Bengal will stand united to keep India united: Mamata Banerjee

0

Kolkata: Hitting the streets of Kolkata against National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the third consecutive day, on Wednesday, with slogans like ‘United Bengal for United India’, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that every citizen of Bengal will stand united to keep India united.

“Every Renaissance started from Bengal and then other states adopted and followed the footprints of Bengal. This time too Bengal will show the path to others in shunning down Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC which are two sides of the same coin. Bengal will never be broken on communal lines. Every citizen of Bengal will stand united to keep India united,” declared Banerjee.

The Bengal chief minister began her padayatra from Howrah Maidan after urging her supporters to maintain peace during the march.  The third day of the rally also crossed iconic Howrah Bridge.

Banerjee raised questions over Aadhaar Card which was made mandatory by the BJP government. She asked that if Aadhaar card is not strong enough to prove one’s citizenship then why did the BJP government made it compulsory immediately after coming to power in 2014.

“BJP is now saying that the Aadhaar Card is not valid proof for one’s citizenship, but they are forgetting that they had only made it compulsory. The entire country is burning and the Union Home Ministry must retain peace and harmony across the country but instead, it is adding fuel to the fire. When Babri Masjid was demolished the entire country saw a series of violence breaking across the country. The central government can once again be seen inciting people to spread violence across the country,” reiterated Trinamool Congress  supremo.

Regaining more confidence after winning all the three assembly seats in Kharagpur, Karimpur and Kaliagunj in the recently concluded by-polls, Banerjee chanted fresh slogans against CAA and NRC and invited every common man in the state to join her ‘peaceful’ protest rallies that are being organised in the city.

TMC chief, during the rally also announced that she would be addressing two more gatherings against the CAA and the NRC on Thursday at Rani Rashmoni Road and Park Circus Maidan on Friday.

“CAA and NRC will have to be withdrawn. TMC will not allow the BJP to conduct divisive politics in Bengal. We will also not allow any detention camp to be built in our state. No one will have to leave Bengal and India,” said Banerjee.

People of India should fight the battle against NRC, like Netaji fought the independence war: Left Front student unions

0

Kolkata: After civil society and Trinamool Congress, twelve Left-wing student unions hit the streets of Kolkata on Tuesday to protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The students not only held torch march but also chanted slogans in favour of Muslims and their citizenship rights.

Earlier, students of Presidency University had protested before the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Kolkata office, during which they held sections of the Constitution, implying that BJP leaders should first read India Constitution.

Talking to eNewsroom, Bablu Roy of SFI said that every Muslim residing in India has the right to be called Indians and enjoy the benefits like any other citizens.

“The colour of the blood is red. It doesn’t change with religion, caste, and creed. BJP leaders think that their blood is saffron so they are different from every other human being. But they should immediately stop their unlawful policies that they are forcefully implementing as they have the majority,” added Roy.

Chanting slogans in favour of the minorities, Krishanu Ghosh of PSU said Bengal has always been a heaven for every community and that the saffron camp just to hide their misgovernance and hence is trying to divert the attention of the common people.

“The government officials whoever comes to check out documents will be shunned by us. We won’t allow anyone to enter our house. The torch we are carrying today is the symbol that we will burn everyone who tries to take away our citizenship. The BJP government knows that they won’t be re-elected again so they are forcefully implementing their unlawful policies. Prime minister Narendra Modi and his close aide Union Home Minister is behaving like Adolf Hitler, but they are forgetting the power of unity of the common people,” reiterated Ghosh.

The rally started from Esplanade and ended at Sealdah station, turned into a huge gathering. Addressing to the crowd, Indrajit Lahiri of SFI stated that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose believed in freedom by hook or by crook and after 72 years of Independence, the people of Bengal should lead other states in defeating tyrant BJP government the way Netaji had shown.

“Peace can be regained after we fight a situation. By mere protest rallies, NRC cannot be stopped. Everyone should be ready to fight the tyrant government to regain freedom. BJP leaders say Bharat Mata ki Jai, but they don’t work anything to uplift the status of the country. BJP government slams other political parties but they, themselves are not addressing serious issues like growing unemployment, price rises, and shutdown of several industries. Instead, they are playing vote bank politics to secure their position. But their ignorance on the serious issues will lead to their downfall,” said Lahiri also adding that the Left Front and it’s allied parties are ready to fight back every situation to ensure the safety of common people in the state and also across the country.

At a time when the Bengal BJP is taking out rallies celebrating the passing of CAB in the parliament, all other political parties from most of the states are taking out protest rallies condemning the act of implementation of NRC in India.

Speaking on the recent attack on the students by police in Jamia Milia University, an SFI leader (who didn’t want to be named) said that all the students across the country should come out on streets to mark protest against the barbaric and inhuman act of the BJP controlled police in the national capital.

Soon Chief Ministers of BJP ruled state will say no to NRC: Mamata

0

Kolkata: Urging people of West Bengal to reject Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on the second day of her protest rally urged people of West Bengal to wear badges and prepare flexes to declare NRC rejection.

“I will not allow the communal political party BJP to break the peace of Bengal. Everyone should wear badges with slogans against the NRC and CAB written on it, so that BJP leaders and ministers get a clear indication of Bengal being against the two. After few days the BJP cadres and leaders themselves will run for their life as CAB and NRC is completely unconstitutional. BJP can only implement NRC in Bengal over my dead body,” said Banerjee.

Referring to the final list of NRC in Assam, the TMC supremo said though the BJP speaks in favour of the Hindus, but in Assam almost 13 lakhs Bengali Hindus are still in detention camps.

“The saffron camp speaks of the well being of the Hindus but in Assam almost 13 lakhs Hindus are in detention camp out of which several have even committed suicide. In Bengal almost 30 common citizens have committed suicide fearing the NRC. Despite staying in this country for several years now the saffron camp is asking us to prove our citizenship by submitting documents, no one should cooperate with them,” urged the chief minister.

Banerjee also alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of destroying the economy of the country and just to hide their incapability of running the country they are trying to make NRC an important issue so that people don’t question their inabilities.

“Modi government’s inability is making prices of necessary commodities soar higher with every passing day. With prices of onion touching INR 200, GDP of the country has completely crashed. RBI has also said that they cannot guarantee an amount less than one lakh. BJP government implemented demonetization to punish people who kept cash at home and now that people deposited their money in bank the saffron camp is not ensuring its safety,” reiterated Banerjee.

Condemning the violence at the Jamia Milia University where the students were brutally beaten up by the police, Banerjee said that a day will come when the students will start a bigger protest against the BJP government.

“There is no end to the conspiracies of BJP. If anyone comes across such fire, douse them immediately. There is no place for tension and anarchy in Bengal. We will hit the streets more often but will not encourage road and rail blockades and all should ensure free movement of the people of the state. Once I was alone. But now chief ministers of Delhi, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Punjab and Kerala are also in my favour and have strictly opposed implementation of NRC in their states. Soon the chief ministers of BJP ruled states will also not support NRC,” added Banerjee.

No one will be ousted from the state as the ruling TMC government believes in coexistence of all religions, caste and creed- Mamata

0

Kolkata: Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday hit the streets to protest against  Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and implementation of National Register for Citizens (NRC) in Bengal.

Garlanding the statue of BR Ambedkar at Central Kolkata at the start of the protest march, Banerjee said that BJP cadres in disguise are spreading unnecessary tension and violence in the state.

“Bengal is the perfect example of communal peace and brotherhood and BJP is purposely trying to create communal tension in the state.  In Bengal, I will not allow implementation of NRC. And the government will not tolerate any sort of violence or unlawful act. No one will be ousted from the state as the ruling TMC government believes in coexistence of all religions, caste and creed,” stated Banerjee.

Reading out an oath to thousands who had gathered in the rally, Banerjee urged people from all community to stay united and protest against the CAA and NRC in a peaceful way.

Further attacking Narendra Modi led BJP government, TMC supremo said that the BJP’s politics to shun everyone and to rule the country alone.

“The BJP wants to throw everyone out. Their politics is that they will only stay in India. Their motto they claim is Saab Ka Saath, Saab Ka Vikaas, but if the citizens are not allowed to stay in the country for whom will they work for,” claimed Banerjee.

At the beginning of the rally at Red road, Banerjee instructed her partymen to spread across the rally to ensure peace and safety of everyone.

“BJP has the tendency to disrupt peace. So my party cadres will spread across the protest walk to ensure that no BJP cadres can disrupt our protest march. Together we will make and stay in peaceful Bengal,” mentioned Banerjee.

For three consecutive days, Banerjee, who has been at the forefront in opposing the NRC and the citizenship law, will conduct mega rallies crisscrossing the city and neighbouring Howrah to protest against the law.

Echoing Mamata Banerjee, Jamanuddin Farroqi said that the BJP is intentionally conducting violence in the state to malign people from the minority community.

“Since last Friday we have seen violent protests and vandalism of public properties. The protest had also left several common people severely injured. Everyone is seeing that those who had conducted the violent protest are from minority community. The saffron camp is purposely doing this just to malign us and show reasons to oust us from the country,” said Farroqi.

Subhashini Talukdar, a homemaker who joined the protest march from MG Road said that she voluntarily joined the protest just to march her angst against the central government’s recent policies.

“The freedom fighters have won Independence from the British. Thousand of them had even lost their lives just to free our motherland. Most of the freedom fighters are from Bengal. Another war of Independence is about to start and this too will be begin from Bengal. It is very unfortunate that this time we will have to fight against Indians who are ready to sell the country to foreign hands,” said Talukdar.

Banerjee also mentioned that so far she was protesting against NRC alone but now chief minister of other states are also opposing the implementation of NRC.

“Once I was alone. But now Delhi’s chief minister said that he won’t be allowing implementation of NRC. Chief Minister’s of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Punjab and Kerala are also in my favour and have strictly opposed implementation of NRC in their states,” reiterated Banerjee.

The first day of the rally culminated at Jorasankho, the house of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. According to political observers, the chief minister had chosen the starting and the end point of the rally very wisely just to give a message of ‘saving constitution’ and ‘communal peace’.

“BR Ambedkar is said to be the father of the constitution. The first day of the rally started from his statue. Tagore is said to be the epitome of communal peace. The rally culminated near his residence. Through the starting and ending point Banerjee wanted to tell everyone that the ruling Trinamool Congress believes in protecting and abiding the constitution and also in communal peace and brotherhood,” said an observer.

Meanwhile, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar alleged that the rallies conducted by the chief minister are ‘unconstitutional and inflammatory act’. Dhakhar has also urged the chief minister to devote her time to retrieve the grim situation.

Bangla Pokkho calls for non-cooperation movement to fight back BJP’s atrocities

0

Kolkata: At a time when the entire state is burning under several political furores over National Register for Citizenship (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Bangla Pokkho, a non-governmental organisation hit the streets to protest against the implementation of NRC in West Bengal.

At Hazra More, Probir Roy, a member of Bangla Pokkho said that the BJP unlawfully had passed CAB in the parliament to break the unity of Hindus and Muslims.

“No matter how much the BJP tries to break the backbone of the two communities they will fail in accomplishing their dreams. BJP is the most undemocratic party and the Bengalis are ready to fight back the atrocities of the saffron camp,” said Roy.

Kaushik Maity, another member of the organization said Bengal will not be broken along religious lines. If needed we will hit the streets more often to ensure security for the minorities in the state.

“Citizenship Amendment Bill is a farce. After coming to power with a huge majority now the BJP is not bothered about the common people. The BJP is claiming that they are a party for the Hindus but the truth is even the Hindus will be heckled if NRC is implemented in the country. Aged people cannot show the identity proof even if they are Hindus, they will be detained in the detention camp,” stated Maity.

He also said that those Bengalis whose ancestors are from West Bengal but has no birth certificate will also be deprived of citizenship.

“Muslims, who are in West Bengal generation after generation has every right to be called Indian. Hindu Bengalis those are ‘Ghotis’, whose ancestors are from West Bengal will also be deprived along with those who came in West Bengal after the partition of Bengal. It is time that calls for Hindus and Muslims to stand united together,” mentioned Maity.

Khisti Paramanik of Bangla Pokkho mentioned that all the members of the organization are ready to fight back the BJP and also that if necessary they are prepared to shed blood to buy freedom from BJP.

“After the British, it is time to win back our freedom again but from the communal party called BJP. The members of Bangla Pokkho are ready to shed blood and die if necessary. We will not show any documents to BJP and RSS cadres. Both NRC and CAB are baseless and are anti-Bengal and Bengalis. So, no Bengalis should cooperate with the BJP. Bengal and India are our motherland and no one can take away that right from any Bengalis be it Hindu or Muslim,” said Paramanik.

Call for NRC reminds us of the hardship we faced in 1956 – Bengali intellects

0

Kolkata: “If leaders and ministers of BJP are human beings then they should immediately decline their idea of implementing NRC across the country,  said poet Subodh Sarkar Addressing a press conference at Kolkata Press Club, on Saturday.

Intellectuals from the city also claimed that chief minister Mamata Banerjee has the potential to restrict the BJP and RSS leaders from implementing NRC in Bengal.

Bengali Intelligentsia against NRC

“Chief Minister’s from six states are now being vocal against the implantation of NRC in their states. But Mamata Banerjee is the only chief minister who had shown courage to speak against NRC in the national capital. BJP’s main target is Bengal but they are forgetting that those Muslims who stay in Bengal are also Indian citizens since the partition of Bengal,” mentioned Sarkar.

Sarkar also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are not aware that the common people of the country even those voted BJP to power is going against the saffron camp due to the Central’s government’s inhuman acts and policies.

Speaking about Hindu-Muslim unity, writer Abdul Basar mentioned that though the Hindus and Muslims are divided by religion but are united by culture and humanity.

“Politics and power doesn’t mean violence. The two religions can have different traits to reach the almighty but culturally both are united. Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam are the perfect examples of unity between the two religions. Muslims at least in Bengal are so worried that they are even shaving off their beards. RSS and the BJP cannot go on for long by their divisive politics,” said Basar.

Basar added that the intellectuals from Bengal should hit the streets more often so as to mount pressure of the saffron camp and also to give the BJP a clear message that the citizens of Bengal will not fall into their trap.

Taking a potshot at the BJP government, poet and singer Pratul Mukherjee said that saffron camp follows the ideologies of Adolf Hitler. “Rabindranath Tagore in the original song from which the Indian National anthem is taken clearly states that people from all religions including Muslims have the right to stay in India as they are also the bonafied citizens of this country. RSS follows that song but overhears the word Muslims for which they are putting up their ante against a particular community. Mass agitation is needed across the country and Bengal should lead it. On one side the BJP is keeping the saints in front on the other side they are killing them again by not abiding their teachings,” added Mukherjee.

Poet-writer Nrishingha Prasad Bhaduri said that people those who had to come and reside at this side of Bengal from Bangladesh had to face tough time and also that these people including him are having nightmares due to the inhuman policy of the BJP led central government.

“In 1956 I had spent sleepless nights at Sealdah station along with my mother. This inhuman policy of BJP is reminding me of those days and we all are having nightmares. But pelting stones at trains and setting buses on fire is not the correct way to stop the implementation of NRC but we have to protest so that the BJP cannot do much over the NRC issue. The BJP speaks a lot about freedom movement but none of the BJP leaders have ever shed blood for India’s freedom movement,” claimed Bhadhuri.

Moderating the press conference painter Suvaprassannna said that no one from Bengal should worry about NRC as Mamata Banerjee will not allow implementation of the same in Bengal. Singer Kabir Suman, who was unable to attend the programme had sent a note stating that he will not cooperate with the BJP cadres and leaders and will not submit any papers or documents to prove his nationality and loyalty towards the country.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had urged from the common people to maintain peace and harmony in the state and not to resort to violence and disturb public tranquility and peace.

“It must be kept in mind that police stations, railway stations, airports, post offices, government offices, public transport and likes are public property. Vandalising public as well as private property in any form will not be tolerated and will strictly be dealt according to law. We are opposed to CAB and NRC. However, we are against any sort of violence and disruption. We urge all to protest against CAB and NRC through democratic means,” said Banerjee.

Unlike today, back in 2012, media was not as organised and hostile as it is now- Kavita

0

Kolkata: Sitting at the CPIML’s modest office in Kolkata’s Creek Row, Kavita Krishnan seemed to be in sync with not just the pace of the city but also the political scenario in Bengal. In, fluent Bengali, she spoke to her comrades, seeking dopes about the opposition. In an exclusive interview with eNewsroom at Kolkata’s CPIML office, Kavita talks about women rights, India’s rape culture, Hyderabad encounter, CAB, NRC and the reluctant media of India today, following are the excerpts of the conversation that transpired:

eNewsroom: You were the face of the movement for justice in Delhi Nirbhaya gang-rape case. From 2012 to 2019, has there been any change with respect to women getting justice in such a case?

Kavita: As a woman right activist, the biggest challenge that we face, is from the police, who seem reluctant to even register case, especially if the girl is alive. It’s like – mari to nahi hai na. See, the Hyderabad case is a perfect example of their least bothered attitude. Had they sprung into action the moment the girl’s family approached them seeking their help to trace the girl, who knows, she would have been alive. And now by encountering the rapist, the police seem to have done an easy cover-up for themselves.

eNewsroom: What’s your take on the recent encounter of those accused in the Hyderabad rape case?

Kavita: We are shocked at the custodial killing – fake encounter in which the accused have been killed.  Also, the news of the alleged accused rapists accepting their crime was floated by the police. Where is the evidence? Why they were not produced before the court? Is someone being protected? These are the questions that need to be answered. We are not living in andher nagri, that just because a noose has been made, which doesn’t fit the accused’s neck, we find someone whose neck fits it. We need to get out of this lynch-mob mentality.

eNewsroom: What do you feel about the police doing their job in rape cases?

Kavita: More than doing their work, we have observed the police often misuse their powers. Today, we are applauding them for killing the rapists, but we need to understand that police many a time use their powers against women. Remember, how the Chattisgarh police had raped a 15-year-old tribal girl and killed her. Imphal also has seen the men in uniform raping women and killing them. In both the case, justice has not been delivered.

eNewsroom: Incidents of rape are high in the country. But public outrage is seen only in cases like that or Nibhaya and Hyderabad case. Why?

Kavita: On the contrary, I would say that the public in each rape case gets disturbed. It is the media, who build this pressure, amplify the voice the mass. They did so, in Nirbhaya’s case and also in the Hyderabad case. But the media outrage is selective. They choose to highlight stories which are gruesome and not those in which the girl is alive or cruelty is less. Unlike today, back in 2012, media was not as organised and hostile as it is now. As for the public, I can say from my experience of having led the Nirbhaya public protests. The interactions that I had with them back then were a clear indicator that they don’t want any rapes to take place.

eNewsroom: What do you think about the Unnao case?

Kavita: It is a bad example. How many will come forward to register a case when they are violated? Not many will come forward after seeing the police inaction in cases where the accused is influential. Media bias can be seen in such cases.

We need to understand that a lot needs to be done to create a safe environment for women. Proper street light and public transport can cut down rape percentage in India.

eNewsroom: Coming to Unnao, a BJP leader is the key accused in this case. There are many BJP leaders and religious heads who are accused in several rape cases. But not much is being done in such cases?

Kavita: We have seen BJP protecting the accused if they are affiliated or have any affiliation with the party. Just see the Unnao case, the accused Kuldeep Singh Senger is a BJP leader and a state where encounter has become a norm, it’s CM Ajay Singh Bhist is doing nothing. Is a sant supposed to think or act in this way?

In Asifa’s case too, nothing happened. The accused were upper caste people. Sadly enough, religion and caste play an important role in getting justice in India.

eNewsroom: What about rape threats on social media? You, yourself have received quite a few?

Kavita: They are celeb trolls, as they are followed by the honourable Prime Minister of our country. But what can we expect from the followers of leaders who openly declare that women will become demons if they go out to work or that women need to be controlled by men? Mind you, these were statements made by BJP’s star campaigner Ajay Singh Bisht. They are not bothered about women security, all that matters to them is stoking the Hindu-Muslim divide

eNewsroom: Coming to that, the present scenario, where people are on the streets, protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act. What’s your stand?

Kavita: This is a deliberate measure to create confusion among the people. People are not understanding, even for Hindus, before being given citizenship, they will first have to prove their citizenship. The primary target, as its evident are the non-Hindu.

As we have seen in Assam, it will be the women who will be affected. This is a ploy to divide the population on religious ground, which is similar to the British policy of divide and rule. The common man knows little about CAA or NRC. We need to do enough groundwork.

eNewsroom: What will be the combined effect of CAA-NRC?

Kavita: India is facing a huge economic crisis. The combined implementation of these two will help in creating an exploitable workforce. I fear that those left outside the ambit of citizenship will be colonised or enslaved to work at lower pay. These undocumented people will be used to work in inhuman condition.

eNewsroom: Do you think this a strategy of the ruling party in the national interest?

Kavita: This is a desperate attempt being made by the BJP to stay in power. It not being done in the interest of the nation. As a nation, we all know how weak we are in the documentation, and this government is asking for legacy paper. A country where the so-called leaders have no documents they expect the poor and the marginalised people where education is less, to prove their citizenship by providing documents.

eNewsroom: Bengal will be the first few states where these laws will be implemented. Comments please….

Kavita: Bengal is continuously being targeted by this government. But I find this state more aware of these laws than the other states, where the public is clueless about the repercussions of these bills or laws. I can see an anti-NRC, anti-CAB, anti-NPR movement-building in Bengal. And I think they might be leading this movement once it becomes a national movement.

eNewsroom: Who will be the allies in this movement?

Kavita: This will be a people’s movement, of which political parties with secular ideology can be part. But the media will have to wake up and be the voice of the public. The opposition will need to unite. If we fail to stop these laws from being enacted, it will be unforgivable.

Mamata Banerjee says that she won’t have NRC and CAA implemented in Bengal, but I hear that four detention centres for foreigners are coming up. Let me be clear, detention centres are unacceptable. They are the modern version of concentration camps of the Nazis. If she is anti-NRC then she needs to shut these camps and lobby other alternatives of having a work permit to the immigrants after having identified.

eNewsroom: Why detention centres shouldn’t be welcomed in a country like India?

Kavita: See, the government is banking on people to not understand the fact that the government will be using our (tax-payer) money to have ourselves harassed. We need to understand that these detention centres are being made from our money and later our money will be used to keep them in those centres. Also, government has already wasted INR 1600 crore to have NRC implemented in Assam, which they have now cancelled as it didn’t meet their agenda of secluding Muslims in the state. Hence an attempt to cover up their failure.

Amit Shah starts his Jharkhand election speech from Ram Temple and ends with accusing Congress doing Hindu-Muslim politics

Giridih: On the last day of the campaigning for the fourth phase of Jharkhand Assembly polls, Home Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party National President Amit Shah while mentioning Ayodhya Verdict, said, “Humney Abhi-Abhi Supreme Court Mein Ram Janambhoomi Ka Faisla Suna Diya (We have just now delivered the verdict on Ram Janmabhoomi in Supreme Court ).” The statement, however, neither completely sounded like, we just did it nor like the Supreme Court delivered the verdict.

Jharkhand election is the first major election taking place after Ayodhya verdict was delivered. And as expected BJP leaders are trying to take credit of the Supreme Court verdict, which has ordered the construction of a Ram Temple at Ayodhya. BJP President Amit Shah, in his first election rally in Jharkhand, stated that a grand temple would be built at Ayodhya. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) complained to Election Commission that BJP taking the credit of Ram Mandi temple construction when the decision is that of the Supreme Court.

However, today, Amit Shah began his speech with the Ayodhya verdict, stating that the matter was pending for about 100 years and as Narendra Modi was elected as Prime Minister for the second time, he helped court deliver the verdict fast.

Following, in his trademark style, he asked the gathering whether they want a grand temple or not?

Significantly, while Shah highlighted and began his speech with how during Modi’s regime Ayodhya Verdict was delivered, towards the end of his hour-long speech claimed, that the Congress party of indulging in Hindu-Muslim politics for years, spreading Naxalism and riots. By saving terrorism (terrorists), Congress does politics of vote bank, not BJP.”

On Citizenship Amendment Bill he said, “We brought Citizenship Amendment Bill but Congress is saying it is against Muslim. You (Congress) have the habit of saying such things. Whatever we do, they (Congress) say it is against Muslim. Citizenship Amendment Bill is not against Muslims.”

He also alleged, “Congress is behind the burning of Northeast, and from here I am assuring the Northeast people that their culture, linguistic, and political right will be safe under Modi regime.”

“Yesterday Meghalaya’s Chief Minister and other ministers met me and demanded for some changes (in CAA). I said there is no issue in it. Meet me next time and we will do something for Meghalaya,” said the Home Minister. And then added, “They (Northeast people) do not have anything to fear.”

Ironically, the Home Minister in his entire speech was seen attacking the Congress, when in Giridih, the It is the JMM candidate Sudivya Kumar Sonu who is contesting against BJP’s Nirbhay Shahabadi.

Interestingly, President of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), which a BJP ally in Bihar, Chirag Paswan too held a rally only two kilometres away from the site where Shah was addressing the BJP rally. Paswan junior was seen asking people to vote for his party candidate Upendra Sharma, who is also contesting against Shahabadi, the BJP candidate.

Kolkata: The fight over National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizen Amendment Bill (CAB) issue took a volatile turn on Thursday when the protesting students of Presidency University took to streets to submit a copy of Indian constitution to the state BJP headquarters in Central Kolkata.

Ayan, a Biology student of the university claimed that the purpose to submitting the copy to the BJP office was to remind the BJP leaders that not only Hindus even Muslims have equal rights to reside in India.

“The Constitution clearly states ‘We the people of India’. This proves that India is a secular country and people of all faiths have equal right to reside here. But the BJP led Central government has forgotten our own constitution. There anti-Muslim agenda is ruining the democracy of the country,” said Ayan.

Kaberi Guha, another protesting student alleged that saffron camp is an ‘anti-national party’ and also that the BJP is keen on destroying the harmony of the country.

“Abiding the constitution the saffron camp was voted to power. Soon after coming to power the BJP is disrupting the harmony of the country. The Constitution clearly mentions that every citizens of India is entitled to enjoy all the facilities of the country but due to the appeasement politics the BJP is apparently giving freedom to the Hindus just to keep their vote bank,” said Guha.

The police who had barricaded the street near IISWBM College Street campus found it difficult to manage the crowd as the BJP cadres chanting slogans in favour of NRC came from the other side of the road. The police had even restricted the saffron cadres’ movement to so as to avoid untoward incidents.

But verbal slugfest continued as the BJP cadres’ called the Presi students ‘anti-nationals’ and chanted ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogans. Countering the ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogan the agitating students chanted slogans criticising the BJP government.

Talking to eNewsroom, BJP media- in charge Saptarshi Chowdhury said that the agitating students are naxals and are not students.

“First the students should prove that they are genuine students. They are Left cadres if not Naxals. Chanting slogans in favour of Ram is our tradition and no one can stop us to work for the development of the country,” said Chowdhury.

BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha said that no matter who hit the streets, BJP will make India ‘illegal infiltrators free country’.

“Hitting the streets and abusing BJP will not help anyone. We have pledged to develop the country and will clean India and will throw out all the illegal immigrants from the country. The Infiltrators are enjoying the benefits due for the original citizens of the country.

The local book shop owners in College Streets however stood by the agitating students and few of them have even mentioned that the saffron camp in order to find out the illegal immigrants is also destroying the peace of genuine citizens of the country and also that the BJP should rethink before implementing the NRC in West Bengal.

“History says that the Bengal once had two sides, East and the West. After partition of Bengal several Hindu and Mulims from now Bangladesh had fled to India. They are genuine people and they shouldn’t be harmed,” said a shopkeeper.
