.

But again, the 79-year-old leader was looking pale and weak, all of his hair was grey. He might have suffered suddenly though he did not show any signal of the same.

No one knows the truth, the CCP is most unlikely to explain it and Hu Jintao will not be allowed to open his mouth, neither his statement will be made public.

It is difficult to know the truth, the iron curtain is still there, perhaps longer and stronger than the Great Wall of China.

India-Pakistan Match Promises A Blockbuster At T20 World Cup

0

India and Pakistan will open their campaign for the T20 World Cup 2022 with a blockbuster clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on October 23. With the arch-rivals battling, the biggest cricketing rivalry will unfold in the marquee match on Sunday. Pakistan had trounced India by 10 wickets in the T20 WC encounter last year. As Rohit Sharma leads the Men in Blue into a World Cup event for the first time, the key question is can Team India turn the tables this time?

To this seemingly simple query, there is no easy answer. After the defeat in the World Cup last year, India came back strongly in the first match of the Asia Cup T20 recently and outclassed Pakistan by 5 wickets at the group stage. But a week later, Pakistan turned things around, won by 5 wickets and ousted India from the Finals.

In effect, the Asia Cup, a virtual dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup, saw the Asian Giants sharing the two matches. Despite the Asia Cup hiccup, Team India enters the World Cup on a high as they scored back-to-back series wins at home against Australia and South Africa. They also reached Australia nearly three weeks ago to acclimatise to the conditions Down Under. Besides, they’ve played a few practice matches and even beat hosts Australia in a warm-up game.

On the batting side, India has a strong and settled line-up. The top five comprising Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya have the class and quality that could be the envy of any side. Each one of them is in good nick, can swing any game and together they lend amazing fire-power to India’s batting might. In particular, Surya Kumar has been a special delight this year and often seems to be toying with bowlers. Surya is now possibly the most important cog in India’s batting wheel and even Pakistani great Wasim Akram recently said that SKY could well be the biggest threat to Pakistan.

With Dinesh Karthik dovetailing as India’s specialist finisher and Axar Patel proving to be a handy replacement for the classy all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, there are some little debates for most slots in the team.

On the bowling front, however, there are some grave concerns and selection dilemmas. With pace-ace Jasprit Bumrah injured, Mohammad Shami was drafted in but he bowled just one over against Australia and then the warm-up game with New Zealand was washed out, leaving him short of match practice. With Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar almost sure to feature, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid think tank has to choose the 3rd seamer from Shami and Harshal Patel.

Among the spinners too, the Rohit-Rahul team has to decide between Yuzi Chahal and Ravi Ashwin as the front-line spinner. As Pakistan is likely to play a few left-handed batters, Ashwin could get the nod as the more economical option who also adds to the batting depth.

If India’s bowling is a worry, the Pakistan batting is a tad fragile. Skipper and star batter Babar Azam poses the biggest threat to India along with his opening partner, Mohammad Rizwan. The rest of the Pakistan batters are rather inconsistent and despite the return of the dangerous leftie Fakhar Zaman, a serious question mark persists over their batting unit.

In contrast, Pakistani bowling is one of the most formidable in the world and has been greatly bolstered by the return of Shaheen Afridi, the ICC Cricketer of 2021. The 6-foot 6-inch fast bowler had knocked India out with his deadly new-ball spell in last year’s encounter and earned Pakistan its first-ever win over India in any World cup format. Besides Afridi, Naseem Shah, who starred in the recent Asia Cup, could be a huge threat on bouncy tracks in Australia. Leggie Shadab Khan and left arm Mohammad Nawaz also provide a spinning edge to the fearsome bowling attack.

Overall, given the potential of the two sides, India and Pakistan could well provide another high-octane contest as they square off against each other in the T20 World Cup. Ahead of the contest, a slug-fest has erupted between cricket boards. With the BCCI claiming they will not play the next Asia Cup if it is not shifted to a neutral venue, the PCB has threatened to skip the ODI World Cup in India next year. The politics and the hype have sharpened the keen sense of anticipation over the mega clash.

As cricket lovers await the high-voltage clash, rain threatens to play a spoiler. According to weather experts, there’s a 90% chance of rain in Melbourne on the day of the India-Pakistan battle. Inevitably, the prospects of a shortened game are pretty high. As such, Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam will need to prepare alternative plans and tactics in case the match is curtailed or conditions play spoilsport.

Shortened games, however, often turn out even more thrilling and the India-Pakistan game could well prove to be a nail-biting humdinger!

How on three occassions, Mallikarjun Kharge missed the chance to become chief minister

0

There are tons of memories and of course, it’s hard to figure out where to start. So this is going to be random and rambly, but I hope it will be useful to kind of get an idea of the man behind the public figure that Mallikarjun Kharge is.

I’m not going into the debate of ‘is he the man who can take on the BJP or resurrect Congress’ because that is not the point of this exercise. I just want to acknowledge a man who has definitely always been the best choice and has always not got what he wanted or what he deserved due to obvious reasons as well as circumstances.

The son of a mill worker who just kept rising: that’s what we can publicly see. He was Congres state president and a very effective opposition leader. Knowledgeable on the floor of the house and off it. He is also very funny and bitingly sarcastic, when he can relax and chat.

I remember one occasion when the late ND Shivakumar and I were on an election tour in Gulbarga and we got to ride in his car with him through the dust and heat. He held us enthralled for a good two hours with reminiscences of various political incidents from Karnataka history, his youth and how things were in the olden days. Shivu told me afterwards: “I never knew he could be that friendly and tell us such inside stories with so much warmth.” Yes and I agree, Shivu.

The other occasion I recall where he surprised people was when he came for a Times event and had all our senior staff in splits with his very witty jokes. He made no fuss about attending the event, waited patiently for all other participants to turn up, held the stage and upstaged everyone present (including other senior politicians), because he was relaxed and in full flow that day. I remember people telling me “we never knew he was so funny and had such conversation capabilities! We never see this?”. Yes, true.

Mallikarjun Kharge receives certificate from outgoing president Sonia Gandhi

Always, always, Kharge sahebru has chosen his words very carefully. He has been very conscious of the impact on his image and also on his people, so he never says anything that has not been precisely reasoned out. It is not easy being a Dalit leader through the eras that he has seen and it is still not easy being a Dalit leader today. His plus has been that he knows the grassroots pulse and has been as shrewd as Deve Gowdru in assessing it and harnessing it.

In my mind, it’s an absolute tragedy that he never got to be chief minister. A senior journo once told me: “Karnataka will never allow it” and I was horrified to hear that. But turned out I am the idealist dreamer and the senior journo whom I was furious with for saying that was actually correct. Why, oh why is not merit and ability the only criterion for leadership? Yes, I hear all the anti-reservation bunch sitting up and taking note of my point here, but has it struck anyone that “reservation” actually works both ways? And prevents really “samartha” people from the Dalit communities from reaching real posts of power?

In the first round, Kharge sahebru lost out to SMK, who came from nowhere, took out a Panchajanya yatra (that Kharge also organized) and took the chief minister’s post. What about the 5 years of battling with Deve Gowda and J H Patel that Kharge did as leader of the opposition, so very efficiently? Ah well, when the CM had to be decided, it was SMK as party prez at the last minute and not the man who fought the Janata Parivar for 5 years. And this was a decision that Sonia Ji took.

Round two was the Congress-JDS govt where Siddaramaiah was deputy chief minister. “Set dose” as Dharam Singh-Kharge-HK Patil were called at that time stood strong. Kharge stayed silent when his pal Dharam Singh was favoured and given the job. And soldiered on for the party, as always.

And round three was the face-off with Siddaramaiah. This was at least an election in the Congress Legislature Party. And since the 2013 election was basically a Siddarmaiah show, this was the one where Kharge had the least right to be bitter. But Kharge was the actual Congress leader, Siddaramaiah was the incoming one. And it was, even in his head, the last chance he had at getting to the post. And it was the one rare occasion where he showed me his despair at having lost the post.

To my mind, he would’ve been a really strong and efficient CM. He has always been a quiet worker, though he can deliver good oratory whenever it is needed. He researches as much as Siddaramaiah or Deve Gowda. He knows all the details of every single thing he speaks about. He has a great deal of administrative experience and has a firm hand dealing with partymen, bureaucracy and the public. There is really no one who does not have respect for him.

But, he has never pushed himself forward or pushed anyone else down. He is not a man to wear his heart on his sleeve. And so, he is often just taken for granted.

I am glad that, for whatever reason and in whatever circumstances, he has at least been the de facto opposition leader in Lok Sabha and has now been given the topmost position in his party. Yes, people will say puppet and etc, but he will do his best and he will do it in his own quiet way. He did and does deserve way more and I am not satisfied with the rewards his political diligence and life have given him. But knowing Kharge sahebru, he will say: “Yen agot nodan bidri“. And quote a shyer.

Unnecessary Hijab ban debate is going on in Supreme Court: Ashok Ganguly

Kolkata: Former Supreme Court Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly has said that the hijab ban debate going on in the Supreme Court is unnecessary and that the ban on hijab in educational institutions is undemocratic and unconstitutional.

The former SC judge was commenting on the ongoing hijab ban controversy, especially the ban in educational institutions, while he was addressing a function in Kolkata recently.

Without mincing words, he said, ”India is a secular country. Here, the Constitution provides equal rights to people of all religions and languages. However, in recent times, some evil forces are trying to destroy the cultural atmosphere of the country.”

Recently, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court has given a split verdict on the hijab ban order by the Karnataka High Court, which has directly impacted the school education of scores of Muslim schoolgirls in Karnataka.

In the two-judge bench, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia of the apex court set aside the hijab ban by the Karnataka HC, while Justice Hemant Gupta agreed with the decision and dismissed 26 appeals filed against the high court judgment.

Justice Dhulia said in his judgment: By asking the girls to take off their hijab before they enter the school gates, is first an invasion of their privacy, then it is an attack on their dignity, and then ultimately it is a denial to them of secular education. These are clearly violative of Article 19(1)(a), Article 21 and Article 25(1) of the Constitution of India.
Indeed, Ganguly asserted that he agrees with the judgment of Sudhanshu Dhulia that the hijab ban is undemocratic and unconstitutional.

Justice Ganguly said, ”This is an unnecessary ban which is being debated in the Supreme Court. I strongly support the views which have been expressed by Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia that the ban is undemocratic and unconstitutional.”

On October 16, the Calcutta Khilafat Committee organised a student felicitation event, in which, along with Ganguly, other dignitaries were also present, including Dr Sashi Panja, Minister of Women and Child Development in West Bengal, Minority Affairs Minister Md Ghulam Rabbani, minister Javed Ahmed Khan, ex-Member of Parliament, Ahmed Hasan, and Dr NK Chakraborty, Vice-Chancellor of NUJS.

The former justice discussed various aspects of education in his insightful and strong speech. He said, ”People should be aware of society’s moral values, patriotism and democracy.”

Ganguly, who has been the chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission, compared the ban on hijab as similar to taking away the constitutional rights of Indian citizens. He categorically stated, ”The Constitution of the country has given the right of religion and culture to everyone, but some people are trying to take it away. No State can exist without the expression to preserve the constitutional principles. Everybody must have noted that when a government comes to power, the State has to take an oath to obey the principles of the Constitution, The oath of honesty and discharging public duty. And in a manner which inspires confidence in the minds of everybody, not only those who are represented in your party but even those who are opposite of you, who are criticizing you, because it’s a republic.”

The former judge, who has been seen on the streets joining peaceful demonstrations and marching for the assertion of the fundamental rights of Indian citizens, said he will always raise his voice in support of the right to personal liberty. ”I have participated in a march in support of the person’s right to wear a hijab. I believe that it is my duty as a former judge to uphold the principles of the Constitution.”

The judge also recalled his teaching days. ”I started my career as a school teacher and I believe that teaching is the most honoured position. Unless you have good teachers, you can’t build a nation. You can object and rise against the injustice that is the essence of education.”

”You must preserve the character of the republic. Everybody has a right to rethink and express their views freely. These are the tenets our Constitution preaches,” he told the students, and others present at the event.

Why Sourav Ganguly is being deprived, let him contest ICC election: Mamata Banerjee

0

Kolkata: The departure of former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly from the post of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President has taken a political turn.

Today, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the former skipper was being denied a second term as BCCI president. She appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to let the former Team India captain contest the International Cricket Council’s election.

Soon after her allegation, Congress’ Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Suvendu Adhikari attacked her for doing politics on the issue.

Mamata Banerjee told newsmen on Monday, “My humble request to the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) that Saurav (Ganguly) must be allowed to contest the ICC election. Why is he being deprived? What is his fault?”

She continued, “Everybody knows him, across the country and the world. We are proud of him, he is a Bengali brother, Dada. And the world knows him. But he is proud for country and the world. Whoever plays cricket, everybody knows him. Everyone knows him, he works with everyone. He is popular, that is why he is being deprived. I am really shocked.”

The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC)’s chairperson added, “Do not take it politically and vindictively. Take a decision. He is not a political person. Take decisions for cricket and sports.”

The left-hand batsman and one of the finest cricketers of Indian cricket history Ganguly was made BCCI president in 2019. His term has just ended. The former captain did not fight for a second term. While the BCCI secretary Jay Shah and few others like Rajeev Shukla will continue, Ganguly will be replaced by Roger Binny, a member of 1983 World Cup Champion team.

Leader of Opposition in Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari attacked Mamata Banerjee, “She should first remove Shahrukh Khan and make Saurav Ganguly the Brand Ambassador of West Bengal. Why has she realized his (Saurav Ganguly’s) greatness so late? She should not do politics over this.”

The Bollywood superstar was made Bengal’s Brand Ambassador in 2012, a year after TMC came to power in the state.

Adhikari claimed, “She should know that the prime minister does not intervene in cricket administration.”

While Adhir Ranjan reacted, why did Mamata Banerjee take so much time to react to it?

Congress MP said, “May be she realized that the issue is important for the people of Bengal. We all want Sourav to be appointed BCCI president.”

CPC Congress Sends Strong Signals To India

While presenting a detailed report on the achievements and transformation of the country in the last five years at the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, the General Secretary emphasized the importance of the People’s Liberation Army. Xi Jinping informed the gathering of 2,296 delegates at the Great Hall of the People about the feats of the Chinese Army.

He emphasized the future role of the army and claimed that the PLA should be modern, agile and able to win wars.

Xi Jinping informed the CPC delegates that he is committed to modernising the once infantry-dominated military by 2027. He also claimed that to achieve that goal, the People’s Liberation Army has undergone tremendous organizational changes and hardware upgrades. The General Secretary informed the CPC delegates that the ground force has been trimmed, while other services including the navy and rocket force have gained prominence.

He said, “We will intensify military training under combat conditions across the board to see that our armed forces can fight. We will innovate new military strategic guidance and develop strategies and tactics for people’s war, establish a strong system of strategic deterrence, increase the proportion of new domain forces with new combat capabilities, and intensify military training under combat conditions.”

But there was more in the store and it is very important and equally dangerous for India. While Xi Jinping was talking about these achievements of the army, a video was shown to the delegates.

The video contained the visuals of the clash that had taken place between the Indian and the Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.

As many as 38 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the skirmishes that took place in the Galwan Valley. The PLA and the Chinese MEA confirmed the incident and admitted that Chinese soldiers were killed in the incident, though they refused to divulge the number.

Besides, Qi Fabao, the regimental commander of the PLA, involved in the skirmishes with the Indian Army was given an important place at the Congress. He was sitting in the row just behind Xi Jinping. He was one of the 304 delegates from the PLA and People’s Armed Police chosen to attend the all-important meeting of the party. Before this, Qi Fabao was awarded the title of the Hero Regimental Commander. Not only this, Fabao was chosen by Beijing as the torch-bearer of the Winter Olympics Games held in China last year.

But these are only the tip of the iceberg. China has been accused of violating a number of agreements signed with India after 1993. The two countries signed deals to maintain peace and tranquillity along the Line Of Actual Control. An agreement was signed between the two countries in 1996 that made it mandatory for both of them to inform each other before making any movement involving more than 5,000 troops.

Under the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement of 2013, any doubts on the LAC could be resolved by flag meetings or meetings of high- ranking officials of the two armies.

But all these agreements were thrown into the wind when the PLA troops entered the Indian side of the LAC stealthily in May 2020 and refused to budge claiming that it was their area.

After 16 rounds of talks between local commanders of the two armies, the PLA agreed to pull out most of its troops from the Indian territories. But hundreds of Chinese soldiers are still occupying sizeable areas of Despsang and Doklam.

China has also made permanent constructions, set up a few villages and populated them with their people on the Indian territories, besides making roads and bridges on the Indian side of the much-disputed LAC.

The PLA intruded into India and kept its troops stationed for months at the tri-junction of India, Bhutan and China in 2018. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2018 and discussed with President Xi Jinping. The Chinese President visited India in 2019 and met Modi in the southern state of Tamilnadu to improve the bilateral ties. Only a few months after this much-hyped summit talks, the PLA sent its troops to capture a big swathe of Indian territory in May 2020.

This happened when Xi Jinping was at the helm of the affair. He held the offices of the CCP General Secretary, Chairman of the Military Commission and the President of the country. He faced no challenge nor was he under any type of pressure in his country.

Playing the video of clashes between the two counties at the once in five year party congress is enough to send strong signals to its neighbours.

Will Xi Jinping Eclipse Mao Zedong?

All eyes are set on the Communist Party of China which will begin its 20th Congress Sunday morning in the Great Hall of People in Beijing.

It will begin with an address by General Secretary Xi Jinping. All the meetings will be held closed doors with no indication of media coverage, but certain points are obvious.

About 2,300 delegates will attend the 20th CPC Congress, representing more than 96 million CPC members and over 4.9 million primary-level Party organizations.

Xi Jinping is most likely to get the third term as the CPC General Secretary. If it happens, he will go down in history as the only person after the legendary Mao Zedong to be at the helm for such a long period.

All his predecessors including the stalwarts like Hu Jintao and Jiang Zemin accepted the unwritten rule of holding the powerful office for a maximum of two terms.

Xi Jinping also holds the office of the Chairman of the Military Commission, an extremely powerful position.

He may be re-elected President of the country when the National People’s Congress, the Chinese Parliament, meets in March of next year.

Deg Xiaoping held the offices of the Chairman of the Military Commission and the CCP Secretary General, but he never became the president of the country.

Political observers believe Xi Jinping may get another term to fulfil his famous Chinese Dream.

Soon after getting elected as the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, Xi announced a political slogan and called it the China Dream.

He called it the ‘great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.’ Xi envisaged that China should become a fully developed nation at the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Revolution in 2049.

The Chinese Dream has four parts: strong China, civilized China, harmonious China, and beautiful China.

But the most significant part of the China Dream is to make it a military superpower that is second to none.

Xi Jinping carried out significant reforms in the People’s Liberation Army, reduced the number of troops, and gave marching orders to many senior and hawkish generals.
Secondly, he launched the process of modernizing the PLA, giving it state-of-the-art weapons and a modern warfare system, matched only by the US.

Xi Jinping also dreamt to make the country the economic superpower and it has already eclipsed the biggest economy, the US.

He launched the ambitious Belt and Road Initiative. Consequently, Chinese firms are working on infrastructure projects in Latin America, the African continent, part of Europe and Asia.

Projects worth about USD  500 billion are under different levels of construction around the world.

Xi Jinping aims to make a significant change in the industrial and economic scenario of the country.

From the manufacturing hub of the world, he wants to make China a centre of innovation, a knowledge-based economy. Chinese firms have been asked to focus on artificial intelligence, virtual reality, the Internet, chips, semiconductors, electric vehicles, solar batteries and power generated from nuclear fusion.

The Chinese people are learning the English language and sooner than later they may overtake India in the BPO business.

China needs its leader to continue so that he could achieve the dream of the country. Xi Jinping wiped out all sorts of opposition or challenge to his leadership in the garb of uprooting corruption. Generals, party stalwarts, high ranking officials have been either put behind the bars or sidelined.

A few days before the CPC Congress, former Deputy Public Security Minister, Sun Lijun, was jailed for life.

Sun Lijun was sentenced for giving and taking bribes, manipulating the stock market and illegally owning firearms.

He was handed a suspended death sentence that will be commuted to life imprisonment after two years.

By putting behind bars a high official ahead of the party Congress, the General Secretary has sent a message down the rank and file of the party.

But just two days ahead of the congress, three banners appeared on a flyover at the Haidian area of the capital city of Beijing.

One of the banners read: “No Covid test, we want to eat. No restrictions, we want freedom. No lies, we want dignity. No Cultural Revolution, we want reform. No leaders, we want votes. By not being slaves, we can be citizens.”

The other called on residents to “go on strike at school and work, remove the dictator and national traitor Xi Jinping”.

More significantly, many people have come forward on social media platforms to praise the lone protester’s actions.

He has been hailed as a “hero” and referred to as the “new Tank Man” – a reference to the unknown Chinese man who stood in front of tanks during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.

The protest and the sentencing of the high official ahead of the CPC Congress have underlined the simmering discontent against the powerful leader.

Such protests are insignificant in a country with a population of 150 crores. But the symbolism can not be ruled out.

Will Xi Jinping get another five-year term, will his doctrine be adopted as the Xi Jinping Thought in the Chinese Communist Party constitution? Will he eclipse Mao Zedong who had put his father behind the bars?

The Great Hall of People will echo the answers to these questions soon.
