Ranchi: Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, who appeared before Enforcement Directorate officials today in Ranchi, resigned and a senior Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Champai Soren got elected as the leader of gathbandhan legislators. Champai Soren is set to become the next chief minister of the state.

Earlier today, Hemant Soren answered questions related to the alleged land scam. He spend more than six hours with ED. Hemant Soren, who is in the custody of ED, later gets arrested by the agency.

Hemant Soren resigns

After the resignation, gathbandhan leaders reached Raj Bhavan with the support letters of forty seven MLAs, but Governor CP Radhakrishnan has yet to meet them.

Sources also said that in the new cabinet, Alamgir Alam, a senior Congress leader may be made the deputy chief minister. If it happens, Alam will be the first minority leader to become deputy CM in Jharkhand.

Significantly, some gathbandhan MLAs are also getting offers to switch sides. “Since they know, I can not be lured, so they did not contact me, but it is not the same with other legislators,” claimed an MLA.

Who is Champi Soren?

68-year-old Champai Soren was born in Saraikela district of Jharkhand. Son of a farmer, Champai joined JMM 34 years back, in 1980. His political career began in 2005 when he won from Saraikela assembly constituency. He was transport minister in Hemant Soren’s cabinet. Champai is considered a loyal leader of the JMM.

FIR against ED officials

Amid all these, today Hemant Soren also lodged an FIR against ED officials under Schedule Caste and Scheduled Tribe atrocities act at SC/ST Police Station, Ranchi.

In the complaint, Soren claimed that the car and cash allegedly seized by ED officers including Kapil Raj, Deovrat Jha, Anupam Kumar and Aman Patel did not belong to him. But the agency officials told news persons that they seized Hemant Soren’s car and cash.

“My family members and I have suffered and experienced immense mental, psychological and emotional harm because of the acts committed by the above officers,” reads the complaint.

A case (06/24) in this regard has been registered under SC/ST act against the officials.
