Bhopal Gas Web Series Stirs New Generation, But Tragedy Far From Over

[dropcap]I[/dropcap] am not the ideal reviewer because I am too close to Bhopal. I have seen every documentary and most of the photos taken. I was standing beside the photographer when some of the pictures used in the series were taken.

I was excited when I heard that a series about Bhopal was going to be released on Netflix, and I watched The Railway Men with anticipation because my favorite actor’s son had a central role, and I wanted him to succeed. Babil, as Imad Riaz, is great. He spoke with a theet Bhopali dialect and acted really well.

I wish the writers had focused more on some of the individuals and their lives, showing more of the essence of the city I know so well.

There were some very powerful moments in the series that brought tears to my eyes, especially when Babil spoke about his friend based on Ashraf Khan, the real-life worker killed in 1981. Babil was his best friend, and I knew the family of the real Babil, whose name was Chand mia.

When I saw the disabled boy, I wasn’t shocked because that is the reality of Bhopal, and people are living it, still suffering illness and disease due to the gas, still being poisoned by water made toxic by Union Carbide’s negligence.

The thing is that The Railway Men has stirred the new generation, unfortunately, it has also brought out those looking for narrow political point-scoring, reducing a tragedy of a thousand crimes, and counting, to the single event of Anderson’s flight from India.

This is partly the result of the narrow focus of the series, whose narrative is restricted, barring one scene, to a few days in 1984. There have been 14,000 days of neglect, injustice, and suffering since, and some viewers may be left mistakenly thinking that history’s worst industrial disaster is just history. Bhopal has a beginning but no end.

I appreciate watching Menon’s work again, and Juhi Chawla was excellent as ever. I felt that some of the subplots were not necessary. It took away from the gravity, necessary for the main story.

The production house made a decision not to communicate with the survivors’ organizations or the families of the brave people the story is inspired by. A shame, as they would have learned that the incredible courage they celebrate, taking place over a few hours, has been mirrored across the city each day over four decades in the simple act of surviving in impossible personal circumstances and still caring for others in pain, having been abandoned by all those holding a duty of care.

Calcutta High Court Criticises IIT and Investigative Agency for Lack of Progress in IITian Faizan Ahmed Murder Case

Kolkata: In a case involving the brutal murder of a genius student inside one of India’s top educational institutes, the Calcutta High Court expressed its displeasure with the progress report from the investigation agency. In the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed’s murder case, the court came heavily on the investigation agency as well as on the IIT authorities.

The court of Justice Jay Sengupta also expressed shock at the delay in examining students. The court was informed that IIT authorities told the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that after November 25th when examinations will be over they can talk to the students, to which Justice Sengupta reacted, “Examinations will come and go, but a person has been killed…” The Justice saw the SIT officer with a blank face and mentioned, “In no criminal case, it happens.”

At one point, Justice Sengupta said that if there will be so much delay in the investigation, what will happen to the evidence? He added that if the IIT is deliberately delaying then the court will have to address it.

In the two-page order, Justice Sengupta not only mentioned the petitioner side counsel’s claim that professional help was taken to commit the crime but also pointed out that the investigative agency ‘acceded’ to the request of the IIT Authorities to interrogate the students after a particular date.

IITian Faizan Ahmed case so far

On October 14, 2022, the partially decomposed body of 23-year-old Faizan Ahmed was recovered in the hostel of IIT Kharagpur. When parents reached IIT KGP, they were informed by the IIT authorities as well as Kharagpur police that the third-year student committed suicide. The parents Rehana and Salim Ahmed protested it. After the postmortem, neither the police nor IIT authorities could provide any satisfactory answers to the grieving family regarding the cause of the death. No poisonous substance was found in the body and there was no hanging mark on his neck either. The family moved to Calcutta High Court. Here also, police claimed that Faizan committed suicide but could not cite the reason for it. The court of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha appointed retired forensic expert Ajoy Gupta, who after going through video clippings of the postmortem found haemorrhage signs and requested a fresh postmortem. The court agreed to it.

The second autopsy was conducted in Calcutta Medical College and for that, the body of Faizan, who was buried in Dibrugarh, was brought here after exhumation. The fresh report made it clear that Faizan Ahmed, one of the brightest students of IIT KGP and a member of two Aerial Robotics Research teams, was killed inside the campus. The court of Justice Mantha mentioned that it is a case of homicide. He constituted a three-member SIT led by senior IPS officer Jayaraman to investigate further.

Both the Bengal government and IIT KGP moved to the division bench against the order. However, the division bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmai Bhattacharyya upheld the single bench’s order, stating that the case will be further probed based on the findings of the second autopsy only, and the SIT will continue its investigation. The division bench removed two members of the SIT and gave the choice to the lead officer to build his team.

Court’s remarks for investigative agency and IIT authorities

On Wednesday, Justice Sengupta started its order with the sentence, “Investigation into the offences is not being done properly. This is despite the fact that it has come to light that professional help was sought to commit the crime. Till now the investigating agency has not even been able to name anyone as an accused.”

It also read, “Let a proper report be filed by the investigating agency on the next date indicating in detail the steps they had taken after taking over the investigation as a Special Investigating Team from 13.9.2023. Let them indicate what steps they have been taken on and from 13.9.2023 to 18.11.2023. It is an imperative to have the report on investigation made available on record so that one can proceed towards the final hearing of the case. The investigating team shall also produce the case diary on the next date of hearing.”

“It appears that the investigating agency has acceded to the request of the IIT Authorities to interrogate the students after a particular date. In these circumstances, the IIT authorities should also exercise some patience to allow the investigating agency to delve into the matter a little further so that the final hearing of the case can take place effectively. Ideally, it should not be an adversarial litigation for the IIT authorities. After all, one of their students had died.”

“List this matter for further hearing on 18.12.2023 under the heading ‘Specially Fixed Matters’ at 3 PM,” the order added.

Mother’s demand

Faizan’s counsel, Ranajit Chatterjee, has been repeatedly arguing that IIT is intentionally delaying the investigation as it will give time to the suspected students to fly out of the country and then the case will become meaningful. He told eNewsroom after the hearing, “The Court did not hide its displeasure at the lack of progress of the investigation as also the fact that the SIT felt it was required to re-examine the involved students at their convenience at the dictate of IIT.”

Faizan’s mother Rehana Ahmed told eNewsroom, over the phone from Tinsukia, “The non-progress in the report so far makes us more suspicious that IIT is delaying the investigation. In this situation, SIT should inform the authorities that suspected students should not leave the campus, before their meeting. The court should also intervene and direct the SIT in this regard,” a worried mother seeking justice appealed to the court.

Madhya Pradesh Enigma: Surge in Women Voter Turnout, Yet Decline in Chief Minister and Former CM’s Strongholds

Bhopal: Both the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress believe that a 2% rise in women voting will go in their favour because of the Ladli Behna (ongoing) and Nari Samman Yojana (announced by the Congress) during the 2023 Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh.

A day after voting, both the BJP and the Congress reiterated their claims to win the elections following the release of final figures that stood at a record 77.2%. And more because more women had stepped out to vote.

In 2018, 74.03% of women had stepped out to vote, this time it’s 76.03%, there is a 2% rise in women voting in the 2023 Assembly elections, said an Election Commission official.

The trend has, however, brought a surprise and much-needed respite to both the political parties who have made the assembly election to be women-centric in several ways.

Throughout the elections, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister kept his hopes high to turn the election in BJP’s favour with the ‘Ladli Behna’ scheme under which Rs. 1,250 per month will be provided by the state government as financial assistance to around 13 million women from poor families.

The Congress too made it a women-centric election, by promising Nari Samman Yojana to raise the amount to Rs. 1,500 per month, if voted to power.

The BJP-Congress women-centric promises were not able to infuse enough enthusiasm among the women voters in the constituencies of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath.

Today, voters participated in the festival of democracy with full enthusiasm, which is commendable, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told media persons after the end of polling on the voting day on November 17. Ladli Behnas have created history by coming out in large numbers and supporting BJP, he claimed and added, “I salute them. This affection of yours energises and inspires me to work more for the welfare of sisters”.

The Congress too thought of striking a similar goal. State Congress chief and former chief minister believes the higher women turnout is a referendum against the BJP government due to the State topping the country in crimes against women and unbridled price rises.

In her public meetings, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had said, that women understand that the Ladli Behna scheme was rolled out just before elections and won’t be swayed by it.

The statistics speak volumes. In the Budhni Assembly segment, from where Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is contesting, Male voters showed more enthusiasm as compared to women voters. Statistically, in the constituency, 82.77% of women and 86.80% of male voters have voted.

The Chhindwara Assembly segment, where former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath is the party’s candidate, reported 82.62% male and 80.92% women voters this time, according to the Election Commission.

A proportionate spike in voting by women in constituencies, where big players are contesting, went missing.

In Indore – 1 constituency, where BJP National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, one of the party heavyweights who has been roped in by the central leadership, reported voting by 73.69% men and 70.82% women.

Women voters in the Dimani constituency seem to be cautious, where Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, seen as a potential CM candidate, is the party’s candidate. The assembly segment reported voting by 71.90% males and 67.29% women. In the Narsinghpur Assembly segment, where Union Minister Prahlad Patel is contesting, polling was reported as 84.65% for males and 81.45% for females.

Union ministers Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Patel and general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya – have been harbouring the ambition to become chief minister for a long time.

The assembly segments where former state president Rakesh Singh and BJP MP Ganesh are contesting did not witness as many women voters compared to men. In the Jabalpur https://weddingcelebrantfrance.com/welcome/ Paschim Assembly segment where Rakesh Singh is contesting, voting was recorded as 72.91% for males and 70.32% for females. The Satna Assembly segment where BJP MP Ganesh Singh is contesting witnessed 72.64& men voters and 71.14% women voters.

There’s more. In the last assembly elections, there were 44 constituencies where more women voted than men. This time, the number is 34.

The voter sex ratio (number of female voters per 1000 male voters) has shot up – 917 in the 2018 assembly election, 918 in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls to 945 in the 2023 Assembly election.

In 2018, 10 assembly segments reported more female voters as compared to males, yet more women voters voted than men in 51 of the 230 assembly constituencies in the State. This time, there are 29 assembly constituencies with more women voters than men, yet more women voted in 34 assembly segments.

Women voters are increasingly going to play a greater role in some of the key constituencies. One of them is the Churhat Assembly segment, from where Ajay Singh, former leader of the opposition and son of senior Congress leader late Arjun Singh is contesting. The segment witnessed polling by 66.64% male and 75.88% by women voters. The other key constituencies that recorded more women voting percentage are Niwas (81.97 % male & 82.22 female), where Union Minister Faggan Singh Kulaste and Sidhi (66.48% male & 72.89 female) where BJP MP Riti Pathak are contesting.

By tying itself deeply with women voters, the political parties have put the crucial election in a difficult situation in a State where 52,119 women in 2019, 52,357 in 2020 and 55,704 in 2021 went missing, indicating a concerning upward trend.

7 অক্টোবরের পর, ইসরায়েলি বাহিনীর বোমাবর্ষণ এবং অন্যান্য উপায়ে হামলায় 200 জন স্বাস্থ্যসেবা কর্মী এবং ডাক্তার সহ 12000 জনেরও বেশি লোক নিহত হয়েছিল। প্রতিবেদনে আরও বলা হয়েছে যে এ পর্যন্ত ফিলিস্তিনে ৩০টিরও বেশি হাসপাতালে বোমা হামলা হয়েছে।

র‌্যালি চলাকালীন স্বাস্থ্যসেবা পেশাদাররা, ইসরায়েলি সশস্ত্র বাহিনী দ্বারা লক্ষ্যবস্তু করা রোগী, ডাক্তার এবং স্বাস্থ্যসেবা ব্যবস্থার সমর্থনে বেরিয়ে এসে এনআরএস হাসপাতাল থেকে কলকাতা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে সংহতি প্রকাশ করেছিলেন।

কলকাতার সমাবেশটি সারা দেশে MSC আয়োজিত বেশ কয়েকটি সমাবেশের অংশ ছিল।

“গাজায় ইসরায়েলি বাহিনীর চলমান যুদ্ধাপরাধের বিষয়ে আমাদের উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করতে আমরা এই সমাবেশের আয়োজন করেছি। চিকিৎসক ও রোগীসহ স্বাস্থ্যসেবা ব্যবস্থার ওপর হামলা শোচনীয়। আমরা একটি সম্পূর্ণ যুদ্ধবিরতি এবং সেখানে সংঘটিত যুদ্ধাপরাধের অবসানের দাবি জানাই,” বলেন MSC পশ্চিমবঙ্গের রাজ্য সম্পাদক ডঃ বিপ্লব চন্দ্র, যখন তিনি তার সহকর্মী সদস্যদের সাথে হাঁটছিলেন।

এমএসসি সিসি-র সেক্রেটারি ডাঃ মৃদুল সরকার বলেন, “আমরা যা করতে পারি সেটাই সবচেয়ে কম। তিনি বলেন, একজন চিকিৎসক হিসেবে দায়িত্বরত চিকিৎসকদের হত্যা করা খুবই বেদনাদায়ক। গাজার আল-শিফায় হামলার বিষয়ে তিনি কী ভাবছেন জানতে চাইলে তিনি বলেন, “এখানে যা ঘটছে তা বেদনাদায়ক। ইসরায়েলের যুদ্ধাপরাধের সাক্ষী বিশ্ব। আল-শিফাকে হামাস মানব ঢাল হিসেবে ব্যবহার করেছে বলে দাবি করে ইসরায়েলি প্রচারণার খবর আমরা বিশ্বাস করতে পারছি না। তিনি তখন থেমে গিয়ে বললেন, “মনে রাখবেন, সাদ্দাম হোসেনকে আক্রমণ করার সময় মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র কীভাবে দাবি করেছিল যে ইরাকে গণবিধ্বংসী অস্ত্র রয়েছে এবং ধ্বংস করা দরকার। কিন্তু আবু গারেবে অপরাধ সংঘটিত হওয়ার কাহিনীর আবির্ভাব ঘটে। আমরা বিশ্বাস করি যে গাজায় যা ঘটছে তা তখনকার ঘটনার মতোই।”

চিকিত্সকরা জাতিসংঘের কাছে কেবলমাত্র সম্পূর্ণ যুদ্ধবিরতির দাবিই নয় বরং গাজায় চিকিত্সা সহায়তার প্রয়োজনে তাদের সেবা করার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করেছেন।

Stop genocide, bombing on hospitals: Kolkata doctors rally for Gaza

Kolkata: On Monday, doctors and healthcare staff Kolkata chose to hold a rally demanding an immediate ceasefire in Palestine. While, doctors hitting the streets might be a rare sight, the participating practitioners maintained that they had no option but to organise a rally to send out a loud message that the attack on healthcare infrastructure is an attack on humanity and that there should be an immediate ceasefire.

After October 7, more than 12000 people including 200 healthcare workers and doctors were killed in the bombardment and other ways of attacks by Israeli forces. Reports also suggest that so far more than 30 hospitals have been bombed in Palestine.

Protesting against the crime against humanity committed by Israel, the healthcare workers associated with the Kolkata chapter of the Medical Service Centre (MSC) rallied in Kolkata. Several doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals gathered with placards, posters and banners outside Neel Ratan Sarkar (NRS) Hospital to demand an immediate end to the numerous war crimes being committed in Gaza.

The healthcare professionals, during the rally, brought out in support of the patients, doctors and healthcare system that are being targeted by Israeli armed forces, walked in solidarity from the NRS Hospital to Calcutta Medical College Hospital.

The Kolkata rally was part of a number of rallies organised by MSC across the country.

“We have organised this rally to express our concern about the ongoing war crimes being committed by the Israeli forces in Gaza. The attack on the healthcare system including the doctors and patients is deplorable. We demand a complete ceasefire and an end to the war crimes being committed there,” said Dr Biplab Chandra, MSC West Bengal state secretary, as he walked along with his fellow members.

Adding to that Dr Anshuman Mitra said, “The dastardly attacks on patients, doctors, pregnant women and children need to come to an end. The constant bombardment of healthcare infrastructure is a violation of the UN Geneva Convention. Hence, we as doctors are here to condemn the war crime being committed by Israel in Palestine.”

The doctors and healthcare professionals congregated at the main gate of the hospital after the rally, raising concern over hospitals being targeted by the Israeli armed forces. They maintained that this was the least that they could do to protest against the constant attacks being made on Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure.

“This is the least that we can do,” said Dr Mridul Sarkar, Secretary, MSC CC. He maintained, “As a doctor, seeing fellow doctors being killed on duty is painful.” On being asked what he thought about the attack on Gaza’s Al-Shifa, he said, “What’s happening out there is painful. The world is a witness to the war crimes being committed by Israel. We just can’t believe the Israeli propaganda news claiming that Al-Shifa was used by Hamas as a human shield.” He then paused and said, “Remember, how the US while attacking and hounding Saddam Hussein had claimed that weapons of mass destruction were present in Iraq and needed to be destroyed. But what emerged were tales of crimes being committed in Abu Ghareb. We believe what’s going on in Gaza is similar to what happened back then.”

The doctors have written to the UN not just demanding a complete ceasefire but also expressing their desire to serve those in need of medical help in Gaza under its aegis.

Time Magazine, also reported that doctors in the United States have claimed that they will not be silent about what is happening in Gaza.

Team India ‘lost’ the world cup. Winning or losing are part of the game but what happens when the game becomes part of the political propaganda and the audiences are not sports lovers or cinema lovers but fans who hate others. A Bania paper in Uttar Pradesh gave a headline for the final game as ‘dharmyudh’. The game of cricket is being used for political purposes. As cricket is a powerful business in the country and every one non-playing ‘captains’ of the game earn a much bigger sum than the players.

There is not a single stadium in the name of any cricketing legend anywhere unlike the politicians and powerful leaders who might not have played cricket but dominated it. Bishan Singh Bedi opposed Feroz Shah Kotla ground in Delhi being named after Arun Jaitley but what happened. Bedi, the legend is thrown away from the game. Same thing happened again when legends like Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, two world cup winning captains, were not being invited to watch the game in Ahmedabad. Why? Perhaps, because, the board and its political masters were certain of Indian victory and hence nobody ‘else’ should be there on the podium to ‘greet’ the Indian team except for the ‘Supreme Leaders’, who must have been practicing to ‘deliver’ the ‘winning speech’ for days. Unfortunately, that did not happen as Team India got defeated.

As a team, this is a superb team which lost the game but won the heart of the people but the real defeat is of the Board of Cricket Control in India which has converted it into a political game. It is not a game. It is purely business and politics. I lost interest in the game once I saw players being ‘auctioned’ and the format of the game being changed to favour the batsman.

The biggest crisis of cricket was the demise of the West Indians’. They were unparalleled and a sheer joy to watch.

In India, the biggest upturn in cricket came after the historic victory of 1983 under Kapil Dev at the Lords. I still remember the excitement and joy it brought in our lives. For days, we did not forget it. It was just the transistor age and many of us had not even had the luxury to watch it on TV. After that investors came in and cricket became a big game. Kapil Dev was the player who changed it and brought cricket to non-English speaking people of the country. He was not an intellectual like Bishan Bedi nor sophisticated like Sunil Gavaskar, who could fit anywhere according to the requirement. Kapil always spoke from the heart and that is why he has always been straight forward and stood up for the rights of the players. Years later, the other man who changed the dynamics of cricket in India was Mahendra Singh Dhoni, emerging in from a relatively smaller town/city. After Kapil Dev, it was under Dhoni that India won the world cup. That was the time when we were growing and the rules of the games were still great.

As the new dispensation in India came in 2014, the game of cricket also changed a lot. More money came in but it also wanted players to sing and dance to the tone of the board. India had already hosted several world cup tournaments in the past but I think this was the worst. And the reasons are clear. Rather than thinking about India, the whole focus of the board of the cricket control in India (BCCI) was Gujarat and Gujarati Asmita as if other cities and states don’t have it or deserve it.

Whenever cricket is understood and history of cricket is written by any impartial person, the four to five cricket grounds always come to mind. The first and foremost remain Eden Gardens in Kolkata where players world over would love to play in front of a truly sports loving crowd. Have we seen how the first world cup win of Australia happened under Allan Border at Kolkata and how he was greeted by the stadium giving a standing ovation. Similarly, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Cheapak in Chennai, Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi and Karnataka Rajya cricket Stadium in Banglore had always been extremely welcoming to the international players and enjoyed the good game. After all, you go to watch a match to see a good game and not merely a win for your team.

In the last ten years, Gujarat has got unprecedented favour from every one. It got the maximum funding for ‘sports’ even when there is not even one player who could have gone to any international events like Asian Games, Olympics or elsewhere. States which have been sending players at the international events never get even half of the funds that Gujarat has got. Look at the world cup events. Ahmedabad was pampered so much that it was given the ‘prestigious’ match against Pakistan. Why? It is purely for monetary purposes because a match against Pakistan is still extremely a popular game in terms of business.

The crowd at Ahmedabad have been boorish to say the least. They don’t come to watch a game but purely brought for a political purpose. Frankly speaking, Ahmedabad never deserved the important matches of the world cup. The World Cup final should have happened in Kolkata or Mumbai, the two cities with incredible cricketing history but then how do you expect a cricket administration which has not even bothered to invite the two giants of our Cricket history who brought us the World Cup and gave us tremendous joy, Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to watch the match, to be fair towards other places for the purpose of World Cup Final. Can there be a bigger scandal than this as why was Ahmedabad given preference over Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai leave aside Delhi? The crowd forgot that they were watching the final of an international event and needed to be polite and appreciate the game.

It was sad to see the crowd behaving in such a filthy street level manner. They had not come to watch a game but wanted to celebrate a victory. Obviously, every Indian would love to have a world cup victory but then at the end of the day it is a game and once the game is over, the opposite team needs to be applauded and acknowledged. The crowd at Ahmedabad left the stadium before the Australian captain could be handed over the World Cup Trophy. This is not merely disgraceful but simply outrageous but then when you convert people into mindless frenzied crowds then such international embarrassment is bound to happen.

The Bania-Brahmin media in India has reduced us to a joke. It needs to educate people that it is a game and gamesmanship is the need of the hour. Respect players and enjoy the game. Winning and losing is not important but the prestige and honor of the country. This world cup, from the beginning had problems and it was looking like a tournament which was meant to make Indian win at all cost. The game was to be played by the players and the boards had a duty to provide space and environment.

The richest board of the world, suffers from megalomania and remain highly biased and prejudiced. Any cricket lover in India would give Kolkata, Bombay, Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi stadiums and crowds far above rating than over pampered Ahmedabad. It is time the administrators of cricket and other sports bodies think beyond their narrow political interest. Remember, Indian cricket team played like a champion team though got defeated in the final but that is the part of the game but the real defeat happened to those who wanted to reap political profit from India’s victory.

A country which ignore and disrespect its sporting icons for the sake of making the political masters happier will never be able to have sporting culture and sports persons of international class. Moreover, in cricket you might have the financial control, the other sports bodies too are watching your arrangements and a badly managed cricketing event might affect India’s chances to host other international events and tournaments. Stop political interference in sports bodies and allow sports persons and professional administrators to play a key role in it. The defeat at Ahmedabad is not of the Indian cricket but that of its political administrators who are lording over the body, minting money and destroying the gentlemen game.

India’s Third Largest City Embraces ‘Boycott of Israeli Products’

Kolkata: There is an old age proverb that what Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow, has been proven right once again. As in against the barbarism of Israel in Palestine, the call for a complete boycott of Israeli and American products has got an overwhelming response from Kolkata residents.

The Concerned Citizens of Kolkata, has initiated a week-long campaign called ‘7 Days 7 Products Boycott Movement’ starting from November 17 across the city. While there were protest rallies in many parts of the country against Israel’s atrocities, no city has run a campaign of fully boycotting Israeli-American products and do their part in pressing for ceasefire in Palestine.

“Within two days of the campaign’s launch, we have successfully reached a broad audience, including elders, children, and women. Additionally, shopkeepers are replacing products from Israeli and American companies,” reacted one of the group members.

Malay Tiwari, a social activist, claimed, “The boycott of Zionist companies’ products is already there, but what this call has done, is that it reminded the consumers that 100 % boycott of its products is the only way they can impact the ongoing genocide and play a role to bring ceasefire in it.” Malay was part of the team that had conducted a press conference on the eve of the beginning of the campaign.

During the press meeting, the group issued a statement too. It reads:

For 40 days, Israel’s barbaric actions have resulted in the deaths of more than 15,000 Palestinians, including 6,405 children. After the 7th October attack by Hamas, in a speech by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said in the UN general meeting, “Hamas attack did not happen in a vacuum. The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation.”

However, the attacks by Israel, purportedly in self-defence, targeted schools, hospitals, ambulances, refugee camps, mosques, churches, and civilians both inside homes and on roads.

Nearly all countries around the world are protesting against these war crimes committed by Israel and its allies, primarily the United States.

Hundreds of rallies have taken place in major cities worldwide to stop the war. Despite multiple appeals from the UN, Israel has not been deterred from bombing Gaza, the West Bank, and other areas of Palestine.

Right-thinking people are feeling helpless.

So to make people’s appeal more impactful, we the concerned citizens of Kolkata have decided to fully (100%) boycott Israeli and American products. We also include companies like Amazon, which are funding Israel.

The group members do not believe in violence, and as we are citizens of a country whose Founding Father Mahatma Gandhi believed in non-violence and protesting democratically, we have given a boycott call.

Boycotting Israeli-American products- The Campaign

The campaigning is being done using auto-rickshaws to make announcements, initiating street corner meetings, releasing videos of boycott calls made by prominent people of the society, distributing handbills, and putting roadside banners and stickers.

“People were already saddened and aggrieved by the large-scale war crimes committed by Israel and its allies against Palestinians. Feeling helpless about what to do, we reached out to them and reminded them to fully boycott Israeli-American products,” said Athar Firdausi, who also campaigned in many parts of the city.

Kolkata, the 3rd largest city in India, has an estimated population of 1.53 crore, while Bengal population is more than 10 crores.

“This is just the beginning, and in the next five days, we hope it will evolve into a movement. As large corporations see India as a market and its population as consumers, we aim to inform consumers that their money becomes blood money when they use these company’s products,” pointed out Tamal Chakraborty.

The group members also informed that, given the overwhelming response, they would launch another phase of the campaign in 21 days. The call will be given to boycott twenty-one products in the coming three weeks, extending the originally planned 15-day campaign.
