Ranchi: Champai Soren got a Midnight call from Raj Bhavan, Jharkhand to form a government in the state.

On Wednesday, when it became clear that Enforcement Directorate officials would arrest Hemant Soren after six hours of questions-answer round, Hemant Soren resigned and soon after Champai Soren with the signature of 43 legislators reached Raj Bhavan to claim to form government.

However, Governor CP Radhakrishnan did not meet the MLAs and they had to return empty-handed.

On Thursday, the governor called the Champai Soren team at 5.30 pm to meet. The gathbandhan legislators, before going to Raj Bhavan, released a video of 43 MLAs.

In the 80-seat Jharkhand assembly, 41 is the majority mark to form a government. Champai Soren’s letter to the governor mentioned the support of 47 MLAs and the physical presence of 43 legislators.

But, the governor had not invited the gathbandhan MLAs to form the government. Later, fearing poaching, several legislators were sent to Hyderabad by the flight.

However, from social media users to constitutional experts criticizing Governor Radhakrishnan for not calling gathbandhan MLAs to form a government even after 24 hours of Hemant Soren’s resignation and the state being function without a government, made him to do so, believe many.

Champai Soren as chief ministerial candidate

The suggestion to choose Saraikela MLA as the leader of legislators by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has silenced the critiques of Soren family as well as oppsition leaders. Since it was obvious that Hemant Soren would have to resign, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were themselves suggesting the name of Kalpana Soren to be sworn in as the chief minister.

But as Champai becoming the leader of the gathbandhan legislators, it silenced the BJP, who cry dynasty politics by Soren family. The move also strengthened JMM’s unity.

“There are enough legislators in the team of Champai Soren, required to form a government in Jharkhand. MLAs like Lobin Hembrom, who was earlier not happy with the name of Kalpana Soren being suggested for the CM position, have now joined the Gathbandhan team,” Vinod Singh, the CPIML legislator, who has also extended support to Champai Soren government told eNewsroom.
