Citizens raise concern on continued attacks on right to life in Jharkhand

Ranchi: Recent starvation deaths, communal lynching and violence, attempts by government to forcefully acquire land and repression of voices of dissent in Jharkhand, made at least 52 people, comprising academics, activists, representatives of people’s organisations and other concerned citizens express their concern on the situation.

In a joint statement that they released, they included all the major incidents that have shook Jharkhand in the recent past. The statement said, “Since 2014, people of Jharkhand have been facing severe attacks on their right to life by the Raghuvar Das led BJP government, which has been trying to acquire land belonging to the Adivasis and Moolvasis forcibly. This will directly affect their livelihoods. Also, there is a direct attack on the people’s freedom to practice their religion, which has led to lynching of Muslims and killing of Adivasis in the name of ‘cow protection’. At the same time, there is negligible focus on welfare programmes such as the Public Distribution System and social security pensions that has led to a spate of starvation deaths in the state in the recent past.”

Since September 2017, at least 12 persons have succumbed to starvation in Jharkhand. The immediate causes of these deaths according to the activists are – denial of subsidised rice due to absence of a ration card, cancellation of ration card not linked with Aadhaar and failure of Aadhaar-based biometric authentication at the ration shop.

The statement further reads, “It is true that some starvation victims were also ill, but they would probably have not succumbed to the illness if they had received adequate nutrition and medical care. Denial of social security pensions and absence of work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) further contributed to the destitution of the starving victims and their families. For every person who has died, hundreds other languish with hunger, malnutrition and illness.”

After starvation deaths, the concerned citizen and activists highlighted the issue of forcibly acquiring lands and creating land banks in the state.

“While the starvation deaths expose the lack of political commitment of the state government towards people’s welfare, the various tactics used to acquire one of the biggest assets of people, land, they are also telling of its anti-people motives. Despite widespread protests against amendments in the land acquisition act, the government has kept pressing for the amendments which have finally been approved by the President. The most crucial amendment is the waiving off of social impact assessment (SIA) for government acquisition for specific ‘public’ purposes such as setting up schools, colleges; railway line and electrification and so on. For such purposes, the government empowers itself to forcibly acquire even fertile multi-crop land,” it mentioned,” the statement said.

Social and environmental impact assessments need to be done by independent agencies and their reports need to be placed before the concerned Gram Sabhas for consent. Most activists maintain that waiving off the assessments will make it easier for the government to acquire land forcibly. They even fear that the government would soon use this amendment to acquire land for private institutions like education, health among others.

“The state government has also marked common lands of Adivasis and Moolvasis (such as rivers/rivulets, village roads, ponds, places of worship, burial grounds and so on) as part of “land bank” without the consent of the respective Gram Sabhas. The bank consists of 20.56 lakh acres of land across the state. Of this, 10.56 lakh acres are already earmarked for corporates with whom the government signed MoUs during Momentum Jharkhand. And 81 per cent of this area falls in the Fifth Scheduled Area,” the statement points out.

The activists mentioned that the forceful acquisition of land will have a direct impact on the livelihoods of the Adivasis and will literally violate their right to life. Not to mention, this is also a direct attack on the Adivasis’s constitutional right to self-governance.

The government is also repressing voices of dissent. Damodar Turi, convenor of Visthapan Virodhi Jan Vikas Andolan, was arrested on February 15, 2018 on charges of being member of the illegally banned Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti (MSS) and for celebrating the anniversary of the Russian Revolution.

The statement further stressed upon another major issue of the state — mob lynching of the minorities. “There communal violence in the state is on the rise. At least nine persons were lynched in the name of religion or cow protection in the last four years. Recently, two Muslim youths, accused of stealing buffaloes, were killed by a mob in Godda. In June, Nagri and Bero blocks of Ranchi also witnessed communal violence,” it stated.

The undersigned have demanded from opposition political parties to stand with the common men against the continuing attacks on their right to life.

The concerned citizens have demanded from Jharkhand government to: Universalise coverage of the Public Distribution System and social security pensions and ensure adequate work under NREGA in all the villages, remove mandatory linkage of welfare programmes with Aadhaar, withdraw amendments made in the land acquisition act, stop creating land bank, notify rules of Panchayata Extension to Scheduled Areas Act (PESA) and implement the act in its true spirit and release Damodar Turi and others who have been falsely implicated in the same case.

They have also demanded the government to ensure communal harmony in the state and ensure equality and justice for minorities and to take criminal action against those involved in cases of lynching and mob violence in the state.

The under signatories of the statement include, social activists like Stan Swamy, Kavita Srivastava, Xavier Das, Amitava Ghosh, Jean Dreze, Ankita Aggarwal, Aloka Kujur and Afzal Anis.

Know all about MD Irshad and Rajiya Bano who are supporting Mandsaur Rapist

Kolkata: People forwarding, sharing and abusing each other for two posts shared by alleged Pakistani nationals – MD Irshad and Rajiya Bano endorsing the brutal rape of a seven-year-old child in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. Both Rajiya and MD Irshad, claim to be Pakistani nationals, who are residents of port city Karachi. And they both were seen making obnoxious posts on various social media platform. They maliciously wrote – “Hindustan ka sher jisne A**** ka badla liya” along with sharing the picture of the rapist of the girl-child.

Alerted by the kind of reaction that it was evoking, eNewsroom, began searching about MD Irshad. A customary glance through his Facebook profile, confirmed that the account is a fake one, created with the intention of spewing hatred on social media. The account just lists his name as MD Irshad, alias Hyder Ali, a resident of Karachi Pakistan. But strangely enough all the pages that he likes are of India, all his friends are Indians and predictably he posts about Indian issues, in perfect Devnagri script and not Urdu.

mandsaur rape madhya pradesh fake id rajiya bano md irshad
The profile of MD Irshad get exposed with his strange liking for Indian Facebook pages

A Google reverse image search of Irshad’s profile picture took us to a 2016 news report of Independent, which identified the person a Mujibur Rahman, a 43-year-old, a New York man of Bangladeshi origin, had been beaten to a pulp by an American teenager, after yelling ISIS. It was during this investigation that eNewsroom stumbled upon, a similar profile by another name, Rajiya Bano, about which Alt News has also carried an expose.

“The most interesting part is that most people don’t even use their common sense, like how can Urdu-speaking Pakistanis post in Hindi. How come, Rajiya a faculty with Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU), specialize in Fashion? OLFU is a Phillipines University, which offers courses in Medicine and Nursing,” points out Samirul Islam, social activist and founder of Bangla Sanskriti Manch.

Most activists have raised concern about the ease with which a fake FB identity can be created. “I have worked as an undercover agent for the BJP IT Cells and am well aware of the loopholes that exist in Facebook, which are used to create fake ids to spread communal hatred. It’s a child play. You see the internet is an open source for so many pictures and documents, that one can easily use them to even verify the accounts,” says Soibal Dasguta, an upcoming author, who is penning down a memoir about his days spent in the RSS camp.

He maintains that even documents like pan card, Aadhaar and passport can be easily accessed and used to create accounts. He says, “Using legal documents of the dead is the easiest way out or of people hailing from other nations is the easiest way out, as it cuts down on the chances of any one contesting the authenticity of these verified fake accounts.”

Interestingly, Rajiya’s account and all posts with “Hindustan ka sher jisne A**** ka badla liya” on Mandsaur rape incident have been deactivated, after several alert citizens began ringing the alarm bell. But, that doesn’t mean that people with malicious intentions have stopped working. “Always cross check facts and authenticity of the source before hitting the share button,” warns Samirul.

It’s not 22, but 2+2 or 2-2 result for BJP in 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Bengal, predict analysts

Kolkata: It seems Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP’s) national president Amit Shah is over confident about his party’s progress in Bengal in recent times. Because, for 2019 election, he claimed, BJP will win around 22 seats in Bengal, which is over half the total 42 parliamentary seats in the state. As of now, BJP has only two members representing Bengal in the Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian parliament).

The two constituencies which belong to the saffron brigade, in Bengal are – Asansol and Darjeeling— in both the areas, there are a sizeable number of non-traditional Bengali voters, and political pundits believe that it had helped BJP to win the two seats.

“Mamata has been mulling over her initiative to form a grand alliance with the Opposition parties. Let me tell her, she should be careful as she is steadily losing her own ground in Bengal. BJP is already the number-two party here… and after winning more than 22 seats in the 2019 elections, we will emerge as the number-one party,” Amit Shah claimed.

Urging people to vote for his party, Shah declared the 2019 elections would be deciding the future of Bengal and added that only BJP could help Bengal in development.

Such tall claims being made by the BJP president may be because of the party’s voting percentage in last four year, which has in both assembly and panchayat polls. But this improvement has not been significant enough for BJP to win seats in Lok Sabha polls, which needs very large number of votes from entire parliamentary constituency, comprised at least four assembly segments.

Political analyst Bijan Sarkar feels that such statement is an attempt to hide the evitable loss that 2019 election will bring. “The number 22 is so vague. He has not been able to give us any direct explanation. Is it 2+2 or 2-2?” questions Sarkar. “The narrative built about achhe din has turned out like a fake dream. All promises made by this government have proved to be false. Political landscape has changed over the last four years. People had hoped that this government would bring a change that India desperately needed but NDA has proved to be otherwise. Lynching, sexual violence on women and children, violence against dalits and minorities, deaths of farmers are the order of the day,” said Sarkar.

Debasish Jana, mayor in council of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation said that BJP is ‘day dreaming’. “They should think about retaining their two seats (Darjeeling and Asansol) now,” said Jana.

Leaders of CPI (M), however, felt that Amit Shah’s Purulia speech was to encourage the BJP cadres. “He knows that it will be a tough fight in Bengal, because we would also be fielding our candidates in every Lok Sabha seats,” said the Left leader, on condition of anonymity.

Purulia, located at the West Bengal-Jharkhand border, has emerged as the latest flashpoint of the rivalry between Mamata Banerjee’s TMC and BJP, and from here Shah started party’s Lok Sabha campaign.

Interestingly, a day after BJP president meeting with a family in Purulia, they joined TMC. While the family members claimed that there were threatened by BJP to meet Amit Shah. But after they joined TMC, BJP leaders claimed, that the family members were abducted by TMC and forcibly made them join TMC.

“Alarming levels of food insecurity in Jharkhand causing hunger deaths,” economist, Jean Dreze

Ranchi: At least 12 people have died from starvation in Jharkhand, but instead of taking action against functionaries whose lapses have led to these deaths and measures to improve the situation of food security in the state, Jharkhand government has been denying hunger as the cause of any of these deaths, claimed Right To Food activists at a press brief at Ranchi.

The RTF activists also claimed that the state government’s denial comes as a measure to absolve itself of any blame. State Food Minister, Saryu Roy, on the other hand has been making fallacious claims and accusations against activists highlighting the violations of right to food in Jharkhand.

The recent deaths of Savitri Devi in Giridh, Meena Musahar in Chatra and Chintaman Malhar in Ramgarh have again raised the issue Jharkhand government’s apathy towards alleged hunger deaths taking place since 10 months in the state.

Activists mentioned that even after a spate of deaths before these three victims, the government took negligible cognizance of the alarming situation.

A fact finding team was sent to each district, who met the families and presented the report.

Savitri Devi, a 60-year old widow, died on 2 June 2018 after prolonged hunger and inadequate nutrition. Her family members do not remember the last time they cooked dal. Their household does not have a ration card, despite having applied for one at the Gram Panchayat a few months ago. “This contradicts the government’s claim that Savitri Devi’s family did not apply for a ration card. Also, contrary to the claims made by the government, Savitri Devi was never admitted in RIMS Ranchi for treatment. Her widow pension was sanctioned in 2014 and surprisingly, the first pension instalment was credited only in April 2018 after her Aadhaar was linked with the scheme. She wasn’t even informed about the same,” Asharfi Nand Prasad, member of RTF, Jharkhand Chapter.

Similarly, 55-year old Chitaman of Mandu, Ramgarh lived a life of extreme deprivation and died a hungry man. He too did not have a ration card. “Here, instead of admitting the alarming situation of the family and its neighbours, government officials tricked Chintaman’s son into signing a statements that told a different tale. Not surprisingly, the Food Minister later claimed that the son himself admitted that his father died a natural death. His insensitivity towards the issue was also reflected when he suggested that the victim’s body be exhumed for post-mortem. He interpreted the son’s refusal for this as a proof that the victim did not die of starvation,” he added.

“The starvation deaths have exposed the exclusion of poor households from the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the alarming levels of food insecurity in the state, pointed out economist, Jean Dreze who also addressed the media on the occasion.

He mentioned further, “A highly effective measure of addressing these problems is the universalisation of the PDS in rural areas and inclusion of nutritious items in the PDS. The deaths have also raised questions on the coverage of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) as most of these families, despite living a life of acute poverty, did not have AAY ration cards. Instead of initiating discussions on such moves, the Food Minister has proposed setting up of grain banks. Even if such banks are established, they will fail to ensure universal access to food security as a matter of right.”

The government’s indifference towards people’s food insecurity is also revealed by its foot-dragging in the withdrawal of the “Direct Benefit Transfer for food security” pilot in Nagri block of Ranchi. “However, the Food Department is yet to roll back this pilot or compensate ration cardholders who are denied their legal entitlement to subsidised foodgrain in this ill-conceived initiative. In fact, it has even failed to make public the findings of the government’s own social audit of this pilot,” added Prasad.

The Right to Food Campaign demanded immediate withdrawal of the “Direct Benefit Transfer for food security” pilot.  It also demanded the universalisation of the PDS in rural areas and inclusion of pulses and edible oil in the PDS – a promise made by the Food Minister himself, claimed the activists.

“The government should also immediately remove the mandatory requirement of Aadhaar from PDS – and all other public services – and strengthen the grievance redress system to be established under the National Food Security Act,” added Dreze.

The ‘cyber underbelly’ of India, Jharkhand, is turning BPL people into millionaire

Jamtara/Giridih: He looks no different from an average villager residing in a Jharkhand village. A fleeting glance, gives one the impression of him being a private cab driver. Thanks to the traditional scarf or gamcha that he sports like many drivers in Jharkhand. Nothing seems to be suspicious about him. Meet Pawan Mandal, a man in his late 20s, who has been duping several across India and doing cyber crime to boost his personal bank account. Making things more interesting is the fact that Mandal is a BPL card holder.

Pawan is latest among the thousands of youth, illiterate or educated, diploma or degree holders, who are involved in committing cyber crimes or frauds being conducted from Jharkhand and whose victims are from across India.

The millionare who owns a BPL card

Perhaps his not-so-affluent look made Inspector Sanjiv Kumar Mishra to think twice before taking any action against him, despite having got a tip off.

“When we met him for the first time, there was absolutely no reason for us to not believe him. He seemed to be a simple villager leading a life of acute poverty. On confrontation he denied all the charges levied on him. However, when we began digging deeper into the case, we realized that he was the owner of a car, which he later claimed to have purchased on a loan,” revealed Mishra.

After first meet, it was clear that Pawan was not working anywhere. But it was just one of the many surprises was in store for the Jharkhand Police.

“Using his Aadhar card details, we contacted banks across Giridih. And to our surprise, Pawan along with his mother, father and wife had over Rs 3000000 in their account. The final figure is yet to be confirmed. Two of his gang members, Chetlal and Pritam Mandal also had over Rs 2000000 deposited in their accounts,” said Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Manish Toppo to eNewsroom.

Given the gravity of the case, his case has been referred to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for further investigations.

Jharkhand becomes the hub of cyber fraudsters

Those living in the area adjoining Karmatand and Narayanpur of Jamtara district, vouch for the fact that these areas have always been infested with thugs. However, with the youths getting tech savvy, the style of stealing money has changed. There are many who would add Bengabad, Gandey and Taratand to this list of places in Jharkhand from where cyber fraudulent operate.

Officers investigating the cyber crime cases where people have been duped off their money have observed that most of those resorting to such crimes are illiterates, just like Mandal.

Some teenagers who are involved in the crime also claimed that after seeing news reports they get inspired to earn easy money.

In the past two years, many claim that Jamtara, Giridih and Deoghar districts of Jharkhand have become infamous for being the focal point of cyber frauds being committed across India. Police from every Indian state has visited these districts to get leads for fraudulent callers, who on the pretext of being a bank official fleeced the account holders of their money. Interestingly, these crimes can be committed single-handedly or by a group of people. What’s more surprising is the fact that masterminds or experts in cyber crimes, offer training or workshops, where those wanting to learn the art of committing a cyber crime are trained. These workshops can last for a few hours to a few days, depending on what role one chooses in the team.

cyber crime criminals jamtara giridih jharkhand
The car, owned by Pawan Mandal at the police station

An investigating official elaborated the modus operandi of cyber frauds. “It is all about confidence. The caller is needed to make random calls to bank account holders, where they confidently tell the account holder that their account would be suspended, if they don’t share the details. On getting the OPTs they siphon off the money to e-wallets connected with some account that they create with banks using fake KYC details. They use Wallet of different banks to purchase items. They also keep other people’s bank accounts which may be or may not be in the knowledge of the person, which are used by these cyber criminals to transfer the money,” said a police officer.

Women Calling

SDPO claimed, “Now, women and girls are also being used to trap innocent victims. And they are working as good as a professional cyber criminal. However we are yet to arrest any lady. We need more details before we nab them.”

He then added, “During my 18-month-tenure in Giridih, we have arrested 300 plus cyber criminals.” However, the union home secretary, Rajiv Gauba, has recently admitted that the NCRB data is yet to fully capture the actual contribution of Jamtara towards total number of cyber crimes committed in India. He has event maintained that in recent time, Jamtara has emerged as the cyber crime capital of India.

While doing story on Pawan and other cyber fraudsters, Giridih police arrested few more whose primary investigation of bank details revealed that they had 12 to 20 lakhs in their accounts.

Giridih police revealed its modus operandi to tackle cyber crimes.

“While in other areas, police work after getting a complaint or when police from other state or district approach them, we, however, make arrests on tip offs and suspicion that in c ertain area, from so and so areas cyber criminals are operating ,” added Toppo.

A district with cyber crime police station

Plagued with the number of complaints coming in, last year a cyber crime police station had been set up in Jamtara to combat cyber crime. This, many claim, is an attempt to help Jharkhand shed its tag of being the capital for cybercrime. Despite them being successful in their early attempts to contain cyber criminals of Jamtara, many feel the need of many such police stations.

Inspector Mishra mentioned, “There is urgent need of cyber experts in such districts now as most of policemen work in traditional way and cyber crime needs tech savvy person to face the new technological challenges in every cyber crime case.”

Flawed education system, the cause of hatred in India, says Bollywood actor Adil Hussain

Kolkata: Meeting someone as sensitive and versatile as Adil Hussain, who wears his heart on his sleeves is a different experience altogether. With no pomp, no air about himself, the actor settles down for a tete-a-tete on a hot humid day at the Lalit Great Eastern Hotel, overlooking a large French window from where one can get to witness a slice of Calcutta, the city that he loves dearly.

Bong Connection

Alumni of NSD and Drama Studio London, his connection with Bengal dates back is really old and strong. “I grew up in Goalpara the district that shares its borders with Bengal. There is a kind of mixed culture. Most of my friends were Bengali living in Assam. So, I have a sense of comfort here. I speak the language. I am so fond of Bengali food. I have grown up reading Bengali literature. My father used to say that Rabindranath Tagore is Gurudev in the truest sense. I instantly feel at home here,” said Adil who wore a soft blue full sleeve shirt for our meet.

However, the actor felt that there is too much noise on the sets in Kolkata. “This is something that I would lovingly point out. It’s criticism with love and nothing else. Things that can be said softly are being said otherwise- ek e kotha na chaecheye to bola jai (you can say the same thing without screaming) but that is our culture, that’s the habit. I wish that part is taken care of. Also, there is no concept of silence during rehearsals,” he said with a smile. He maintained that actors being vulnerable need a certain amount of silence to prepare for an act. “Fake acting is different but when other actors are preparing sincerely for an emotional scene, then the set must have certain amount of silence,” he said. He then added, “Barring this issue, there is no lack of creativity in the Bengali film industry. With talented film makers, the industry has a deep understanding of beauty, cinema. While its narrative style, remains amazing,” said the versatile actor who acted in a number of Bengali, Assamese, Hindi and English movies and even Khasi.

“So with all my love for Bengali film industry and admiration for all the Bengali films, my favourites remain Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Satyajit Ray and Tapan Sinha,” said Adil. His admiration for Bengali songs, literature and films is immense. He even recited Kazi Nazrul Islam’s Bidrohi one of the most revolutionary poems of the legendary poet, which inspires one not to conform to societal rules that chains and imprisons men to a set of structures by not giving him the liberty to expand his horizon and express in a new way.

Bengali Movies

Adil acted in several Bengali flicks like, Obyakto (The Unexpressed) and then a short film Meel (similar) directed by a young director Abhiroop Basu.  He will soon be seen in Pratim D Gupta’s upcoming movie Aahare Mon and Soibal Banerjee’s Maati.

Adil talks at length about his character Jamil in Maati which is pretty close to his heart. “The script of this film is really gripping. I think Leena ji, (Leena Gangopadhyay) must have experienced something similar, which she has expressed in her screenplay. The film is not just realistic but also poetic. Leena ji has managed to capture it all in her script, which will click with the mass audience. I had great fun working with director Soibal Banerjee,” said Adil. Bengali actor Paoli Dam will be seen sharing the screen space with him.

Jamil, who returns to his roots after his stay in America, Adil said, “I can identify with the film and the characters. I have lived in Europe for around three and half years teaching and performing. When I was offered an artistic director post in a theatre company in Holland, my dream job, I took a week to decide. I was questioning myself why I am hesitating. I thought about it for a week and a scene came to my mind of Delhi. During my initial stay in the capital city, when I went hire a taxi from a taxi stand, the Sikh taxi drivers, who being very warm hearted would say ‘baitho pehle khana kao’ or they will offer you tea if they are having it. So despite being a rough city, Delhi has its own flavour, its own warmth that I was missing in Holland. It is not that people are not warm or friendly but the degree of warmth that I was used to, was missing there. I realised that India is my place and I should return and work here. I understand the culture, the people and the other nuances,” said Adil.

He maintains that the character Jamil too shares similar feelings. He is a doctor, married there in America. Without revealing much about the plot, he said, “We have that dog instinct, territorial in nature. It comes from fear and insecurity. So without understanding we hate each other. Sri Aurobindo calls it lower instinct. So Maati is a story of two countries, two religious communities and two people, played by me and Paoli,” Adil informed.

Hatescape

When asked about the recent ethnic clashes that Assam is witnessing, he said, “I am very much disturbed.” The greatest flaw that he thinks, India has done is to give away with the Indian education system.

“Sadly enough, we have not learnt to love other humans, who look different, or speak a different language, or follow a different faith. It is the greatest flaw of our education system. We simply, do not teach our children to love. I remember one particular song of Bhupen Hazaika in this regard manush manush r jonno.”

He then added, “Our education system is designed to create individuals, interested to grab a job of their choice. It fails to create wisdom or teach to nurture human relations. So anybody who looks different in any possible way, be it linguistically, ethnically or gender wise or in terms of religion is seen with hatred. I feel gender discrimination is the greatest apartheid on earth. The entire volatile system that we are in is the result of flawed education system,” said Adil who strongly believes in inclusive system of education that India had long time back before colonial rule.

BJP MLAs face off with Lady Singham: IAS Vijaya Jadhav removed from the post of CEO

0

Ranchi:  Vijaya Jadhav, a 2015 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, who is currently posted in Giridih as the Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) and is on additional charge of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Giridih Municipal Corporation (GMC) has been removed from her second post, after she raided an illegal bar where Giridih MLA Nirbhay Shahabadi, Mayor Sunil Paswan, Deputy Mayor Prakash Seth along with ward councilors were having a ‘meeting.’

The letter issued by the Department of Personal, has named Ganesh Kumar, as the Urban Commissioner of GMC on June 11, 2018, who will be taking care of Jadhav’s responsibilities at GMC.

On Thursday night, June the 7th, Jadhav had raided at a restaurant—Zayeka for serving liquor, illegally. During the raid, Giridih MLA, Mayor, Deputy Mayor along with seventeen ward councilors were present at the restaurant.

Out of the six assembly segments of Giridih district, four have MLAs from ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). Also, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, who are at the helm of the GMC, are from BJP too, won during the recently conducted Municipal Polls.

The Mayor later claimed that they were not having a booze party but a ‘baithak.’

Post raid, two other MLAs of BJP—Kedar Hazra and Jai Prakash Verma, along with Shahabadi, Mayor and Deputy Mayor organised a press conference. The Mayor had alleged that the raid by CEO was done with the intention of assassinating his character, while Hazra termed it as the officer’s anarchy. They had mentioned about raising the issue with the Chief Minister (Raghubar Das) during the press meet.

On the other hand, the CEO had claimed that she had no idea about those present inside the illegal bar. She also maintained she wasn’t doing moral policing to check who drink liquor or who did not. “If an illegal bar runs, it gives Rs 7500 revenue loss to government everyday and I was getting regular information that Zayeka restaurant was serving liquor to its customer illegally. The area is also sensitive as working women cross the road late at the evening, where the restaurant is located, so I raided soon after getting the information on Thursday night. It is just that the Mayor and others were present at a wrong place, at the wrong time, and there is nothing else,” Jadhav had told eNewsroom.

As the news spread about the PC by BJP MLAs and their intention to remove Jadhav from GMC, several leaders from other political parties along with general public had lent their support for the officer, who had earned the reputation of Lady Singham because of her good work, since she joined Giridih as its SDM and GMC as its in-charge CEO.

The GMC, which was earlier a municipality, has collected revenue of over 10 crores in just five months of Jadhav’s tenure as its CEO.

But, it seems like the Jharkhand government has chose to bow down before the ‘ego’ of BJP MLAs by removing Jadhav from her post. The news of Ganesh Kumar being appointed as the Urban Commissioner, Giridih began doing the rounds on social media, since evening and people were seen expressing their anger against it.

Some have even called for a mass protest on Tuesday to express their anger.

BJP MLAs face off with Lady Singham, public supports IAS officer

0

Ranchi: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), which boasts of good governance is openly opposing an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, nicknamed as Lady Singham by the people of Giridih for having raided a restaurant that was illegally serving liquor to its customers.

Vijaya Jadhav, a 2015 batch IAS officer, posted as Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Giridih, also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)-in-charge of Giridih Municipal Corporation (GMC) had raided a restaurant, Zayeka, on Thursday night and seized all the liquors and the restaurant.

BJP plays the character assassination card

Those present at the alleged meeting included local political stalwarts like BJP MLA Nirbhay Shahabadi, Mayor Sunil Paswan, Deputy Mayor Prakash Seth and seventeen ward councilors. As the information of the raid by Jadhav spread out, most ward councilors flew from there. Only Mayor faced Jhadav, and maintained that an important meeting was in progress when the lady IAS officer had conducted the raid.

However, Jadhav was not convinced with the excuse and stated, “Why were they meeting in a restaurant in night when there are air-conditioned rooms in GMC?”

Watch the raid on illegal bar and Giridih Mayor's face off with IAS Vijaya Jadhav

Not happy with the raid, BJP’s Jamua MLA Kedar Hazra, Gandey’s Jai Prakash Verma, Shahbadi along with the Mayor and deputy mayor, called a press conference, where Mayor Paswan attacked the officer by alleging, “This is an attempt to assassinate my character. We were doing Baithak issue concerning the Municipal Corporation itself. But because I had raised some toll tax related issue with the CEO recently, so the raid was conducted. We shall report against Jadhav to the Chief Minister,” said Paswan.

While Kedar Hazra, MLA from Jamua assembly segment, said, “She (Vijaya Jadhav) is trying to create anarchy, which we will not allow to happen.”

Jadhav, since taking charge of Giridih, in October, 2017, has conducted several raids to stall illegal activities being practiced in the city. Right from curbing the sale of adulterated spices to stocking firecracker illegally to tackling the sand mafia to conducting raids on alleged cow slaughter houses. The frequent raids and her zero tolerance for corruption made her earn the name – Lady Singham.

Jadhav, the public hero

“She has been able to rein control on the plastic menace. Now 80 percent of Giridih market is plastic free,” claimed a GMC official, on the condition of anonymity.

The common man is now a fan of hers. “She has conducted some of the biggest raids in the history of Giridih. Her swift action has definitely helped in curbing the crimes committed in Giridih,” stated Somnath, a lecturer and social activist.

Giridih Municipal Corporation, which came into formal existence, earlier this year, has witnessed a record tax collection of over 10 crore rupees during Jadhav’s five month tenure as its CEO.

Opposition reacts

Reacting to the news of BJP leader’s presence at an illegal bar, Congress has demanded MLA Shahabadi, Mayor Paswan and Deputy Mayor Seth to resign from their posts for allegedly boozing in an illegal bar.

“The people of Giridih have not voted them to enjoy at our expense. Here people are not getting drinking water and they are organizing high profile parties in illegal bars,” said Sarfaraz Ahmed, former Giridih MP and minister.

Jharkhand Mukhti Morcha (JMM) too has demanded their resignation. While, CPI-ML leader Rajesh Sinha has asked people to hit the street to protest against BJP’s demand to transfer Jadhav.

“What ruling BJP leaders couldn’t do, she has done. She is so connected with the masses. If she is transferred, we will take on to the streets and protest against the decision,” warned Promila Mehra, a JMM leader, who also sat on dharna to ban liquor in Jharkhand on Saturday.

From the horse’s mouth

However, when Jhadav was contacted to comment on the allegations being made, she told eNewsroom, “We simply raided an illegal bar, about which the locals had been making complains since long. I was informed on Thursday that a high profile party was on. The restaurant is also on sensitive area as working woman crosses there in late evening. I was also clueless as who were attending the party.”

She then added, “During the raid, we simply confiscated the liquor being served. I didn’t even check if those partying were drunk, as my I was not doing moral policing. A bar license gives Rs 7500 revenue each day to government, so I had to curb illegal bars. It is just that Mayor and others found at the wrong place, and at wrong time.”

Jharkhand’s Kathua moment: Both BJP and JMM leaders extend support to the killer’s family after court verdict in two lynching cases

Ranchi: If the world was shocked when some political leaders associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with some Congress supporters extended their support to the Kathua rape accused by organizing a rally, then there is another shocker for all. But this time from Jharkhand, where leaders of BJP and JMM are organizing dharnas, bandh and even offering financial support to the families of the killers in lynching cases.

Last year, in the month of April, Samsuddin Ansari, was lynched to death in Narra village of Bokaro district on mere suspicion. The mob that lynched Ansari to death claiming that he was a child lifter. After lynching him, the mob had also set ablaze a PCR van.

Almost a year later, a Bokaro session court has sentenced the 21 accused. Most of them for life imprisonment and some for seven years.

“Ever since the court delivered its verdict, Member of Parliament (MP) from Giridih, Ravindra Pandey and Dumri’s MLA Jagarnath Mahto have visited the families of the accused and have extended their support. Pandey has assured the family of providing every possible support, while Mahto provided food grains to the family and has assured of continuing to do on a monthly basis till the court delivers justice in favour of them,” said Iftekhar Mahmood, member of Jharkhand State Bureau, Communist Party of India (CPI).

The Left party has prepared a two-paged leaflet with newspaper cuttings of the news reports about them visiting and extending support to the families of those accused of lynching Ansari to death.

The news report, has quoted Mahto even stating that they would be approaching the high court on behalf of the accused and will also be bearing cost for the legal procedure.

Mahmood, who is also the national general secretary of Tanjim-e-Insaaf pointed out, “BJP leaders supporting culprits, is no longer surprising, given the fact that they did the same when the Kathua case stirred the nation’s conscience. But the fact that JMM leader Jagarnath Mahto doing the same is a matter of great concern for us,” he told eNewsroom.

In the just conclude bypolls held at Gomia and Silli in Jharkhand, both the JMM candidates had got support from several parties including CPI and the party retained both the assembly seats.

On being asked if he had had a word with senior JMM leaders Mahmood said, “We understand that it is being done by Mahto in his personal capacity, and that party leaders are not hands in glove in this matter. We are yet to contact anyone and believe that the party should be aware of Dumri’s MLA’s shocking activities.”

However, extending support to those accused of lynching Ansari, is not the first in Jharkhand. Almost around the same time, when BJP leaders were rallying behind the accused of the minor girl child who had been brutally gang-raped and murdered in Kathua, dharnas and bandhs had been staged in Ramgarh, to show support for the killers of Alimuddin Ansari. Alimuddin was lynched to death on suspicion of ferrying beef in his van. In this case, the Ramgarh Court gave a landmark verdict by sentencing eleven accused, including a BJP leader, to life time imprisonment.

But soon after the verdict, Ramgarh’s former BJP MLA Shankar Choudhary organised a 15 day dharna and observed a day long bandh in Ramgarh demanding CBI inquiry into the case. Later, Hazaribagh’s MP Jayant Sinha, also wrote a letter to Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das requesting for a CBI inquiry. Sinha had also announced that legal aid would be provided to those convicted in this case.

Both Giridih MP and Dumri MLA could not be contacted for a comment on the issue.
