How on three occassions, Mallikarjun Kharge missed the chance to become chief minister

0

There are tons of memories and of course, it’s hard to figure out where to start. So this is going to be random and rambly, but I hope it will be useful to kind of get an idea of the man behind the public figure that Mallikarjun Kharge is.

I’m not going into the debate of ‘is he the man who can take on the BJP or resurrect Congress’ because that is not the point of this exercise. I just want to acknowledge a man who has definitely always been the best choice and has always not got what he wanted or what he deserved due to obvious reasons as well as circumstances.

The son of a mill worker who just kept rising: that’s what we can publicly see. He was Congres state president and a very effective opposition leader. Knowledgeable on the floor of the house and off it. He is also very funny and bitingly sarcastic, when he can relax and chat.

I remember one occasion when the late ND Shivakumar and I were on an election tour in Gulbarga and we got to ride in his car with him through the dust and heat. He held us enthralled for a good two hours with reminiscences of various political incidents from Karnataka history, his youth and how things were in the olden days. Shivu told me afterwards: “I never knew he could be that friendly and tell us such inside stories with so much warmth.” Yes and I agree, Shivu.

The other occasion I recall where he surprised people was when he came for a Times event and had all our senior staff in splits with his very witty jokes. He made no fuss about attending the event, waited patiently for all other participants to turn up, held the stage and upstaged everyone present (including other senior politicians), because he was relaxed and in full flow that day. I remember people telling me “we never knew he was so funny and had such conversation capabilities! We never see this?”. Yes, true.

Always, always, Kharge sahebru has chosen his words very carefully. He has been very conscious of the impact on his image and also on his people, so he never says anything that has not been precisely reasoned out. It is not easy being a Dalit leader through the eras that he has seen and it is still not easy being a Dalit leader today. His plus has been that he knows the grassroots pulse and has been as shrewd as Deve Gowdru in assessing it and harnessing it.

In my mind, it’s an absolute tragedy that he never got to be chief minister. A senior journo once told me: “Karnataka will never allow it” and I was horrified to hear that. But turned out I am the idealist dreamer and the senior journo whom I was furious with for saying that was actually correct. Why, oh why is not merit and ability the only criterion for leadership? Yes, I hear all the anti-reservation bunch sitting up and taking note of my point here, but has it struck anyone that “reservation” actually works both ways? And prevents really “samartha” people from the Dalit communities from reaching real posts of power?

In the first round, Kharge sahebru lost out to SMK, who came from nowhere, took out a Panchajanya yatra (that Kharge also organized) and took the chief minister’s post. What about the 5 years of battling with Deve Gowda and J H Patel that Kharge did as leader of the opposition, so very efficiently? Ah well, when the CM had to be decided, it was SMK as party prez at the last minute and not the man who fought the Janata Parivar for 5 years. And this was a decision that Sonia Ji took.

Round two was the Congress-JDS govt where Siddaramaiah was deputy chief minister. “Set dose” as Dharam Singh-Kharge-HK Patil were called at that time stood strong. Kharge stayed silent when his pal Dharam Singh was favoured and given the job. And soldiered on for the party, as always.

And round three was the face-off with Siddaramaiah. This was at least an election in the Congress Legislature Party. And since the 2013 election was basically a Siddarmaiah show, this was the one where Kharge had the least right to be bitter. But Kharge was the actual Congress leader, Siddaramaiah was the incoming one. And it was, even in his head, the last chance he had at getting to the post. And it was the one rare occasion where he showed me his despair at having lost the post.

To my mind, he would’ve been a really strong and efficient CM. He has always been a quiet worker, though he can deliver good oratory whenever it is needed. He researches as much as Siddaramaiah or Deve Gowda. He knows all the details of every single thing he speaks about. He has a great deal of administrative experience and has a firm hand dealing with partymen, bureaucracy and the public. There is really no one who does not have respect for him.

But, he has never pushed himself forward or pushed anyone else down. He is not a man to wear his heart on his sleeve. And so, he is often just taken for granted.

I am glad that, for whatever reason and in whatever circumstances, he has at least been the de facto opposition leader in Lok Sabha and has now been given the topmost position in his party. Yes, people will say puppet and etc, but he will do his best and he will do it in his own quiet way. He did and does deserve way more and I am not satisfied with the rewards his political diligence and life have given him. But knowing Kharge sahebru, he will say: “Yen agot nodan bidri“. And quote a shyer.

Unnecessary Hijab ban debate is going on in Supreme Court: Ashok Ganguly

Kolkata: Former Supreme Court Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly has said that the hijab ban debate going on in the Supreme Court is unnecessary and that the ban on hijab in educational institutions is undemocratic and unconstitutional.

The former SC judge was commenting on the ongoing hijab ban controversy, especially the ban in educational institutions, while he was addressing a function in Kolkata recently.

Without mincing words, he said, ”India is a secular country. Here, the Constitution provides equal rights to people of all religions and languages. However, in recent times, some evil forces are trying to destroy the cultural atmosphere of the country.”

Recently, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court has given a split verdict on the hijab ban order by the Karnataka High Court, which has directly impacted the school education of scores of Muslim schoolgirls in Karnataka.

In the two-judge bench, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia of the apex court set aside the hijab ban by the Karnataka HC, while Justice Hemant Gupta agreed with the decision and dismissed 26 appeals filed against the high court judgment.

Justice Dhulia said in his judgment: By asking the girls to take off their hijab before they enter the school gates, is first an invasion of their privacy, then it is an attack on their dignity, and then ultimately it is a denial to them of secular education. These are clearly violative of Article 19(1)(a), Article 21 and Article 25(1) of the Constitution of India.
Indeed, Ganguly asserted that he agrees with the judgment of Sudhanshu Dhulia that the hijab ban is undemocratic and unconstitutional.

Justice Ganguly said, ”This is an unnecessary ban which is being debated in the Supreme Court. I strongly support the views which have been expressed by Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia that the ban is undemocratic and unconstitutional.”

On October 16, the Calcutta Khilafat Committee organised a student felicitation event, in which, along with Ganguly, other dignitaries were also present, including Dr Sashi Panja, Minister of Women and Child Development in West Bengal, Minority Affairs Minister Md Ghulam Rabbani, minister Javed Ahmed Khan, ex-Member of Parliament, Ahmed Hasan, and Dr NK Chakraborty, Vice-Chancellor of NUJS.

The former justice discussed various aspects of education in his insightful and strong speech. He said, ”People should be aware of society’s moral values, patriotism and democracy.”

Ganguly, who has been the chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission, compared the ban on hijab as similar to taking away the constitutional rights of Indian citizens. He categorically stated, ”The Constitution of the country has given the right of religion and culture to everyone, but some people are trying to take it away. No State can exist without the expression to preserve the constitutional principles. Everybody must have noted that when a government comes to power, the State has to take an oath to obey the principles of the Constitution, The oath of honesty and discharging public duty. And in a manner which inspires confidence in the minds of everybody, not only those who are represented in your party but even those who are opposite of you, who are criticizing you, because it’s a republic.”

The former judge, who has been seen on the streets joining peaceful demonstrations and marching for the assertion of the fundamental rights of Indian citizens, said he will always raise his voice in support of the right to personal liberty. ”I have participated in a march in support of the person’s right to wear a hijab. I believe that it is my duty as a former judge to uphold the principles of the Constitution.”

The judge also recalled his teaching days. ”I started my career as a school teacher and I believe that teaching is the most honoured position. Unless you have good teachers, you can’t build a nation. You can object and rise against the injustice that is the essence of education.”

”You must preserve the character of the republic. Everybody has a right to rethink and express their views freely. These are the tenets our Constitution preaches,” he told the students, and others present at the event.

Why Sourav Ganguly is being deprived, let him contest ICC election: Mamata Banerjee

0

Kolkata: The departure of former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly from the post of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President has taken a political turn.

Today, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the former skipper was being denied a second term as BCCI president. She appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to let the former Team India captain contest the International Cricket Council’s election.

Soon after her allegation, Congress’ Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Suvendu Adhikari attacked her for doing politics on the issue.

Mamata Banerjee told newsmen on Monday, “My humble request to the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) that Saurav (Ganguly) must be allowed to contest the ICC election. Why is he being deprived? What is his fault?”

She continued, “Everybody knows him, across the country and the world. We are proud of him, he is a Bengali brother, Dada. And the world knows him. But he is proud for country and the world. Whoever plays cricket, everybody knows him. Everyone knows him, he works with everyone. He is popular, that is why he is being deprived. I am really shocked.”

The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC)’s chairperson added, “Do not take it politically and vindictively. Take a decision. He is not a political person. Take decisions for cricket and sports.”

The left-hand batsman and one of the finest cricketers of Indian cricket history Ganguly was made BCCI president in 2019. His term has just ended. The former captain did not fight for a second term. While the BCCI secretary Jay Shah and few others like Rajeev Shukla will continue, Ganguly will be replaced by Roger Binny, a member of 1983 World Cup Champion team.

Leader of Opposition in Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari attacked Mamata Banerjee, “She should first remove Shahrukh Khan and make Saurav Ganguly the Brand Ambassador of West Bengal. Why has she realized his (Saurav Ganguly’s) greatness so late? She should not do politics over this.”

The Bollywood superstar was made Bengal’s Brand Ambassador in 2012, a year after TMC came to power in the state.

Adhikari claimed, “She should know that the prime minister does not intervene in cricket administration.”

While Adhir Ranjan reacted, why did Mamata Banerjee take so much time to react to it?

Congress MP said, “May be she realized that the issue is important for the people of Bengal. We all want Sourav to be appointed BCCI president.”

CPC Congress Sends Strong Signals To India

While presenting a detailed report on the achievements and transformation of the country in the last five years at the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, the General Secretary emphasized the importance of the People’s Liberation Army. Xi Jinping informed the gathering of 2,296 delegates at the Great Hall of the People about the feats of the Chinese Army.

He emphasized the future role of the army and claimed that the PLA should be modern, agile and able to win wars.

Xi Jinping informed the CPC delegates that he is committed to modernising the once infantry-dominated military by 2027. He also claimed that to achieve that goal, the People’s Liberation Army has undergone tremendous organizational changes and hardware upgrades. The General Secretary informed the CPC delegates that the ground force has been trimmed, while other services including the navy and rocket force have gained prominence.

He said, “We will intensify military training under combat conditions across the board to see that our armed forces can fight. We will innovate new military strategic guidance and develop strategies and tactics for people’s war, establish a strong system of strategic deterrence, increase the proportion of new domain forces with new combat capabilities, and intensify military training under combat conditions.”

But there was more in the store and it is very important and equally dangerous for India. While Xi Jinping was talking about these achievements of the army, a video was shown to the delegates.

The video contained the visuals of the clash that had taken place between the Indian and the Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.

As many as 38 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the skirmishes that took place in the Galwan Valley. The PLA and the Chinese MEA confirmed the incident and admitted that Chinese soldiers were killed in the incident, though they refused to divulge the number.

Besides, Qi Fabao, the regimental commander of the PLA, involved in the skirmishes with the Indian Army was given an important place at the Congress. He was sitting in the row just behind Xi Jinping. He was one of the 304 delegates from the PLA and People’s Armed Police chosen to attend the all-important meeting of the party. Before this, Qi Fabao was awarded the title of the Hero Regimental Commander. Not only this, Fabao was chosen by Beijing as the torch-bearer of the Winter Olympics Games held in China last year.

But these are only the tip of the iceberg. China has been accused of violating a number of agreements signed with India after 1993. The two countries signed deals to maintain peace and tranquillity along the Line Of Actual Control. An agreement was signed between the two countries in 1996 that made it mandatory for both of them to inform each other before making any movement involving more than 5,000 troops.

Under the Border Defence Cooperation Agreement of 2013, any doubts on the LAC could be resolved by flag meetings or meetings of high- ranking officials of the two armies.

But all these agreements were thrown into the wind when the PLA troops entered the Indian side of the LAC stealthily in May 2020 and refused to budge claiming that it was their area.

After 16 rounds of talks between local commanders of the two armies, the PLA agreed to pull out most of its troops from the Indian territories. But hundreds of Chinese soldiers are still occupying sizeable areas of Despsang and Doklam.

China has also made permanent constructions, set up a few villages and populated them with their people on the Indian territories, besides making roads and bridges on the Indian side of the much-disputed LAC.

The PLA intruded into India and kept its troops stationed for months at the tri-junction of India, Bhutan and China in 2018. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2018 and discussed with President Xi Jinping. The Chinese President visited India in 2019 and met Modi in the southern state of Tamilnadu to improve the bilateral ties. Only a few months after this much-hyped summit talks, the PLA sent its troops to capture a big swathe of Indian territory in May 2020.

This happened when Xi Jinping was at the helm of the affair. He held the offices of the CCP General Secretary, Chairman of the Military Commission and the President of the country. He faced no challenge nor was he under any type of pressure in his country.

Playing the video of clashes between the two counties at the once in five year party congress is enough to send strong signals to its neighbours.

Will Xi Jinping Eclipse Mao Zedong?

All eyes are set on the Communist Party of China which will begin its 20th Congress Sunday morning in the Great Hall of People in Beijing.

It will begin with an address by General Secretary Xi Jinping. All the meetings will be held closed doors with no indication of media coverage, but certain points are obvious.

About 2,300 delegates will attend the 20th CPC Congress, representing more than 96 million CPC members and over 4.9 million primary-level Party organizations.

Xi Jinping is most likely to get the third term as the CPC General Secretary. If it happens, he will go down in history as the only person after the legendary Mao Zedong to be at the helm for such a long period.

All his predecessors including the stalwarts like Hu Jintao and Jiang Zemin accepted the unwritten rule of holding the powerful office for a maximum of two terms.

Xi Jinping also holds the office of the Chairman of the Military Commission, an extremely powerful position.

He may be re-elected President of the country when the National People’s Congress, the Chinese Parliament, meets in March of next year.

Deg Xiaoping held the offices of the Chairman of the Military Commission and the CCP Secretary General, but he never became the president of the country.

Political observers believe Xi Jinping may get another term to fulfil his famous Chinese Dream.

Soon after getting elected as the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, Xi announced a political slogan and called it the China Dream.

cpc congress china xi jinping mao zedong

He called it the ‘great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.’ Xi envisaged that China should become a fully developed nation at the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Revolution in 2049.

The Chinese Dream has four parts: strong China, civilized China, harmonious China, and beautiful China.

But the most significant part of the China Dream is to make it a military superpower that is second to none.

Xi Jinping carried out significant reforms in the People’s Liberation Army, reduced the number of troops, and gave marching orders to many senior and hawkish generals.
Secondly, he launched the process of modernizing the PLA, giving it state-of-the-art weapons and a modern warfare system, matched only by the US.

Xi Jinping also dreamt to make the country the economic superpower and it has already eclipsed the biggest economy, the US.

He launched the ambitious Belt and Road Initiative. Consequently, Chinese firms are working on infrastructure projects in Latin America, the African continent, part of Europe and Asia.

Projects worth about USD  500 billion are under different levels of construction around the world.

Xi Jinping aims to make a significant change in the industrial and economic scenario of the country.

From the manufacturing hub of the world, he wants to make China a centre of innovation, a knowledge-based economy. Chinese firms have been asked to focus on artificial intelligence, virtual reality, the Internet, chips, semiconductors, electric vehicles, solar batteries and power generated from nuclear fusion.

The Chinese people are learning the English language and sooner than later they may overtake India in the BPO business.

China needs its leader to continue so that he could achieve the dream of the country. Xi Jinping wiped out all sorts of opposition or challenge to his leadership in the garb of uprooting corruption. Generals, party stalwarts, high ranking officials have been either put behind the bars or sidelined.

A few days before the CPC Congress, former Deputy Public Security Minister, Sun Lijun, was jailed for life.

Sun Lijun was sentenced for giving and taking bribes, manipulating the stock market and illegally owning firearms.

He was handed a suspended death sentence that will be commuted to life imprisonment after two years.

By putting behind bars a high official ahead of the party Congress, the General Secretary has sent a message down the rank and file of the party.

But just two days ahead of the congress, three banners appeared on a flyover at the Haidian area of the capital city of Beijing.

One of the banners read: “No Covid test, we want to eat. No restrictions, we want freedom. No lies, we want dignity. No Cultural Revolution, we want reform. No leaders, we want votes. By not being slaves, we can be citizens.”

The other called on residents to “go on strike at school and work, remove the dictator and national traitor Xi Jinping”.

More significantly, many people have come forward on social media platforms to praise the lone protester’s actions.

He has been hailed as a “hero” and referred to as the “new Tank Man” – a reference to the unknown Chinese man who stood in front of tanks during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.

The protest and the sentencing of the high official ahead of the CPC Congress have underlined the simmering discontent against the powerful leader.

Such protests are insignificant in a country with a population of 150 crores. But the symbolism can not be ruled out.

Will Xi Jinping get another five-year term, will his doctrine be adopted as the Xi Jinping Thought in the Chinese Communist Party constitution? Will he eclipse Mao Zedong who had put his father behind the bars?

The Great Hall of People will echo the answers to these questions soon.

As Aussies look to defend Crown, T20 World Cup set for Spills, Thrills and High Voltage Action

0

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he moment all cricket fans were anticipating for months has finally arrived as the T20 World Cup gets underway in Australia from Sunday. While it has staged two ODI World Cups in the past, Australia will host the T20 edition for the very first time. The event is all set to be the biggest carnival of cricket as 16 top teams play 45 matches in seven cities across Australia over the next month. Reigning T20 World Cup champions, Australia will look to use their home conditions to advantage and retain their crown. But with several countries, led by top-ranked T20 side India, vying to win the prestigious trophy, the World Cup promises to be full of thrilling encounters and high-voltage action of the highest quality.

The T20 format is the most dynamic and the most unpredictable. But the form in bilateral series and multilateral tournaments since the last World Cup suggests that some of the teams start as favourites. Most experts feel that Australia, India, England and Pakistan are the top picks to reach the semi-finals. The Aussies have always been formidable at home and were the winners of last year’s T20 World Cup.

No team has ever won the T20 World Cup at home but the Aussies have a settled unit without any major changes since last year. Most fans wonder why Cameron Green, the star of the series in India recently, is not a part of the squad. The teams were announced before the India series but many think that Australia could well spring a last-minute surprise and finally field Green to bolster the all-round strength of their powerful line-up. They already have a fine middle order with Maxwell and Wade in terrific form and the new entrant, Tim David, is a strong addition to the team since the last World Cup.

The world champions of the One-day format, England, are also tipped by cricket pundits as one of the top contenders. While some star players are missing from last year’s squad, Ben Stokes is back in the team and is a huge plus. They also have a new captain in Jos Buttler but Jason Roy has been dropped after a torrid summer and in his place, Alex Hales has made a comeback. The aggressive batting approach of the English has now been adopted by many other teams including India. Ranked second in T20I Team Rankings, England has been a consistent force in white-ball cricket for some years and it will be interesting to see how they evolve their strategy further so that they can grab their second T20 championship.

This brings us to India and Pakistan! The clash on October 23 is one of the biggest attractions of the World Cup – tickets for this mouth-watering clash were sold off months ago. Pakistan surprised India at the T20 World Cup last year. But in the recent Asia Cup, the two arch-rivals had scored one win each. Both sides are in great form. Post the Asia Cup, Indian batting is firing on all cylinders – not just Surya Kumar Yadav who bats like a dream these days but skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli are now in fine nick. But the absence of pace-ace Bumrah and the all-round skills of Ravindra Jadeja are a major setback for Team India which is facing serious worries over the bowling unit.

In contrast, Pakistan will be bolstered by the return of Shaheen Afridi – the most fearsome weapon in their campaign in the last T20 World Cup. While Pakistan’s bowling remains a ferocious armoury, their batting despite the exploits of captain Babar Azam and his opening partner Mohammed Rizwan has often been fragile. Ultimately, the crucial encounter may well turn out to be a contest between India’s formidable batting and Pakistan’s powerful bowling battery. Overall, the India-Pakistan contest promises to provide a blockbuster start to the World Cup.

Besides these firm favourites, there are some Dark Horses who can spring a big surprise – West Indies, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. With their natural flair and raw talent, the West Indies are always a potent threat. Their new-look squad under new skipper Nicholas Pooran is looking for a fresh start after the ageing, a star-studded group of players flopped in the 2021 tournament. Similarly, despite much turmoil at home in recent months, Sri Lanka triumphed at the Asia Cup last month which suggests they could be potential winners if they progress. But like in 2021, Sri Lanka will begin the tournament in the First Round and will need to first qualify for the Super 12 stage. Last year’s beaten finalists New Zealand are also a fighting unit with terrific all-round skills. Though the Kiwis are coming to the World Cup flying a bit under the radar, they sure can stun more fancied sides as they did a year ago.

Finally, all T20 World Cups have delivered drama of the highest quality – from Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in the inaugural championship in 2007 to Shaheen Afridi’s new-ball fireworks last year. With most teams evenly matched and close contests anticipated, the T20 World Cup 2022 could well outdo earlier editions and produce a memorable spectacle for all fans and cricket experts!

MBA degree holder employed with MNC nabbed for urinating inside a mosque in Jharkhand

Kolkata/Giridih: Jharkhand police have arrested four people for allegedly urinating inside a mosque in Giridih from the spot. Among the four accused, two are real brothers and another is a cousin. Of the two brothers, one holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration degree and is an employee of a multinational company (MNC). The other is a hotel management pass out. While the third person, their cousin, is a contractor and father of a daughter. The fourth accused deals in real estate. All accused are residents of the Pachamba area of Giridih district.

The father (deceased) of the two brothers used to be a teacher in a government school.

The incident that took place on Navami, the ninth day of the Durga Puja celebration, has not just shocked people but also the educational and professional background of the accused has stumped many.

On October 4, Sunny Raj, an employee of a multinational company (Bangalore office), reached Nayi Masjid situated at Khutta, Telodih. The 25-year-old was wearing a bermuda (presently working from home) and forcibly entered the mosque while people were offering Zohar (afternoon prayers). He then reached the Mimber [a pulpit in a mosque where the imam (leader of prayers) stands to deliver sermons] and urinated there. Soon people caught him.

His act was captured in the CCTV cameras installed inside the mosque.

“People present in the mosque also caught hold of another person, Rohit Raj (also in bermuda) outside the gate with a scooter. While two other persons — Deepalok Mitra and Chandan Gupta were waiting in a four-wheeler some distance away from him,” reads the FIR (copy with eNewsroom).

“While they were being beaten by the locals for their vile act, police reached the spot, following which the accused were handed over to them. But, there was a time when people were so agitated that to stop them police had to fire in the air to disperse the crowd,” informed Shabbir Alam, the Mukhiya (panchayat head) of Telodih.

Later, during a police investigation, it was revealed that Sunny Raj had attempted to enter another mosque situated along Pachamba main road to do the same but there he could not enter the mosque as people stopped him after noticing that he was wearing a bermuda.

Pachamba police station officer in-charge Saurav Raj told eNewsroom, “Everything has been recorded in the CCTV of Khutta masjid and there are other strong pieces of evidence against the accused.”

At both the mosques– the acts by accused Sunny Raj– successful and unsuccessful have been recorded on CCTV camera.

A case (number 130/2022) has been registered and sections—109, 153, 153 (A) (2), 245, 295 (A), 296, 12C (B) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code have been slapped against the five accused.

The 295 (A) is a section is slapped when deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings are performed. It is a non-bailable offence.

One accused, Babla Keshri, is absconding.

Additional Superintendent of Police Haris Bin Zaman told eNewsroom, “We are conducting regular raids to arrest Babla Keshari.”

The IPS officer also added that police seized the CCTV footage from the mosque concerning the incident, as its circulation could further create tension among people.

However, when Deepalok Mitra’s wife, Nayantara, a private school teacher, was contacted, she claimed, “We come from a well-to-do educated family. Sunny is mentally unstable. When my husband got a call concerning Sunny entering a mosque, I was about to serve lunch to my husband and his friend Chandan. Deepalok and Chandan went to bring Sunny back.”

But, Saurav, the officer-in-charge claimed, “During our investigation, we have not found any ‘mental instability’ in Sunny. Also, if he is unstable, why did he try executing his act at another mosque, four kilometres away after being unsuccessful at one.”

“We have diffused a very big communal incident in Giridih and Jharkhand. Had there been no CCTV footage, nobody would have believed that on Navami, a Hindu will go to a Muslim area and urinate in a mosque,” claimed Telodih Mukhiya.

He added, “We have also got information that Sunny had bought an expensive bike Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 which cost more than 4 lakhs in July this year. A person with an unstable mind or his family will not allow him to buy such a bike. It was a big conspiracy to create communal unrest in the city. Now, it is the police, who have to further investigate.”

Who is Sunny Raj?

An employee of an MNC, Sunny, did his schooling in Giridih. Later he did his MBA in human resources from Bengaluru and got a job there. A fan of Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias, Sunny used to share a lot of his pictures. His social media profile indicates that he is a self-centred guy. Sunny seems very active on Instagram too but his profile is private. His father, the late Suresh Nath Mitra had retired as a teacher. His elder brother, also arrested, has done hotel management from Bengaluru and is running a restaurant in Giridih. Rohit is married. Their sister has studied law and works as a legal advisor for a firm in Bengaluru. Deepalok, the cousin, who is behind bars too, is a contractor.

Politics on the issue

Significantly, all four accused have no direct connection with any political party in Jharkhand. However, several leaders of one political party, which is in opposition in Jharkhand, reached the police station pledging in favour of the accused. Officials, on condition of anonymity, mentioned that some senior leaders belonging to the party had called higher police authorities to have the issue dismissed.

Telodih residents present at the police station didn’t approve of their explanations. They even told the sympathisers that if the act had not been planned to create communal tension in the city during Durga Puja, then how did they reach the police station so fast in defence of the accused?

Later, former MP and BJP leader Ravindra Rai conducted a press conference and questioned the arrest of the four persons by Giridih police. Rai asked if it was now, not allowed to venture into a Muslim area, alleging that these were caught by the people belonging to the Muslim community and later police arrested them for entering their area.

On October 13, former chief minister and BJP leader Babulal Marandi held a PC in the state capital and alleged that police beat the four accused in the presence of two JMM MLAs—Sudivya Sonu and Sarfaraz Ahmad. He further went on to add, “Police has also forced the arrested youth and took confession from them.”

To which JMM district president Sanjay Singh replied, “First of all, Babulal Ji stature like a leader should condemn such an act in which somebody has tried to ruin the sanctity of a religious place. But this could not be expected from him (Babulal) now.”

“Now, his (Babulal) politics only depend on creating religious division in the society. JMM MLAs have nothing to do in this matter. The police is doing its job. We can only say that being in the government we will ensure that neither culprits are spared nor innocents are implicated,” said Singh.

Support for other accused not for Sunny

Alok Ranjan, a resident of Pachamba and lawyer, claimed, “Sunny did not remain in the city much so we do not know much about him. But Deepalok is not the kind of people who can hurt the religious sentiments of others.”

While Suhail Alam, a neighbour of Chandan Gupta vouched for him, “Last year, I had a major accident. I had fallen from my building, and it was Chandan who not only took me to a hospital at midnight but later got me admitted to another city after getting referred. He also lent me financial support for the treatment. I do not believe Chandan can be involved in such activities.”

However, sources claimed that Babla Keshri, whom police have yet to arrest, can divulge many secrets about the incident.

“I have known Sunny for over 15 years. He is not a guy to do such an act. On that very day, I got a call from Babla Keshari that Sunny had gone towards the mosque. He told me to go and bring him. But by the time I could reach there, I noticed something had already happened and people at the mosque had caught him. Seeing the crowd I did not move any further,” said Kunal Sao, a friend.

Sao mentioned, “There was some issue with him three years back, but he was fine now. However, I was not in Giridih for the last three months. I was in Delhi, so I do not know if there has been any change in his behavior recently.”

Police is being tight-lipped on the reason behind the accused urinating inside the mosque. Whether some more people were behind them, or it was done under some influence of drugs or both?

Worked under 5 CMs and 2 Governors in UP, but I felt most empowered under Mulayam Singh Yadav

0

I am really saddened by the untimely demise of Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji. He was one of the finest Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh I know of.

I have had the privilege of working under his leadership as District Magistrate of Hamirpur and Maharajganj districts, Commissioner of Basti division, and Director and Secretary to Government. A compassionate leader and an able administrator, he significantly contributed towards the state’s development. His no-nonsense approach and dealing with communal forces with iron hands was unprecedented and has never been replicated by any other leader later.

As District Magistrate, I used to get his phone calls early in the morning around 7:00-7:30 am on a specified day, every week, in which he would inquire about major issues I was facing and how he could help me deliver better. He would also seek feedback on the political leaders of his party in the district and will weigh my views heavily while deciding about their future. Those were the days when a District Magistrate‘s feedback could see the sacking of a political leader, not vice versa!

There was a time when I made a decision in Hamirpur that was politically inconvenient to him and his party. I had taken that decision in the larger public interest. Even before a word of resentment could be uttered by his party leaders, he immediately owned up to my decision and publicly applauded me, thereby virtually silencing his party-men. My morale was boosted and I felt empowered. This is where I learnt what statesmanship meant.
He had issued standing instructions to all District Magistrates to call upon him whenever they visited Lucknow. Issuing directions is one thing and ensuring compliance is another, especially when you have to comply with your instructions.

While all District Magistrates would comply with the Chief Minister’s orders and try to meet him whenever they visited Lucknow, it is extremely difficult for a Chief Minister to find time and meet visiting District Magistrates in an unscheduled manner.

However, there was not even a single occasion when he would not be able to find time to meet me. He will give you at least 10-15 minutes with undivided attention, seek feedback, and give clear directions. I always came back to the district satisfied and empowered.
There was a major issue regarding the location of the headquarters of the new Maharajganj district. The issue was highly politically sensitive and his party had taken a stand. I did my survey, consulted stakeholders, and made a recommendation to him in the form of a detailed report. He approved it despite my recommendation being politically inconvenient to him.

In the Basti division, amidst a major breakdown of law and order during elections, I made a direct phone call to him and sought his support in handling the situation. He asked me who was the tallest leader of his party on the ground and asked me to connect with him over the phone. I did that and the entire law and order problem was resolved within minutes after he spoke to that leader.

Once a Minister of his cabinet complained to him about me. He told him that he knew me well and that I would not listen even to him as the Chief Minister if he was not convinced. He told the Minister to back off. You can imagine how empowered I felt. The Minister then saw my point and became friend with me.

I have worked under 5 Chief Ministers and 2 Governors in Uttar Pradesh and I can say without hesitation that I felt most empowered under Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji’s leadership.

I could deliver the most for the poor and socially downtrodden under his tenure. It was basically because of the unbridled access he provided me, the trust he had in me, and the manner in which he owned up to my decisions even when they were politically inconvenient to him. These are rare qualities in leaders of today.

A kind human being. An able administrator. A fatherly figure. Someone I would remember forever. Rest In Peace Sir. You will always be missed!
