Giridih: We often complain about Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) not doing their job after election result declarations. But the winds of change can be felt in the Giridih Assembly constituency.

The newly elected Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA, Sudivya Kumar Sonu, has jumped into action within a few days of getting elected. Sonu is yet to take his oath, as Jharkhand’s Vidhan Sabha session will commence on January 6.

In the past 10 days, the legislator has visited Giridih Sadar Hospital to check for negligence in treatment, met with Electricity Department officials, and inspected an under-construction road.

“Following the instructions of Vidhayak Ji, I spoke to the hospital surgeon to learn about the lack of facilities and infrastructure in the hospital. He informed me about the lack of medicine allotment and the absence of the rabies vaccine in Giridih Sadar Hospital. Giridih district also lacks good doctors, and I will be discussing this with the government,” said Sanjay Singh, JMM’s district president.

“Our policy will remain like this: we will first provide facilities and then seek an explanation from the department about why they are not functioning well or why the common man is not being served adequately.”

Singh further said, “The hospital was dirty, so we have told the municipality officials to clean it and have given instructions for the maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene, a major issue with government hospitals.”

He also stated that, besides Sadar Hospital, Mother Hospital would also be provided with adequate manpower, doctors, and infrastructure to convert them into well-maintained and functional health centers.

On the issue of erratic power supply, Sanjay said, “Power cuts are a big issue in Giridih. We will ensure ‘zero power cuts’ in the near future. At present, Giridih rural areas need 45 megawatts of electricity but only get 20 megawatts. The grid is ready and will be receiving electricity from March, but Giridih is under the command area of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), so we will also keep DVC involved.”

He also mentioned that, at present, the electricity board repairs one transformer per day, and they have requested the department to double this number.

Moving on to the water supply issues that plague the Giridih district every summer, Sanjay suggested deepening the Khandoli Dam reservoir by two meters so that it can store more water for the summer season.

“We are also working to finalize the bypass road. The construction has been on hold for a long time, but it will start soon.”

The local JMM committee is also in the process of forming small groups that will be assigned the task of following up on grievances in different departments. However, this team will only become functional after Sonu takes his oath.

“All these things have happened in a short time because JMM has a functional local unit and grassroots cadres. Sonu, over the past three decades, has a deep connection with every cadre of JMM,” claimed Pankaj Taha, another senior JMM leader.

The Giridih JMM MLA meets his visitors at the party office itself. A time slot has been fixed for his daily office visitors.

Sonu, while talking to eNewsroom, explained his initiative: “From my MLA fund, we will purchase at least ten tractor trolleys so that when a transformer goes out of order, a trolley with a working transformer can be installed there to continue the supply until the defunct one is repaired.”

“We are here to change the work culture, and officials must improve to better serve the common man,” he added.
While Chief Minister Hemant Soren, after assuming office, made it clear that the JMM-led gathbandhan government will be pro-people and will take decisions in the interest of the people of Jharkhand,
the last word came from the JMM district president: “If people have voted for change, they will see the change in everything, soon.”
