Cricket Gets All the Attention, But This Football Commentator Has Made His Mark on the World

2

In a nation whose heartbeat is cricket, a man fell in love with football, first saving goals and later entertained the fans with his velvety voice. Meet an international commentator and former football player from Delhi Ghaus Mohammad.

Mohammad did live commentary for football, hockey, boxing and volleyball.

In Football, the sky is limited for him as not only did Subrato and Durand Cup commentary for 25 years, but he also did live commentary in the final of the FIFA World Cup.

Hailing from Delhi, Mohammad is the first such commentator in the country, who did continuous commentary for 25 years in the Subroto and Durand Cups.

The Durand Cup is organized by the Indian Army and the Subroto is organized by the Indian Air Force.

He also played in the Durand Cup from Delhi for a couple of years.

“When I had gone to Guwahati for the Nationals in 1979, after watching me, the legendary athlete Milkha Singh invited me to come to Punjab Sports School, Jalandhar (a school run by Milkha Singh). But my mother did not agree to it,” the international commentator told eNewsroom.

Mohammed played football and wrote sports articles as a freelancer. One day sports producer RBN Mathur told him about the vacancy of a commentator on All India Radio. He could not speak in the audition for the first time. However, the duty officer of Akashvani Ravi Dutt Mahato noticed his talent and boosted his morale to try out for the audition again. Mohammed took part in the audition for the second time and cleared it. He has not looked back since then.

“In 1989, my mother was admitted to hospital. I was with her. There was the Durand Cup Final the next day. There was an income tax commissioner BP Ojha, who called me. He said he saw you and you can do commentary without much preparation, so I should do the final. But, I said, my mother is hospitalized, I can’t go. But my mother heard it and forced me to go. The final was between East and Mohun Bagan, the stadium was full. And my commentary was liked by everyone. I got calls from Kolkata too. From then onwards to 2016, I did Durand Final regularly.

In the 2005 Confederations Cup match between Brazil and Argentina, he did commentary in Hindi. In English, Subhash Bhowmik, who had played football from India, used to commentate with him. Later they became very good friends.

Mohammad did live commentary in the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The commentator, who happens to be a former Delhi goalkeeper, has an eye for the game and perfect diction. When the league match of the FIFA World Cup was happening, then Harsha Bhogle, who is now a big commentator in the cricket world, asked him, who will win the World Cup? Harsha and all the other commentators were shocked to hear that Mohammad had taken the name of Italy. But he also counted the reason, that the Italian players ‘tease’ the players of the opposition team, their ‘defence’ is very good and after scoring the goal, they do not allow the goal to be scored against their team till the end. His words were proved right when Italy teased in-form France player Zinedine Zidane so much that he ‘headbutted’ the Italian player and was sent off the match. Italy became the champion by defeating France.

After that, he commentated from the studio for FIFA in 2010, 2014 and again in 2018.

Mohammad does his commentary in Hindustani- a mixed language of Hindi, Urdu and English.

Apart from football, he also did commentary on hockey, volleyball and boxing.

Lal Bahadur Shastri Hockey, Nehru Hockey and Sanjay Gandhi like national level hockey tournaments.

When boxers Akhil and Vijender won medals in Beijing in 2008, Mohammad was the commentator.

“I have never worked as a commentator on cricket and tennis, which are seen and heard more in India. I used to think that there is nothing much to do about this. “Later my kids told me I should have done it,” Mohammad informed.

He has also been the youngest observer of the All India Football Association twice.

Star News, ABP News, NDTV TV, ESPN and many other channels, he has been a regular. Having done his commentary in many cities and countries in the country and abroad, 61-year-old Mohammad is currently OSD in Telangana Bhavan.

As a commentator, Mohammad got loved by a large number of people he met many big personalities got felicitated, however, never earned enough money to have his own house in a city like Delhi.

Cricket commentators get advertisements in the country, but for football commentators like Mohammad, if he gets a house in the national capital, it would be a major achievement in his life.

Manipur, Haryana and Shooting in Train

0

The country is witnessing horrific violence in different regions. The Manipur violence, going on for over three months as it has shamed the nation for the treatment meted out to the three young girls, it has led to the death of over one hundred innocent lives, (more Kuki) and also displacement of close to a lakh of people, more from Kuki-Naga-Zo communities, (Adivasis who are Christians in the main). The ethno-religious nature of the violence is writ large on the whole phenomenon. The inability, or complicity of the state to control the violence is very much there and the Prime Minister making a thirty seven second statement on the issue, not visiting the victims while visiting seven countries and travelling all over the country for election rallies and for receiving Awards is probably as shameful as the violence itself.

The violence as it has dominated the scene; was preceded by the spread of Hate against Kuki, Adivasis in particular. They were propagated as being infiltrators from Myanmar, growing opium and usurping the land. Two factors which can be culled out from this whole phenomenon is the manufacture of Hate against the major victims and the complicity or failure of the state.

The shooting by Chetan Singh in the train was frightening. His superior had refused to give him leave on one hand and his mind was full of hatred for Muslims on the other. He shot his superior constable and three Muslims, identified by their beard and clothes (‘the culprits can be identified by their dresses- Narendra Modi). Chetan Singh roamed in the train and sought the Muslim looking persons and shot them, while saying that this community is loyal to Pakistan, and if they want to live here in India they should chant “Yogi-Modi”. Some are claiming that he was mentally unstable, that seems to be either a failure of authorities to check as to who or being given weapons for protecting the railway passengers or is an alibi constructed for defense of the thoroughly communalized constable of Railway Reserve Force.

The shooting in the train, by a person thoroughly in the grip of Hate propaganda, so abundantly flowing in the society, generally unchecked and amplified by the Godi media and large section of other media is a mirror to our society and also reminds one of the killing of Bengali worker, a Muslim, Afrazul, by Shambhulal Regar, a shop owner, thoroughly influenced by the social media propaganda of Love Jihad. What one learns from these two episodes is the role of Hate spread in the society and abundantly used by the communal forces through various mechanisms.

The incidents of Nuh have twin logics inbuilt into it. The annual Yatra, Brijmandal Jalabhiskek Yatra with destination of Nalhar Mahadev Mandir, chose an interesting route. It did not pass through Hindu majority areas but chose the route where Muslims are more in number. The Mandir already had the presence of the VHP leader Surendra Jain, whose video is circulating; the Hate flowed abundantly in his speech just before the Yatra.

In addition Monu Manesar, the accused in the murder of Nasir and Junaid, who were killed and brutally burnt alive in a four wheeler, issued a video pronouncing his intention to join the Yatra and urging upon people to be there to welcome him. He is Chief of the Cow Protection cell of Bajrang Dal in the area. Due to murder of Nasir and Junaid, he is quite hated in the area. His video did act as a provocation. On similar lines, Bittu Bajrangi, another member of Cow vigilante group also issued a similar provocative video. It seems both were advised by VHP leaders not to join the procession.

The claims are that Muslim minorities attacked the procession and also the temple. The videos of the incident show that from within temple premises there was a shooting by vigilantes right in the presence of police force. Many in the procession were carrying arms, and preferred to pass through Muslim majority areas giving provocative slogans. Those who attacked the procession were also armed.

In the whole mayhem the police was either a bystander or looking the other way around as seen in one of the videos. The processionists also attacked a mosque, killing one Naib Imam. Early on Tuesday, two hundred strong Hindutva mob defied curfew and went on a rampage spree. They entered the Masjid at Sector 57 in Gurgaon and attacked the three people sleeping there. They stabbed Imam Hafiz Saad multiple times before setting fire to Masjid. “Hindu-Muslim baith ke khaye thaali mei Aisa Hindustan bana de ya Allah (Allah create a situation where Hindus and Muslims can eat in the same plate).”

The violence is spreading beyond the Nuh area to the NCR area. Citizens for Justice and Peace has complained to the DGP and NCM about the escalation of violence and urgent need to control it. Satyapal Malik, ex-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, very well commented on the tragedy of Nuh, “The whole country will burn like Manipur if these people are not contained,” he said. “Jats by culture or tradition believe in the Arya Samaj way of life and are not very religious in the traditional sense of the term. Neither are the Muslims of this area very traditional in their outlook. Therefore one has never heard of the two communities clashing in this manner ever since Independence. And these attacks will only increase in the run-up to 2024 as is evident in Manipur,” he said addressing a packed hall at the Constitution Club.

As VHP plans to take out many processions in the area, the Supreme Court in all its wisdom has hit the nail on the head when it urged the authorities to ensure that no violence or hate speeches take place in the protest marches being held by Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

We do need to combat hate; it has to be a sort of movement. What we need is a state police and other authorities totally sensitized to the values of pluralism and diversity. What we need is a state apparatus totally committed to Indian Nationalism and not to sectarian Nationalism.

Time for Supreme Court to take suo moto cognizance against Bulldozer ‘Injustice’

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Supreme Court must stop this bulldozer justice which has mostly been used against the Muslims by the BJP-ruled states. The narrative that BJP and its darbaris in the media are peddling every day needs to be understood carefully. Their politics is clear. They have made the word Muslim sound like criminals. The goons along with police then become ‘deshbhakts’ and enter into Muslim localities as if they are there to ‘protect India’ from Jehadis. Unfortunately, communalisation of the administration and law enforcing agencies is complete in many states. It may be true that there may not be orders regarding such things but how we function and work matters.

The police forces are in full swing during Kanwar Yatra. A Kanwariya is treated as a ‘freedom fighter’. It looks that Kanwar Yatra is a ‘great’ work of ‘nationalism’ and the police force is in sull sewa for them. In Uttarakhand, the police is focused on helping the ‘Chardham’ pilgrims. Its work is ‘exemplary’ . In such a scenario when a poor Muslim goes to the police station, the police will never treat them as citizens of the country but look down upon them as criminals and trouble makers.

It is good that Haryana police DGP has come out categorically that there has not been any cases of particular violence against women in the Nunh village or kidnapping among others. It is good that the people of Haryana have not heeded the calls of hatemongers. Jat, Gujjars, Rajput community leaders have come out categorically against violence and stood with the rule of law.

An impartial inquiry and rectification of the past mistakes is important but equally important is to follow the rule of law. In the last few years, political leaders of BJP have abused the rule of law process to target the minorities and the marginalised. Even Rahul Gandhi became a victim of it when the process was used to take his membership of the parliament.

The bulldozer justice should have no place in a country where we have independent institutions and judiciary. It means that the BJP has no respect for the judicial system and its own officers who are now serving it more than anything.

While people have no respect for targeting the goons and mafias, it is extremely painful to see the houses of poor people being bulldozed in the aftermath of the Nuh violence as if the shopkeepers are responsible for it. This is unacceptable. When will the police demolish the houses of those who give provocative speeches? Have police done anything similar to Komal Sharma, Kapil Mishra, Montu Manesar or even to Gurugram imam killers?

BJP must understand that many of its leaders face criminal conspiracy in the Ayodhya demolition case. They also were engaged during the anti Mandal violence. If the government those days had used the same trick, many leaders of the party would not have become Member of Parliament or even the Ministers.

I know the BJP will never do it because it wants to send a signal to its Bhakt how much it respects their rhetoric and lies. Now Kapil Mishra who instigated the mob in Delhi is the vice president of BJP. The party has found it useful to continue its agenda and has been ‘awarding’ all those who have created troubles. Montu Manaser is the future leader of BJP and he knows it well.

It is time for the Supreme Court to take suo moto cognizance of such demolition as happening in Mewat in the name of ‘instance‘ justice. We know in the name of arrest, it is the one sided arrest of Muslims. The media of Ambanis, Jains and Aggarwals will always use the term ‘rioters, dangai, rashtra virodhi’ in such a way that all the karyakartas know their netas or media is using this for Muslims. It is time for the courts to take notice of this and give necessary instruction to police and administration not to indulge in ‘instance justice’ but all the procedure of the law to take its own course.

Millennium City, which helps realise dream of millions sent back Hafiz Saad’s dead body home

0

Gurgaon (Gurugram)/Kolkata: A lover of naat (the poetry in praise of the prophet Muhammad), and believer of communal harmony of Hindu-Muslims, Hafiz Mohammad Saad was killed by a Hindutva mob had to leave for his home, Sitamarhi on the day, his dead body left for home.

22-year-old Hafiz Saad had come only 7 months back to Gurugram, also known as Gurgaon. Millennium City is known for being a tech hub of India and helping millions of Indians to realise their dreams.

Uski zindagi abhi shuru huyi thi, bachcha tha wo (his life had just begun, he was just a kid),” Shadab, the elder brother of Hafiz Saad, who was travelling with the dead body of his younger sibling broke down as he spoke to eNewsroom. When this journalist contacted Shadab, he was on the way to reach Sitamarhi, with the dead body of his younger brother.

Shadab, a tutor also lives in Gurgaon, one and a half kilometres away from the Anjum Mosque where his younger brother was doing Imamat and residing. “Kal ki hi ticket this uske ghar jaane ki aur 30 August ko wapsi ka ticket tha. Usey aaye huye saat mahine huye the Gurgaon. Aur in saat mahino mei uski kabhi kisi ke sath koi naittefaqi bhi nahi huyi thi [Yesterday (Tuesday) he had to go home. Saad had made a return ticket also on August 30. It has been seven months since he came to Gurgaon and during this period he did not have any misunderstanding with anyone],” informed Shadab.

The 250-300 strong Hindutva mob not only fired bullets inside the mosque but later set it blazed too.

The Imam of Anjum Mosque Shahnawaz informed, “The mosque was 25 years old and we had won a case in the Supreme Court recently. We had the plan to construct it further from August.”

Do you believe the killing of a deputy Imam and setting ablaze of Anjuman Mosque is a larger conspiracy?

“It could not be ruled out,” he added.

After the killing of Hafiz Saad, one of the naat Hindu-Muslim baith ke khaye ek thali mei, aisa Hindustan bana de ya Allah, (Ya Allah, the day comes when Hindu and Muslim eat from one plate) is viral now.

Hafiz Saad has studied in Chattarpur, Mehrauli and Darul Uloom Deoband.

“Saad was a positive thinker, he believed in humanity and communal harmony and loved to recite naats,” said Shadab.

On Wednesday, Hafiz Saad will be buried in Sitamarhi after Zohar prayers.

The brother informed them that they have registered an FIR in this regard at Sector- 56 police station. Did he get contacted by any politicians, or higher officials after the incident?

“No, we are only getting phone calls from journalists. No one else contacted us. The only thing the police said is that they have arrested ten people in this connection. But there was a mob of 250-300 rioters, it is not enough,” he said in anguish.

What do you want, any demand from the government? “I want that the killers to be hanged,” the brother added.

Significantly, even after two major incidents, one the attack on the Jaipur-Mumbai train, in which four innocent Muslims were gunned down by a terrorist Chetan Singh, other the attack on a Mosque leading to the killing of Hafiz Saad, no major politicians except Sitaram Yechury of CPIM and Asaduddin Owaisi of AIMIM condemned such horrific act of terrorism. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted about the hate and divisive climate but no specific mention of the two incidents.

We are sharing a bank account of Hafiz Saad’s mother, if anyone wants to support the grieving family.

Chronology: How Muslim Passengers Were Gunned Down By Terrorist Chetan Singh

0

After shooting his senior Tika Ram Meena, RPF constable Chetan Singh killed three other travellers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express train. The most significant part was, that all three deceased were not only in three different locations, but having beard, appearance wise, they all were visibly Muslims.

Well-known fact-checker Mohammed Zubair choronoligies the incident, especially the killing of three innocent Muslim passengers. It becomes more important to highlight it, as many news channels, basically the Godi media, (lapdog media) of India are claiming that killer Chetan Singh is mentally unstable.

The Alt News founder tweeted:

All three passengers Chetan Singh shot dead were Muslims with beards.

1. Chetan Singh went to three different coaches (B-5, PC, S-6) where he shot his senior Tika Ram and three bearded Muslim passengers.

2. Pic 2: At coach B-5, Chetan Singh armed with an automatic assault rifle shot from point-blank range at Abdul Kaderbhai Bhanpurwala (60) and his senior ASI Tikaram Meena (57).

3. Pic 3: After killing these two men in coach B-5, Chetan Singh crossed four other coaches from B-4 to B-1, leaving passengers in these compartments untouched before entering the pantry car where he shot dead a passenger who was identified as Sadar Mohammed Hussain.

4. Pic 4: From the pantry car, Chetan Singh then crossed two other coaches, S-8 and S-7, again leaving the passengers in them unscathed, before stopping at S-6. There, he trained his gun on another passenger Asghar Abbas Ali (35) and shot him dead.

After shooting Asghar Abbas Ali at S-6, Chetan Singh began a hate-filled rant against Muslims. “… Pakistan se operate hue ye, aur media yehi coverage dikha rahi hai, unko sab pata chal raha hai ye kya kar rahe hain… Agar vote dena hai, agar Hindustan mein rehna hai to mai kehta hoon, Modi aur Yogi, ye do hain.. (They operate from Pakistan, and the media is showing this coverage, they all know what they are doing… If you want to vote, if you want to live in India, then I say Modi and Yogi, these are the two)..”

There was a terror attack on the Jaipur-Mumbai train on Monday morning.

There is information that another victim of Chetan Singh’s bullet has succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as Syed Saifullah. AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi tweeted about it.

Ravish Writes: You cannot change the content of ‘Godi media’ with just business skills and money

0

“Trust in Modi was not born out of newspaper headlines or through shining faces on TV. I have given my life, every moment, for the people of this country.”

This is what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said about himself in February when the opposition demanded answers over the Hindenburg report and Gautam Adani.

Perhaps the prime minister’s conceit would contain a modicum of truth if the media had questioned his silence and he had answered. Instead, we have the recent example of both Modi and the media’s silence on Manipur. We have his speech during the Hindenburg crisis, when he told the Lok Sabha, “Will the 80 crore countrymen who get free ration ever trust those making false allegations?”

In a single speech, the PM shook off all demands for accountability.

Importantly, for the last 10 years, ‘Godi media’ anchors have been in the PM’s service, casting journalism in the gutter in the process. Yet the same PM said he owes them nothing. This is the boast of a leader who did not hold a single press conference in nine years, a leader who was not questioned by ‘Godi media’ for nine years.

It’s impossible to take the media out of Modi, and Modi out of the media. These sections of the media remain silent towards him. If they speak, they speak only for him. When a social worker or journalist gets respect in foreign countries, they call it an “anti-India” conspiracy. But the PM gets respect in the same countries, they describe it as India’s name – Modi’s name – ringing across the globe.

The decade of 2014 to 2024 belongs as much to ‘Godi media’ as it does to Modi. These channels have different names but the same content. The packaging is poor, their stories are similar, and they’ve broken many myths in the process.

‘No money’ no longer an excuse

Prior to 2014, we believed TV journalism was haunted by the ghost of no money. News channel owners, who usually weren’t journalists, were running out of funds and the business model was flawed. Everything was done in the hope of gaining TRPs; the alternative was shutting down the channel entirely.

These owners didn’t care about journalism. Even ‘helpless’ owners of established channels would follow this, otherwise they wouldn’t get advertisements. That’s how a myth was created from the market itself for this poor content.

And now, this myth has been busted. The new owners of Big Media are Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. Adani is launching several news channels this year, Ambani already owns many channels. Given the volume of channels and the money they both have between them, the ghost – a lack of funds – that haunted the media until now must run away.

But why aren’t we seeing the effect of these funds on content? Why aren’t their wealth and business acumen improving the poor state of TV journalism, especially when these expenses are lower than their other businesses? What examples have Ambani and Adani’s channels set in journalism? What have they done that’s new – or even spectacular?

These are my questions, and the answers are simple.

There are two essential and basic conditions for good journalism: courage and questioning. Without courage, you cannot question. Without questions, courage has no meaning.

So, you cannot change the content of ‘Godi media’ with just business skills and money – you need courage and you need to question. Instead, Ambani and Adani join the queue that already includes Aroon PurieSubhash ChandraJagdish Chandra ‘Kaatil’, and Rajat Sharma. A queue where everyone is timid.

This is the biggest change in the mainstream media over the last 10 years. Their content isn’t influenced by the owners, it’s influenced by the ‘unknown owner’ of these owners. We cannot expect these channels to ask questions like The Telegraph. Merely opening a channel doesn’t make one a journalist. The content of these channels tells us about the relationship they have with the Modi government. If journalists protest in Delhi against attacks on their peers, take a look at how many journalists from these channels are in attendance.

I do not consider The WireCaravanScrollNewslaundryAlt NewsNewsClickThe News MinuteBoomlive and Article 14 as alternatives to the mainstream media. That line of thinking frees the mainstream media from guilt. These institutions should be seen as individual efforts. Their names should not be brought up during the ‘Godi media’ debate by claiming they are also of this era. Because they aren’t – the government doesn’t give them ads. Corporate ads are rarely available. They aren’t the startups helped by the government.

What we should care about is the media houses that get crores of public money in the form of ads. Why aren’t they practising journalism? When journalism is not possible, then why are India’s richest opening channels?

The two richest industrialists in the world have thrown their money at ‘Godi media’. The inference is there’s a market for it, that it’s good business. But there is no pleasure of making a product from the heart. Let me ask you this: Why didn’t young, educated people from startup incubators think of a media startup? It’s because they know they cannot create free content in the media.

But ‘Godi media’ has developed such a model – it runs in the name of journalism but its product has no connection to journalism.

During the NDTV takeover, Gautam Adani had said India “does not have one single [outlet] to compare to Financial Times or Al Jazeera”. He had said something along the lines that there is no dearth of money for this.

But he doesn’t know journalism isn’t driven by money. Also this is the same Financial Times that Adani demanded to take down a report on his empire’s “offshore funding”. Financial Times declined, saying it stood by its reporting.

Many global media houses are made of such courage. But in India, channel owners buy expensive cars but will not post reporters in different countries. They won’t even send their reporters to other states, let alone abroad. Adani wants to create a global media brand, and Modi would like that too, but look at what happened to Doordarshan. In nearly 10 years of Modi’s India, it’s flush with resources and is actively playing the ‘Godi media’ game. (See hereherehere and here.)

Outliving a purpose

The ‘Godi media’ factory does not produce questions for the government. It manufactures weapons to target those who do ask questions – calling them traitors or terrorists.

But the public is more aware now. Viewership is dropping. People are learning that ‘Godi media’ may position itself as patriotic, but it’s not actually good for the country. Social media accounts are dedicated to monitoring hate speech in the media. The media is a watchdog but the public is watching it instead. The sustained criticism of the media in the Modi decade is unlike any other.

At a glance, the scene seems to be changing. Old faces are switching from one channel to the other, new channels are launching with brand-new faces. But they’re repackaged versions of the same product, all performing the same task. It’s like mafia movies from the golden days of cinema: an old gang leader is eliminated but a new one soon takes his place. The empire continues.

Yet credibility is so low that ministers are giving interviews to social media influencers – a throwback to the time when Modi permitted Akshay Kumar to interview him in 2019. They wouldn’t have to if Adani and Ambani’s channels and anchors had built credibility themselves. Modi clearly needs a new ‘Godi media’.

We should remember the opposition took too long to understand the power wielded by Modi’s media. It finally happened when Rahul Gandhi, during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, established his press conferences as an alternative to these news channels. He challenged journalists saying ‘you cannot ask this question to the PM, but you can ask me’. They did ask him – and he answered.

Of course, ‘Godi media’ all but ignored Rahul’s yatra. Now that the yatra is over, Rahul doesn’t mention ‘Godi media’ as much in his speeches. And while he showed some courage, Congress governments are now giving their ads to these channels, despite their treatment of their leader. Imagine the irony: Modi’s ministers are flocking towards influencers while Congress governments are turning to ‘Godi media’ with ads.

Meanwhile, the end of journalism is being celebrated.

Mohammed Rafi: Bharat’s Eternal Ratna

1

The brilliance of genius lies in simplicity. And one artist who personified this maxim in the world of music was none other than the legendary Mohammed Rafi since he rendered the most intricate phrases and imponderable patterns of music with immaculate simplicity and grace. If even forty-three years after his demise, the love and adoration for him has not dimmed and his voice rules the airwaves, it is because Rafi Sahab, as he is fondly addressed by millions, did supreme justice to every facet of singing, making a colossal contribution to film as well as non-film music.

The relentless outpourings of appreciation on every social media platform from YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp to radio stations, television channels, magazines and newspapers confirm his eminent and eternal stature at the pinnacle. Four decades plus, the deafening applause for Rafi Sahab’s singing talent as well as humanism has still not subsided and continues to cut across barriers of land, language, race, religion and nationalities because he provided sublime pleasure with his immeasurable genius. To even speak in the past tense about Rafi Sahab is quite unjustified as his voice is omnipresent and none till date has been able to bridge his profound absence.

Generations have been captivated by his gigantic prowess of playback singing but the fact is that the magic of Rafi Sahab’s non-film creations have made an equally heartwarming impact upon the listening fraternity. If his awe-inspiring dexterity took film music to Himalayan heights of ecstasy, Mohd Rafi’s harmonious sheen provided dignity and stature to non-film compositions also. Connoisseurs know Indian music recording companies had several famous film singers on their contracted rosters, but the stature and respect for non-film artists grew only because of Rafi since his non-film renditions of songs-ghazals and bhajans brought in phenomenal revenues and sales.

Never allowing his market price to come in the way of creativity, the humble man collaborated and encouraged new composers as frequently as he worked with established musicians. Charging as little as one Rupee for his work, Rafi helped many newcomers like Shyam Sagar, Vinod Chatterji, Babul, Shyam Sharma and Taj Ahmed Khan to establish themselves alongside noted veterans like Hansraj Behl, Iqbal Quereshi, Khayyam and Jaidev. Several years ago, a senior executive of HMV, Mr MC Lilakar confided to me that no male or female singer had given as many non-film chartbusters as Rafi did for decades. In fact, Rafi Sahab paved the way for non-film singers like Chandan Das, Jagjit Singh, Pankaj Udhaas and Nazia Hussain to gain money and fame though here too, like the film world, he swept aside all opposition.

The reason is not too difficult to fathom. After all, who has got over the delight of Rafi’s non-film songs/ghazals like Mere Geeton Ka Singaar Ho TumKya Yaad Tumhein Bhi AaayengeDo Ghadi Baitho Tumhara Roop Aankhon Mein BasalonTum Aao Runjhun Karti and Tum Saamne Baithee Raho, Main Geet Gaaon Pyaar Ke. Recorded almost six decades back, their melodic magnetism has not dimmed one bit and they are equivalent to any film song for their ethereal feel and fragrance.

Do remember these songs were recorded on shoestring budgets with a meagre number of musicians, yet their allure is mesmeric in terms of melodic unity and charm. Although many well-known playback singers, male and female, did join the non-film bandwagon, yet none scaled the dizzying heights of popularity like Rafi. Some stellar singers did manage a few hits in some specific genre but their overall non-film repertoire is poor in number as well as quality. In contrast, Rafi Sahab’s non-film ventures were best-sellers since, as music director Khayyam once confided, “Rafi was a devout student of music who contributed excellence to every creation”. No wonder, Khayyam’s non-film album This is Mohammed Rafi remained the best-selling disc on account of Rafi’s soft and tender vocals as the Sangam of the magnificent ‘teacher’ and the gifted ‘student’ resulted in a mesmerising creation of bhajans and ghazals that are still heard with delight and awe.

No listener can deny that they have heard anyone except Rafi Sahab rendering bhajans better than Paon Padun Tore ShyaamTere Bharose Hai NandlalaMain Gwalo Rakhwaalo Maiyya or More Shyaam, Pal Pal More Mukh Se Nikle Nis Din Tero Naam. Each inflexion is so pure, so soothing and dripping with devotion that it is akin to Nirvana and legendary singer’s devotional plea of Paon Padun Tore Shyaam is so sublime and perfect that even agnostics are led to admit Rafi as God’s Own Voice.

If poets like Madhukar Rajasthani, Saba Afghani, Krishan Adeeb or Muzaffar Shahjahanpuri were brought to the limelight by Rafi, the intoxicating couplets of Daag, Mir, Ghalib and others were brought alive by Rafi’s golden inflexions. Listen to ghazals and nazms like Ghazab Kiya Tere Vaade PeYe Naa Thi Hamari KismatShauk Har Rang PeDiya Ye Dil Agar Usko Bashar Hai Kya KahiyeFalsafe Ishq Mein Pesh Aaye Sawalon Ki Tarah and Kya Tumne Dil Liya Nahin Mera Jawaab Do that have all the ornamentation and intricacies rendered in a unique manner by the incomparable singer. The best ghazal singers are put to shade by subtle inflexions and vocal twists of the humble singer who spoke softly in real life but ‘roared’ on mike.

A noble singer, Rafi Sahab always gave his best, irrespective of whether the composition was for film, radio or stage. Music Director Ravi, who early in his career recorded Rafi for All India Radio for a pittance, once recounted that Rafi’s singing contribution would always be a hundred percent irrespective of the amount of remuneration or the genre; a genuine reason why Rafi Sahab’s film and non-film creations are equally popular and alive till this day. Old timers still swoon to the 1949 Rafi-Hansraj Behl-Rajendra Krishan composition Iss Dil Se Teri Yaad Bhulaayee Nahin Jaati which actually started the avalanche of non-film songs. They fondly recollect that it was Rafi’s non-film patriotic numbers like Watan Ki Abroo Khatrey Mein Hai and Awaaz Do Hum Ek Hain, penned by Sahir and Jaan Nisar Akhtar under Khayyam’s baton, that stirred the nation’s conscience during the war in 1962.

Recorded and released within a week after the China attack, these Rafi songs galvanized the Indian public to come forth in a manner that has never been seen before. Khayyam recounted to me that the songs were hurriedly written, composed and recorded in a matter of two days but “Rafi Sahab was cooperation personified at every stage of the creation.” Charging no money for his divine vocals, Rafi Sahab put such a ‘soul feel’ into the songs that they still inspire a ‘noble and pious form of patriotism’ within everyone’s breast. Thespian Dilip Kumar said Rafi was the favourite of Indian soldiers but then, he was and has been the favourite of everyone across the seas.

This humane singer may not have been accorded the Bharat Ratna Award, nevertheless, since decades, billions have been hailing Rafi Sahab as the greatest ‘Ratna’ or jewel of Indian music. And the overwhelming public sentiment is a pointer that the genius of this colossal artist is above all awards.
