Rajasthan’s Political Canvas: BJP’s Victory Brushstroke, Congress’ Challenge for 2024

0

Kolkata: Two men walking down a congested Kolkata street, quipped, “So, Congress lost all the four state elections.” His friend shook his head and said, “Lost three but won a new territory – Telangana.”

The first one continued cynically, “Well, it doesn’t look all’s well for the INDIA camp.”

Conversations like this were hot not just at the news telecast but also at the tea kiosks across Kolkata after the election results were declared for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

Veteran journalists, analysts and social activists were waiting for Rajasthan election results, with bated breath. Quite predictably, by most, the election results for these four states were being seen as the precursor for the 2024 General Elections.

Speaking to eNewsroom, Jaipur-based veteran journalist Narayan Bareth said, “This victory will definitely boost the morale of the BJP leaders and party workers for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The election mandate on the other hand made it evident that the Congress needs to take care of its in-fighting. This can’t continue and will only make things difficult for the party.”

Adding to that, former professor, Mohammad Hasan, who is also based in the Pink City said, “It’s a trend in Rajasthan that every five years we rotate the party forming the government. However, this time, many were hopeful about Congress winning the election, as the Ashok Gehlot government had flagged off some exceptionally good welfare schemes. But it seems like people are lured more by speeches that Eulogises the narrative of a resurgent India.”

Yakub Mohammad, a social activist from Udaipur felt that the welfare schemes of the incumbent government failed to make voters vote in their favour, primarily, because of the fact that the BJP leaders were able to polarize the Hindu voters by ‘othering Muslims and projecting Congress as a pro-Muslim political party. “In Rajasthan, polarization worked and made voters reject Gehlot’s welfare schemes,” he said.

So, what does the election results mean for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Polls? Answering that question, retired professor of Journalism and political observer Rajan Mahan told eNewsroom, “The state elections have a lesson for the opposition parties. They need to understand that they need to come up with campaigns that will take on BJP’s polarizing narratives and new strategies that will help them overcome the caste politics. The propagation of Sanathan dharma and completion of Ram Mandir are an added advantage to the BJP.” He paused and then added, “Unfortunately, I don’t see the Congress recovering from the recent jolt that it got both in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.”

Prof Hasan added, “It’s sad to see journalists only talking about votes and results. Not, many are interested to analyse – How the results are going to affect the social fabric of India. The present regime at the centre has broken the spine of every single institution, so that none can stand up to what’s being done in the country by the fascist regime. I see this victory as a precursor to dark days in store for the minorities in the country.”

Meanwhile, social activist Kavita Srivastava said, “We have to respect the people’s mandate. But we are hoping that whoever is appointed as the net chief minister of the state won’t be divisive or target the minorities and will respect the civil liberties of the citizens.”

On the impact on Lok Sabha elections, she mentioned, “The opposition needs to work together. They didn’t work together as an alliance in the state elections.”

BJP’s Madhya Pradesh sweep: Hindutva, Nationalism and Welfare Schemes Strike Gold

0

Bhopal: Bharatiya Janata party leaders might say social welfare schemes, freebies or revadis but when it gets mixed with nationalism and Hindutva, it becomes such a cocktail that the party sweeps Hindi belts and it happened in Madhya Pradesh.

Though the Congress initially claimed to win 150 seats in Madhya Pradesh, it faced setbacks, leading only in the early ballot count and trailing consistently from the first round. The results have not only sent a shockwave among the workers but have also prompted the leadership of the Congress party to introspect on their policies and strategies for the general elections next year.

While Kamal Nath won the Chhindwara assembly seat with 36,594 votes, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan won his Budhni assembly seat with 104,974 votes. Interestingly, the Home Minister Narottam Mishra lost the Datia assembly seat with 7742 votes to Congress’s Bharti Rajendra.

 Disappointing performance by Congress

The party workers gathered in large numbers around a strong room in the old jail of Bhopal to monitor the ballot count. As the BJP workers rejoiced with early leads, losing all hope the Congress workers began leaving in resentment of an unexpected loss. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured 163 seats out of 230 in the state assembly elections, while the Congress Party won 66 seats. The Bharat Adivasi Party won one seat. The BJP obtained a 48.56% vote share surpassing the Congress which stood at 40.40%.

The Congress won 114 seats in the 2018 elections, securing 40.89% of the vote share. The BJP secured 41.02% of the vote share.

The people of Madhya Pradesh, who desired change, were disheartened by the Congress’ poor performance. “Kamal Nath is the leader of the air conditioned room. How many times did he engage with the public? He left Bhopal a week before the elections and returned only to mark his presence on the stage when Rahul Gandhi arrived. He did not participate in the roadshow. Now people will suffer because of his over-confidence. How long will Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh lead the Congress in Madhya Pradesh? They are ineffective,” reacted Alam, an educationist.

After losing the elections, the sentiment of anger toward the Congress Party was greater among the people for shattering their hopes. “What I have understood from these results is that the majority community only votes for Hindutva. Nothing else matters to them,” commented Shadma.

The sole concern for elderly people was a more unsafe environment and communalism against Muslims. “They will not let us live peacefully. The results show that these elections were not Congress versus BJP and unfortunately Hindus against Muslims,” said Sajid Khan.

Congress Leaders’ Embrace of Soft Hindutva Over Secularism Proves Fatal

Senior Journalist Shams Ur Rehman Alavi in conversation with eNewsroom questioned The Congress’s strategy of adopting a soft Hindutva approach. He questioned how soft Hindutva can work for a party when hard Hindutva is the forte of another. It’s falling into a trap, following the other, not doing anything unique, but rather imitating and playing weak on the other’s strong pitch.

“Congress failed to assess public mood and Shivraj Chouhan’s emotional appeals in rallies, his utmost humility apart from hard work in crisscrossing the state during the campaign, paid off.”

“Congress didn’t have any idea about people’s pulse and could not establish a connection with citizens despite anti-incumbency. It could not throw any idea that could make voters excited or drawn towards it. The party campaign was directionless and the think tank didn’t seem to listen to voices outside its ecosystem. Kamal Nath is neither as humble nor a good orator and has little appeal outside Chhindwara. He failed and it has been a true disaster,” commented Alavi.

 Ignoring Muslims was not beneficial

Like Alavi, others also seem disappointed with the Congress’s performance. However, the result was expected for Anas Ali of the Barkatullah Youth Forum. He said that the people of Madhya Pradesh have proved to the entire nation that the grand old party cannot defeat BJP in a direct fight. We cannot blame EVM for the landslide victory of the BJP. It is for Congress to accept that they fail to appease the majority community and do not get their votes.

“The Ladli Behna Yojna is just an excuse to justify their failure. The results make it clear that it is impossible to defeat the BJP in the Hindi belt,” said Ali.

He added that there are many constituencies with Muslim voters above fifty thousand where Congress has failed to shift Hindu voters. “There are sixty to seventy thousand Muslim voters in Narela constituency voting for Congress. But the party failed to get even twenty to thirty thousand votes from the majority community. Even after ignoring Muslims by separating and not mentioning them in the party manifesto, the Congress lost badly. There is no difference between soft and hardcore Hindutva- it is one,” said Ali

Incumbent MLA from Narela constituency Vishwas Sarang won with 24,569 votes defeating Congress’ Manoj Shukla. Sarang is also the Medical Education and Gas Relief and Rehabilitation Minister in Madhya Pradesh.

While the BJP did not give a single ticket to any Muslim candidate, the Congress gave only two tickets to Arif Masood from the Bhopal Madhya constituency and Atif Aqueel from the Bhopal Uttar constituency. Both of whom have won with good margins.

Congress’ non-Muslim votes transferred to BJP

Mohammad Mahir of the Muslim Vikas Parishad said that instead of presenting themselves better, the Congress chose to stick with Hindutva, especially Kamal Nath who failed to connect with the workers on the ground. They attempted to satisfy the angry workers with positions in the PCC (Pradesh Congress Committee). It did not help without proper connections and contact with workers.

“The ticket distribution played a major factor in these results, the party did not learn from the past and repeated similar mistakes. Hence, history is repeated. In a few constituencies like Burhanpur, the Congress’s non-Muslim vote transferred to the BJP, which is doing majoritarian politics,” stated Mahir.

There was a demand for a Muslim candidate from the Burhanpur assembly seat ignored by the Congress Party and given a ticket to the controversial Thakur Surendra Singh against BJP’s Archana Didi. The AIMIM (All India Madjil-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen) observed the benefit of a large number of Muslim voters and nominated Nafees Mansha from there.

BJP’s Archana Didi defeated the Congress candidate with 31171 votes. A former BJP worker Harshvardhan Nand Kumar Singh Chouhan had filed for nomination as an independent candidate and got 35,435 votes. Nafees Mansha secured 33,853 votes.

According to Mahir, Indore-1, Indore-5, Jaora, Jabalpur East, Ujjain Uttar, Sironj have considerable Muslim votes that could be given to Muslim candidates by Congress. “They lectured so much about the winnability ratio and yet lost,” he quipped.

Congress lost all these seats except Jabalpur East. Lakhan Ghangoria defeated BJP’s Anchal Sonkar with 27,741 votes.

Mahir added that after Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh is a laboratory for the right-wing party. They had to secure victory anyway. Nationalism, Hindutva, and ‘freebies’ in terms of Ladli Behna Yojna have worked here.

Congress Electoral Rollercoaster: Triumph in Telangana, Turmoil in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh

Kolkata: The mandate of four state assembly elections is out. With Congress losing in two states—Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh where they were in power, winning in Telangana and could not win Madhya Pradesh made the Grand Old Party’s fight for the 2024 General Election a tight one, and the advantage they had after the Karnataka assembly win seems gone.

Election results in four states

In the largest state of India, Rajasthan, where the Bharatiya Janata Party seems to be getting a comfortable majority, Congress could not break the jinx that the ruling party would never return to power in this state. But, Congress lost the opportunity of defeating the saffron brigade which had no declared chief ministerial face. Ashok Gehlot’s government had also done some welfare work. However political observers believe that the Gehlot government’s major policy decisions came late and could not benefit common men. There were also communal flare-ups from time to time in the state but the Congress government could not contain it. While Gehlot had a free hand in ticket distribution, there was also visible infighting between him and Sachin Pilot for almost five years. Additionally, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi only campaigned for the assembly poll at the last stage. While Gehlot had a free hand in ticket distribution, it was also said that he did not distribute it to the right candidates.

In the heart of India—Madhya Pradesh, where there was huge anti-incumbency, Congress did not cash the situation. Kamal Nath, the party’s CM candidate, had a free hand in choosing candidates, but some of his selections proved to be detrimental. Kamal Nath did soft Hindutva and not only visited many temples during his campaigning, but he also called controversial baba, Dhirendra Shashtri to his constituency. He also gave interviews to Godi Media anchors, against whom the Congress party had boycotted and decided not to send spokespersons to their studios. Congress gave only two tickets to Muslims and did not field a Muslim from the Burhanpur seat, where minority voters are a decisive factor. Both Muslim candidates, Arif Masood and Atif Aqueel, won from their respective seats, Burhanpur’s Congress candidate Thakur Surendra Singh lost to the BJP by over 31,000 votes.

Kamal Nath also did not do an extensive campaigning like Shivraj Singh Chouhan did.

Chhattisgarh, where Congress had come to power after 15 years of BJP rule, its loss is more shocking than in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Here Congress CM Bhupesh Baghel was claiming it as a model state. Baghel did all to lure Hindu voters and throughout his five years of tenure, he always tried that he should not be seen as a leader who stands for minority rights, whether for Christians or Muslims. In one incident, in which both Hindus and Muslims were killed, he compensated the families of Hindu and not Muslim victims. Baghel also brought back an IPS officer, who was controversial during the BJP regime and civil society did not like the Congress government’s decision.

Telangana remains the only state where the BJP was not in a direct fight with Congress. Here, BRS, who completed two terms, had leaders seen as corrupt, and Congress became the alternative to the people here.

Impact on INDIA formation and the 2024 General Election

Losing in two states where Congress was in power is going to weaken the position of the party in the INDIA bloc, as TMC, SP, and AAP were already having issues with Congress on seat sharing. Now, they will not make any compromise. There was also a demand to declare a convener of the INDIA bloc, but it was not finalised.

Besides well-thought-out seat sharing, the INDIA block and its leaders have to think about how they can counter BJP’s propaganda and match the hard work of its leaders during campaigning to get the results of the Lok Sabha Election in 2024, in their favour.

On December 6, INDIA’s parties will meet to decide future course of action.

Population Power Shift: BJP Grasps Control of 20 Crore Strong Territories in MP, Raj and Chhattisgarh

Bhopal: The loss in big states has come as a major setback to Congress and also affects the prospects of INDIA alliance ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections.

Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan along with Chhattisgarh, have an estimated population of over 20 crore in 2023 and this huge territory is now again in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s hands.

Congress could not even realise that on the grassroots, there was no impact of its pro-Hindutva rhetoric or optics like seeking blessings at Bageshwar Dham didn’t work.

Besides, Congress leaders failed to exploit the anti-incumbency factor in MP, as they had nothing in terms of alternative vision or something new to deliver or policies that could turn voters towards them.

The grand old party remained complacent and felt that, perhaps, bored after multiple terms of BJP, the public would on its own change the regime and vote en masse for the opposition.

However, in the last couple of months, Shivraj Chouhan used his entire political experience and goodwill among women voters apart from his immensely humble style in election campaign, to change the mood.

When he would ask the crowd if they would like to see the ‘Mama Sarkar’ go, it hit an emotional chord.

The scheme and transfer of cash, apart from promise to increase it in future, gave hope to poor women across communities and castes.

Congress appeared to do nothing unique and different. Had no great orators or charismatic leaders. The result is such a disastrous performance.

Kamal Nath was expected  to lead from the front but he appeared clueless

Neither he could galvanize the campaign, nor give any passionate speeches or come up with slogans that could catch public attention.

It was dull and uninspiring leadership, devoid of emotions.

Kamal Nath, who has spent most of his time in national politics and earlier kept himself limited to Chhindwara for decades, was not a face that could garner votes in MP.

Also, the backroom planning, strategy and professionalism that is needed, was nowhere seen.

It was a tired old man who was made to mount the horse, act as a general and lead a weary army that had neither the killer instinct, nor the passion, and had come to battle, unenthusiastically.

Election Results With Independent Media

Kolkata: Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana assembly election results analysis by independent media organizations’ journalists.

Many political observers believe that the five state’s polls (Mizoram’s results will be announced tomorrow) will have a major impact on the 2024 General Election of India, the world largest democracy. It will also reflect on the INDIA Alliance formed by the opposition parties to take on ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA. The results will impact the seat sharing, a major issue among the parties in INDIA.

Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh election results being announced on the date of 39th anniversary of Bhopal Gas Tragedy is a matter of concern for the activist working for the cause of survivors and victims of the world largest industrial disaster.

Speaking to eNewsroom, Nasreen Bee said that people mourn the loss of their loved ones on this day. Now there will be noises of drums, crackers, and celebrations. The government itself mourns and marks the Bhopal gas tragedy by paying tribute to gas victims. Yet they ignored it. “The Chief Election Officer of Madhya Pradesh did not respond to our letter. When they can hold the result for 15 long days then what is the harm in holding it for the 16th day? This is a deliberate move to erase the Bhopal gas tragedy from the people’s memory,” said Nasreen.

Congress candidate’s Pragaman Gwalior South APP may become a game-changer in caste-based politics

0

Bhopal: Amongst the 230 Assembly segments in Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior (South) constituency witnessed a different treatment. Not because that the assembly segment enjoys rich historical and cultural landmarks for which Gwalior is known but because the assembly seat is considered to be a bastion of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The fact is that the country’s first BJP Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born at Kamal Singh Ka Bagh, which falls under this assembly segment. Another fact is that several of the founders of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, the Ram Rajya Parishad, and the Hindu Mahasabha are from this assembly segment. And in the assembly segment lies a temple in memory of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse in the Daulatganj area. Probably, the only temple that exists in the name of the father of the nation’s assassin. And where many of Godse supporters observe November 15 as “Sacrifice Day”, the day Godse was hanged to death in 1949 after being convicted of killing the father of the nation.

This is perhaps why the Gwalior (South) did not dare to break from the electoral pattern for decades. But not all of this text is agreed where a voter is the seldom king. Congress party snatched the segment from BJP’s two-time legislator Narayan Singh Kushwaha, the then Minister of State for Home Affairs in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan cabinet. In 2018, Congress party’s Praveen Pathak won by a slender margin of nearly 121 votes – the lowest margin in the last Assembly elections. Basically, the voters of Gwalior (South) shifted from the shadow of a political party towards a party that enjoys a completely different ideology.

There is a widespread perception that the caste-based demographic of the constituency offered a clear pathway for an electoral win. Combing through the data suggests that the segment is inhabited by people from different communities including Muslims, Kushwahas, Brahmins and SC ST, with their population being 36,000, 28,000, 24,000 and 54,000 respectively. Muslims were around six per cent, Jatavs 5.18 per cent, Nais 5.17 per cent, Brahmins 5.9 per cent, Vishwakarmas 4.8 per cent, Parihars 4.43 per cent, Pals 4.43 per cent, Yadavs-Khatiks 3.69 per cent, Sonis 3.69 per cent, Sindhis 3.69, Rathores 3.6 per cent, Prajapatis 3.6, Punjabis three per cent, Thakurs 1.48 per cent. The other communities such as Sindhis, Jains, Vaishyas, Marathas, Punjabis and Gurjars make up the rest of the population. The total number of sub castes and groups was 26.

On winning, Pathak began with the advantage of the segment’s electoral pattern, and played the importance of his party’s ideological card to its advantage.

“On becoming a legislator, I increased my meetings with people and community leaders. A series of sports, cultural, religious and other activities were organised to strengthen the voice of unity and friendship among the communities and people”, informed Praveen Pathak.

pragaman gwalior south app congress mp praveen pathak

This followed with Pathak participating in social integration programmes where he reached out to caste influencers, traders, local chambers, businessmen, farmers, women’s self-help groups, and others.

But that was not enough, accepts Pathak by adding that “the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and the idea of Mohabbat Ki Dukan gave me a different dimension”.

Thus, in January 2022, an app named Gwalior Dakshin (South) was introduced to encourage people of his constituency to rise above caste and religious lines and participate in strengthening a new relationship with other people of the assembly segment.

In the first strike, the idea of Pragaman Gwalior Dakshin APP was floated among the people, particularly among the young bright minded leaders from different communities, from different backgrounds to join the performance-community-connection based APP. To join the Gwalior Dakshin App, a criteria was set. Each user was asked to introduce a minimum 5 fresh users or maximum 25 families.

In July 2022, both performance-community-connection APP and leadership of Pathak got tested during the municipal polls held across the state. While Pathak devoted time to show the party’s united face to the voters, the performance -people-connection based APP set the score to select a likeable preferred candidate for the 20 wards of the Gwalior Municipal Corporation.

Every ticket aspirant was asked to make his support base to join the APP with voter specifications, said a ticket aspirant. The efforts began to bear fruit with one hundred and five aspirants in twenty municipal seats who had finished first, second, third, or fourth in the previous civic polls dropped the idea to contest in the elections. As a result, for the first time in 50 years, Gwalior saw the Congress snatching a mayoral seat from the BJP/Jan Sangh.

As a result, 1251 users expanded the Mohabbat Ki Dukan philosophy that made 92350 people of the Gwalior Dakshi to remain connected 24X7.

This time again, the contest is between Kushwaha and Pathak in Gwalior (South) in the same interesting caste-based demography. Kushwaha in his campaign played up the schemes announced by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, highlighted welfarist policies of Narendra Modi government and underlined Prime Minister’s popularity.

During the campaign, Pathak’s arsenal included a padyatra with door to door visit, promising to deliver free educational stationery to low-income children, modernizing schools in the region, honoring local heroes, improving health facilities, and creating job opportunities.

“Much of the promises were based on the suggestions that arrived from the users of the App,” said Abhay Singh, a voter from Ward no. 37.

Finally, on November 17, the day of voting, the app was able to virtually map every voter in the segment. And Pathak, through Pragaman, was able to see and clock in real-time how his support base of nearly 1,06,000 voters of the total number of voters 2,48,400 were at their polling stations by afternoon.

Political analysts think that any candidate getting over 93,000 votes would be a sure winner.

“Since 2003, the seat is considered to be a bellwether seat – a constituency that acts as a trend indicator of the entire geographical location or mirrors the results in that region. In 2018, the seat went to the Congress with the help of Mahesh Shivhare,” a senior journalist said. Kamal Nath-led government was formed after a gap of 15 years, he added. Unsurprisingly, the Nath government fell after 15-months due to a political proposition allowing Shivraj Singh Chouhan to head the State.

Whatever may be the outcome, the voters of Gwalior (South) segment where concerted attempts are being made to resurrect Gandhi’s killer Godse will have learned a lot from an intense contest on a new medium.

Bhopal’s Heartache: Election Results Day Clashes with Gas Tragedy Anniversary Ignites Outcry

0

Bhopal: The Election Commission of India is all set to announce the results of four state assembly elections together on December 3. As the political parties anxiously await the results in line with the predictions and exit polls, the anticipation among the voters is also visible. However, the choice of the result announcement date has sparked anger among the residents of Bhopal. December 3 holds significance as it marks the 39th anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy, a devastating industrial disaster that unfolded on the intervening night of 2-3 December 1984. The tragic incident claimed at least 25,000 lives and left thousands of individuals grappling with severe health issues.

Activists, survivors, and healthcare professionals have voiced their concerns about the insensitivity of choosing December 3 as counting date. It holds deep significance for the people of Bhopal. The clash between political priorities and the ongoing repercussions of the industrial disaster raises questions about the commitment to addressing the long-standing issues faced by the survivors.

Last minute revision in Mizoram’s counting date

Interestingly, the Election Commission has revised the result declaration date for Mizoram from December 3 (Sunday) to December 4 (Monday) citing that the commission had received various requests to change the date of counting from Sunday to any other weekday on the ground that December 3 (Sunday) marks a special significance for the people of Mizoram. The Election Commission revised the date of counting. Mizoram is the fifth state which went to polls on November 7. The counting date for the other four states Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will remain the same.

On November 10, five organizations working for gas victims wrote a letter to the chief election officer (CEO) of Madhya Pradesh, requesting him not to announce the election results on December 3, the anniversary and mourning day of the world’s worst industrial disaster. The candidates fighting assembly polls also registered their complaints in this regard.

The survivors of the Bhopal gas tragedy are disappointed with the decision of the election commission. They say that it is a strategy to wipe out the pain and suffering, gatherings and protests, and to deviate the minds of people from the horrific disaster. Anwar Jahan, who recently went through an eye surgery spoke to eNewsroom. Her eyes weakened after the gas tragedy. “It is ridiculous that the result declaration date of one state can be changed because of religious importance while thousands of deaths and severe ailments remain ignored. When the gas leaked we didn’t know what that itchy substance was? Without knowing what was happening we ran with our small children to save our lives. We saw corpses of men, women, and cattle on the way. Can there be any excuse to downplay that? asked Jahan.

On Friday, hundreds of people staged protests across Mizoram demanding to change the counting of votes for the State Assembly election held on November 7. The Christian-majority state of Mizoram devotes much of their Sundays to the Church and associated religious activities.

The toxic substance Methyl Isocyanate leaked from Union Carbide (India) Ltd (UCIL), a subsidiary of the US-based Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) owned by Dow Chemical Company. The factory was situated on the outskirts of Bhopal, merely 2-3 kilometers away from Bhopal station. According to a report from the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO), over 30 tons of poisonous gas adversely affected more than 600,000 workers and residents in the vicinity. The report highlighted that this disaster ranked among the major industrial accidents worldwide since 1919.

Survivors and alarming healthcare

Nasreen Bee was five years old when the gas leaked. She was admitted to the ICU in Hamidia Hospital for fifteen days because of a toxic case. Her father, brother, uncle, and aunt died in the aftermath of the gas tragedy and now her son suffers the complications passed through her because of poisonous gas.

In a press conference, Dr. Shweta Chaturvedi, a yoga therapist at the clinic, shared concerning statistics about Bhopal survivors under care. Since January 1, 2022, 22 of the 3832 individuals receiving care have passed away. Notably, 64% of these deceased individuals had been diagnosed with Hypertension, and 45% had Diabetes Mellitus. In 8 out of 10 cases, the deceased had both Hypertension and Diabetes. The third most common diagnosis among the deceased was respiratory illnesses, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Nitesh Dubey, a Registration Assistant at the clinic highlighted data from their records. Among 6254 individuals receiving care, those with a history of gas exposure were more than three times more likely to be diagnosed with Diabetes, Coronary Arterial Disease, Neuropathies, and Arthritis compared to those without gas exposure. Additionally, diagnosis of Hypertension, Acid Peptic disease, Asthma, COPD, Cervical spondylosis and Anxiety disorders were twice as common among survivors of the gas disaster.

The Sambhavna Trust Clinic has been running amid a severely affected community since September 1996. It has provided long-term care to 36-thousand persons exposed to toxic gas and contaminated water. They have won several national and international awards and their research published in international journals.

Condemnation and concerns

Activist Rachna Dhingra from the Bhopal Group for Information and Action strongly condemned the results date, labeling it an attempt to downplay the Corporation’s crimes with equal involvement from the government and now the Election Commission. She questioned the silence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Election Commissioner when the dates were announced. “Bhopal gas tragedy is a global issue. These people are complicit in the crimes committed against half a million people. There is no closure as the disaster persists in various forms—ongoing groundwater contamination, harm to the next generation, lack of proper medical care or rehabilitation, and the absence of punishment for those responsible for the Bhopal tragedy. Disaster isn’t a distant memory but an ongoing reality, with people succumbing to gas-related ailments, cancer and kidney diseases even today. If these political parties have any shame they will refrain from celebrations regardless of the election result,” Rachna reminded the political parties.

A report released by the Sambhavna Trust Clinic in February 2023 revealed that cancer is 2.5 times more prevalent in Bhopal gas tragedy victims compared to an unexposed population in other parts of the city. Women in the gas-exposed population were also found to be more likely to get lung cancers.

Let’s assume that the Election Commission was unaware of the gas tragedy, but what excuse does the Madhya Pradesh government have for not objecting? questioned activist Nawab Khan.

“The mourning and protest is not allowed but the celebrations have no restrictions. They want to merge the six hospitals and nine gas victim dispensaries with the health ministry. It is a complete erasure of the Bhopal gas tragedy. Narela is the most gas-affected area. Gas Relief Minister Vishwas Sarang gets votes from this area but fails to serve the gas victims,” said Khan.

Speaking on the official plans to close down the department set up for the welfare of the Bhopal survivors, Rachna informed, “We have recently come across an official document marked confidential that lays out a plan to close down the Department of Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief & Rehabilitation (BGTRR). The plan scheduled to be discussed at the next meeting of the state cabinet proposes handing over the 5 hospitals and 9 dispensaries run by the BGTRR to the Departments of Health & Family Welfare and Medical Education.”

Poetry, Protests and Powerful Speeches: Kolkata Stands with Palestine

0

Kolkata: Once again, Friends of Palestine raised the issue of ongoing genocide in Palestine in Kolkata. The organization held a public convention on the situation in Palestine, where for 40 days of the massacre before a 6-day temporary ceasefire, more than 15,000 people were killed, including over 8,000 children.

The convention that took place at the Islamia Institute had good attendance from listeners and speakers with diverse religious backgrounds, representing various professional fields.

The mood of the convention was set by poet Shakil Ansari with these lines: ‘Tod kar jungi kanoono ko, aur thukara ke tum UNO ko, julm-sitam rakhe zari, phir bhi Palestine tum pe bhari (By breaking norms of war laws and ruling out UNO, you are continuing with your atrocities, still Palestine is weighing heavy on you).

Ek kaam jo muskil hai, woh ho sakta hai asaan. Ghar-baith kar hi kar sakte hain hum jung ka alaan. Boycott karna hai Israeli Samaan (A work which is tough but can be easy, by sitting at home, we can announce the war, to boycott Israeli products).

Thereafter, Zahir Anwar, a writer and dramatist, said, “If you do not get disturbed by the news and what is happening in Palestine, you can understand that something is missing in you as a human. The kinds of non-describable images coming out of Palestine, is shaking us to the core . Pregnant women being burnt alive with the fetus coming out of her body, it is a horror to watch.”

He continued on the cruelty of Israel, “The morale of Israel’s police and army is dead. There are some rules in wars, but they are killing children, elderly and women. For 75 years, these atrocities have been committed by Israel.”

He also reminded people about the killing of a large number of journalists by Israel in Palestine. “In the last two-three decades, many journalists have not been killed anywhere in the world, as many Israelis have been killed in two or three months. After all these, they (Israel-America allies) tell us how to behave and claim themselves champions of human rights.”

Listen to Shakil Ansari’s poetry on Palestine

Bishamber Newar, the chief editor, informed us about the 1969 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), where leaders from 100 countries participated.” Yasir Arafat had also come. He was welcomed grandly. He had supported India in crisis. Arafat had not only friendship with us, but he had tried to have good relations with Jews too.”

“The attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7 has also shattered the myth of Mossad, which claimed to be the best intelligence agency in the world. The Indian government takes help from Mossad. Now you can understand how useful it is?” he added.

Sohan Singh Aitiana continued from where Bishamber left, “It is a matter of concern that why Modi’s government, I will not say it BJP government, has changed the foreign policy. He questioned what was going on in the country. It is beyond anybody’s understanding. SS Aitiana pointed out the issue of Punjabi community people getting killed by the government of India in Canada and America allegedly for being Khalistan supporters.

He alleged, “No minority is safe in India today. Kisan Andolan is termed Khalistani. Khalsa Aid, which is one of the biggest humanitarian causes across the world is also being disturbed. ”

He demanded that the present foreign policy, which has been our policy for 75 years, should not be changed.

Nasir Ahmed, president of Friends of Palestine, said that behind every instance of violence anywhere in the world, America is there, “The good number of people gathering here is a message of how serious people are on this issue. It is not an issue of Hindu-Muslim. Even what is happening in Palestine between Israelis and Palestinians is against Jews and Muslims. It is a case of Zionism, which is a disease. It has been created by America. Wherever there is a matter of violence, America is there. We are against Zionists and not against Jews.”

Justice Taufiqueuddin, Father Sunil Rozario, Dr Kalim Haique and Anis Rafi were other speakers.

A resolution was also passed against the barbarism by Israel and America in Palestine and read out in English, Bangla as well as in Urdu, on the occasion.
